You have to love the 2015 Astros!

Back in 2013, I watched a Rangers-Astros game at the ballpark.   It was between the veteran Rangers and a bunch of Astros that few people knew.

During the game, I started a conversation with an Astros' fan who told me that their farm system was loaded and coming to the majors soon!

My friend was right.   They are here and lots more are coming.   The fans in Houston will be watching some great baseball for years to come.

I'm rooting for Texas but Houston is my second favorite choice.   You have to love what that organization has done for the fans of Houston.

Don't be shocked if they beat the Yankees!

By the way, the Astros had 7 of their minor leagues teams in the post season.

Desperately looking for habeas corpus in Venezuela

(My new American Thinker post)

It works like this down in Venezuela. First, you get arrested for political statements. Secondly, they lock you up and promise your wife a hearing. Third, you stay in jail indefinitely, for a long long time without a trial.

Let's look at the story of Mr. Antonio Ledezma, the former mayor of Caracas:
It’s been seven months since Venezuelan authorities arrested Antonio Ledezma on charges of conspiring against President Nicolás Maduro, and the Caracas mayor has still yet to see a judge.
Ledezma’s wife, Mitzy Capriles, announced on Tuesday, September 22, that her husband’s preliminary hearing has been pushed back once again, this time until October 21.   The mayor’s defense attorneys say the government’s case is based on forged evidence and have denounced Ledezma’s inability to defend himself in court against the accusations.  “This is a completely baseless case,” Omar Estacio, Ledezma’s defense attorney, said in an interview with local media.   On Monday, the Mayors Association of Venezuela issued a statement demanding Ledezma’s release from prison. They say the Venezuelan judiciary is violating due process and has ignored the mayor’s presumption of innocence, which are both protected under the Venezuelan Constitution.
We are watching "judicial tyranny", or how the authorities violate the rule of law to terrorize its critics. These arrests are not just terrible for those arrested but also for their poor families strung along with promises of a hearing that never materializes.

On another front, Leopoldo Lopez, another opposition leader, was arrested in 2014 and just recently sentenced.      Lopez was put through the same travesty of indefinite arrest, promises of hearings and finally a sentence that most serious people do not accept.

Shouldn't the U.S. be doing more? Is watching the travesty our only option?

Warming of relations with Cuba has done nothing to help an artist imprisoned for disrespecting the Castros

(My new American Thinker post)

Let me introduce a young Cuban man who goes by the name of El Sexto.  He is a street performer, popular with young Cubans.

As we've discussed, not much has changed in Cuba, and the latest in El Sexto's story is another example:

Not long after his return, El Sexto was arrested in December for attempting a performance featuring two pigs named Fidel and Raúl. He planned to let them roam around Havana’s Central Park, but was detained before he could get there. The reason: disrespect of national figures. Yet Maldonado hasn’t been formally charged in the ensuing nine months of imprisonment.

Typical Castro style: Throw away the key, ask questions later. His mother, Maria Victoria Machado, says his jailers only give her the run-around and set dates for a release that never comes. “He committed no crime,” she says in a video.

To protest, Maldonado, the father of a toddler, has been on a water-only hunger strike since Sept. 8.

At the United Nations on Monday, President Barack Obama once again publicly extolled the virtues of the people-to-people policy he has taken to a whole new level, lifting every restriction on travel and trade with Cuba he can possibly remove without congressional approval.

But in the afterglow of the American olive branch, Cuba has continued to operate with the same repressive stance of the last 56 years.

El Sexto is just the latest evidence that people-to-people contact works only when both sides act in good faith.

At some point, the Obama administration has to hold the Castro regime accountable for this disregard of human rights and the rule of law.  This is all happening in front of our eyes, almost like the "in your face, Obama" speech by Raúl Castro.  In his speech, Castro called for Puerto Rican independence and condemned NATO encroachment on Russia.   As someone said, with friends like that, who needs enemies?

Furthermore, where is Hollywood? the artist community?  Where are these groups when one of their own gets thrown in jail for expressing a political point of view?  Where is the American left when an artist gets thrown in jail for disrespect of national figures?

El Sexto's ordeal is the perfect opportunity for President Obama to demand something from the Castro regime.  He can start by saying that civilized countries do not lock up people for mocking their leaders.  Furthermore, President Obama should hold Raúl Castro personally responsible for El Sexto's health.

Why does Obama Exploit Tragedy?

(My new American Thinker post)

It's been an awful 72 hours for President Obama.

First, there is that fellow Putin's new role in the Middle East. Putin is filling the vacuum that we created. The old KGB gangster is giving the community organizer some rather uncomfortable lessons about the consequences of projecting weakness.

Second, today's new lackluster jobs report. The summer of 2015 will be remembered as a payroll disaster: Only 142K jobs added In September With zero wage growth! We are in year 7 of the Obama presidency and no one can say that it will be remembered for creating jobs.

Of course, there is the shooting in Oregon, another one of those mind-crushing moments about something evil happening in our culture.

President Obama chose to address the shooting and I have issues with what he said:

1) Why does President Obama have to talk about this so quickly? Does he really think that we are waiting for his words out here? There are times for presidents to speak, such as Syria and a lousy jobs report. The shooting in Oregon is better left to local authorities and the families who live there. We can all express our love our support but they need to be left alone and without a president trying to score political points.

2) President Obama said that we are the one advanced nation without adequate gun laws. I don't know if that's true. I do know that President Obama had huge Senate Democrat majorities and never passed a single gun law. He had 60, 59 and then 54 Senators of his own party and couldn't get a single safety gun law, as he called them. Maybe President Obama should assume some responsibility for that. Maybe he should say that his party failed to address the issue because they were busy pushing ObamaCare at any cost. Maybe he should have brought to gun control the same urgency that he brought to expanding the EPA or executive orders about illegal immigration.

3) What safety gun laws would have prevented this awful crime anyway? The shooting took place in a gun-free zone where thousands of law abiding citizens respected the law and did not bring their guns to school. Unfortunately, one person did not respect the law and shot a bunch of students made victims by "gun free zones" that seem to protect killers rather than law-abiding citizens.

It may come as a shock to President Obama but many of us really don't care how he exploits these tragedies.

Our newest beneficiary shows little respect or love for the U.S.

(My new American Thinker post)

Once upon a time, you could expect a country to show you a little love, specially if you just literally rescued them from drowning.

Don't expect that from Raul Castro and Cuba. In fact, the language of the past is the language of the present, as reported by IBD:

After Obama showered Cuba with goodies, Raul Castro has repaid him with insults, demands and grievances broadcast through the UN. Seems the Castro brothers know a fool when they see one.

This is how best to summarize Raul Castro at the UN:  We like U.S. money but just don't like its foreign policy very much, specially when human rights are mentioned.

Last, but not least, repression in Cuba has grown since President Obama announced the new Cuba policy:

Host Chuck Todd asked, “Ever since the United States cut this deal and opened up diplomatic relations with Cuba, tell me what’s happened to political prisoners in Cuba.”

Diaz-Balart replied, “Well, the increase of repression has been clear. A young man, El Sexto, who is an artist, currently in a prison in Cuba, no charges against him. He’s on a hunger strike, very close to death, and that is because, in an art exhibit, he brought out an art exhibit that had two apparently paper mache pigs. One said Fidel and one said Raul. And for that art exhibit, he’s close to death. Over the weekend, 70 people were arrested in Cuba. That includes Ladies of White and dissidents. The three dissidents that tried to approach the pope are still unaccounted for in prison. A lot of questions by Raul Castro, but what is going to cause a change in that government that’s been in power since January 1st of 1959?”

Host Chuck Todd added,”It was very important, I thought, we bring up that political prisoner point. These are people that the pope supposedly was blessing all these things. They put on a good show. Then when we all leave, something seems to change.”

That's correct. They put on a good show and then nothing changes.

How does that one about "I ended wars" look now?

(My new American Thinker post)

It's tempting to say that Obama's chickens have come to roost. However, this is more like the vampires have come home to do a lot more than roosting.

Reality always has the last word and the situation in Syria speaks for itself, as we see in news reports:
Russian warplanes began bombarding Syrian opposition targets in the war-torn nation's north Wednesday, following a terse meeting at which a Russian general asked Pentagon officials to clear out of Syrian air space and was rebuffed, Fox News has learned.
A U.S. official said Russian airstrikes targeted fighters in the vicinity of Homs, located roughly 60 miles east of a Russian naval facility in Tartus, and were carried out by a "couple" of Russian bombers. The strikes hit targets in Homs and Hama, but there is no presence of ISIS in those areas, a senior U.S. defense official said. These planes are hitting areas where Free Syrian Army and other anti-Assad groups are located, the official said.
According to a U.S. senior official, Presidents Obama and Putin agreed on a process to "deconflict" military operations. The Russians on Wednesday "bypassed that process," the official said.
"That's not how responsible nations do business," the official said.

Well, it may not be how responsible nations do business. Nevertheless, it is how nations do business when they've concluded that the U.S. is not around anymore.

Where are we now? Where are we 4 years after President Obama decided to leave Iraq to keep a silly campaign promise about ending wars?

This is where we are. Russia has forged alliances with Syria, Iran, and Iraq to apparently share intelligence to destroy ISIS. So far, it looks more and more like an alliance to save Assad and take over the air space in that region.

For years, we heard that the U.S. did too much or was too quick to get involved. We are watching today what happens when we do nothing.
