Keep an Eye on the Hispanic Vote in Texas...

There is something very interesting happening in the Texas race for governor.

AG Abbott, the GOP candidate for governor, has decided to ask Hispanics for their votes, according to a new story in The Washington Post.
As long as anyone can remember, the South Texas counties that make up the Rio Grande Valley have been two things: Hispanic and blue-as-the-big-sky Democrat. In Hidalgo County, along the Rio Grande, the locals say a Republican hasn’t won a countywide office in recent memory. Even though Republican governors have led Texas for two decades, their best showing among Hispanic voters was in 1998 with George W. Bush, who didn’t even win half.
But this year, Republican nominee Greg Abbott, the state’s attorney general, has set out to break Bush’s record by making the rapidly growing Hispanic vote — and the Rio Grande Valley — central to his campaign. The day after Abbott announced his candidacy in San Antonio, he was in McAllen, on the Mexican border. He has visited the area 14 times during the campaign, most recently for his first debate with the Democratic candidate, state Sen. Wendy Davis.
He has also aired six Spanish-language TV ads, including one featuring his Latina mother-in-law that premiered during the Mexico-Brazil World Cup match in June. (“His values are our values. Faith, family and honesty,” his sister-in-law Rosie Phalen says in the ad.)
This is interesting and maybe a great lesson for GOP candidates in Hispanic and perhaps African-American districts.

First, AG Abbott's campaign did not assume that Democrats automatically vote Hispanic.  They may have voted that way in the past, but the Abbott campaign doesn't want to overlook them in an election year full of Hispanic disenchantment with the Obama administration.  The Abbott team has correctly concluded that there are some Hispanics in Texas who may want to send Democrats a message!

Second, all this talk about demographics assumes that Hispanics are not "results-oriented," or that they will vote Democrat no matter how many times the party takes them for granted.  It also assumes that Hispanics care only about immigration and have zero concerns for job creation, education reforms, or abortion.

We will know on election day.  However, I like what AG Abbott is doing.  He did not get the memo that Hispanics will automatically vote Democrat.

He plans to get a lot of their votes this year, and I think that he will!

'Hope and Change': Great for the 1%

It wasn't supposed to be this way, especially for the candidate running preaching "social justice."

According to this Wall Street Journal editorial, the Obama presidency has been just "dandy" for the top 1%.
In the latest grim tiding of the public mood, merely 42% think the American dream that "if you work hard, you'll get ahead" remains true, down from 53% in 2012 and 50% in 2010.
According to the Public Religion Research Institute poll last week, the steepest declines in belief in the last two years were among people under age 30 (down 16 percentage points), women (14 points) and Democrats (17).
In other words, the most disillusioned belong to the coalition that elected President Obama.
But before giving up on upward mobility, they ought to blame the policies he has enacted.
Mr. Obama has been the best President for slow growth and inequality in modern history, as new economic surveys show.

And there is more:
This month the Federal Reserve also published its triennial Survey of Consumer Finances examining the 2010-2013 period. Overall average real family income rose 4%, but median income fell 5%, "consistent with increasing income concentration."
There were essentially no changes for people between the 40th and 90th income percentiles after steep losses from 2007-2010, while median income rose 2% among the top 10% and fell 5.5% among the bottom 40%. All of this is especially notable because it follows the most sustained policy focus on reducing inequality in decades.
These numbers tell me two things:

1) Democrat policies have been a disaster for minorities, especially African-Americans under our first African American president; and more importantly,

2) the GOP must have "a growth message" like the Jack Kemp approach of reviving inner-city areas.  We can't just run against Obama or Democrats.  We need a message that goes to areas, currently under African-American or Hispanic Democrats, and asks for their votes.

Obama's economy has a created a great opportunity for the GOP to present a positive, forward-looking message.

And let's not forget school choice, the key for giving young minorities real "hope and change"!

President Obama Looks Overwhelmed

It's not fair, but it's politics.
From ISIS to Ebola, President Obama reminds you of the fellow trying to get the water out of the boat.  He covers one hole, and water is coming in from another hole.  It must be frustrating, to say the least.

Ebola is the latest of the problems to blow up in President Obama's face, as Byron York reports:
On Sept. 16, President Obama visited the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The agency is the lead organization in the federal government's efforts to prevent the introduction and spread of the Ebola virus into the United States, and Obama used his remarks there to update Americans on those efforts.
The chances of an Ebola outbreak in the United States are "extremely low," Obama said. U.S. are working with officials in Africa "to increase screening at airports so that someone with the virus doesn't get on a plane for the United States." And then this:
In the unlikely event that someone with Ebola does reach our shores, we've taken new measures so that we're prepared here at home. We're working to help flight crews identify people who are sick, and more labs across our country now have the capacity to quickly test for the virus. We're working with hospitals to make sure that they are prepared, and to ensure that our doctors, our nurses and our medical staff are trained, are ready, and are able to deal with a possible case safely.
Obama added that in the unlikely event an Ebola case appeared in the United States, "we have world-class facilities and professionals ready to respond. And we have effective surveillance mechanisms in place.
And then a case of Ebola happens in Dallas.

To be fair, President Obama is just unlucky on this one.

Unlike ISIS, where President Obama was incredibly negligent, Ebola is a bit like Katrina.  In other words, Pres. Bush had nothing to do with Katrina, and especially the incompetence of the local government, but he got the blame for so much.

Finally, there is a sense that President Obama is just plain overwhelmed.  He can't manage events or surround himself with people who can get things done.

And Chris Matthews is right.  President Obama needs to hear some new voices and bring some new blood to his administration.  He really needs to send Valerie Jarrett back to Chicago!

Pres. Cristina Fernandez of Argentina in 'Muy Loca' Mode

As my Argentine friends tell me, their country has a lot of natural resources and a wonderfully literate population, but some very crazy leaders.

Let's add incumbent President Cristina Fernandez to the list.  (She was elected president after her husband, Pres. Kirchner, passed away a couple of years ago.)

Let me give you some context: Argentina is once again an economic mess.

In an effort to distract her population, President Fernandez is now saying that the US is out to get her:
“If something should happen to me, don’t look to the Middle East, look to the North,” Fernández said during the address on Tuesday night, in which she alluded to an alleged plot against her by local bankers and businessmen “with foreign help”.
Fernández had previously claimed to have received death threats from Islamic State (Isis) because of her friendship with Pope Francis. In last night’s speech, however, she seemed to suggest the threats against her, received in three emails to Argentinian security officials, had come from the US.
Her claim comes in the wake of a rapid deterioration of Argentina’s already rocky relationship with the US after the country went into default in August.
Argentina has rejected paying $1.3bn (£990m) awarded by New York Judge Thomas Griesa to “vulture fund” investors who refused to accept a “haircut” on Argentinian bonds from the country’s previous default in 2001.
“I’m not naive, this is not an isolated move by a senile judge in New York,” said Fernández. “Because vultures look a lot like the eagles of empires,” referring to the bald eagle, the national symbol of the US.
Fernández almost threw out the US embassy chief of mission Kevin Sullivan for saying “it is important Argentina get out of default” to a local newspaper. Fernández claims that despite its debt crisis, Argentina is not in real default and Sullivan was called in for a reprimand by the Argentinian foreign ministry for using the “default” word.
With economic stagnation, Argentina’s peso currency in free fall and an alarming rise in crime levels, Fernández has seemed increasingly beleaguered in the last few weeks.
There is also increasing uncertainty within her Victory Front party regarding who Fernández will back as presidential candidate in 2015. Fernández’s second term ends next year, and she is unable to stand for re-election, though her 37-year-old son Máximo Kirchner could be a candidate to replace her.
Let me add that President Fernandez is not the first Latin American leader to see "ghosts" from the north.  At the same time, President Cristina Fernandez has gone a long way from "hope and change" to publicly saying that the U.S. is out to get her.

I just hope that our friends in Argentina do a better job in their next election.

Yes, Obama Knew about ISIS

Yesterday, we said that President Obama was either reckless or incompetent.  He either didn't pay attention at the briefing or kept the country in the dark about ISIS.

Today, I'm leaning toward the irresponsible, or a major dereliction of duty that we have not seen in U.S. history.

According to a U.K. newspaper,  President Obama was told about ISIS back in 2012, or before the presidential campaign:
President Barack Obama's intelligence briefings have provided him with specific information since before he won re-election in 2012 about the growing threat of the terror group now known alternatively as ISIS and ISIL, an administration insider told MailOnline on Monday.
'Unless someone very senior has been shredding the president's daily briefings and telling him that the dog ate them, highly accurate predictions about ISIL have been showing up in the Oval Office since before the 2012 election,' said a national security staffer in the Obama administration who is familiar with the content of intelligence briefings.
The staffer declined to share anything specific about the content of those briefings, citing his need to maintain a security clearance.
But 'it's true,' he said, 'that the [intelligence] community was sending pretty specific intel up to us.'
'We were seeing specific threat assessments and many of them have panned out exactly as we were told they would.'
Yes, this news report is based on a nameless source, but it is credible.  We've heard similar comments from others.

It's clear now that President Obama chose to overlook the ISIS threat for purely political reasons, or the 2012 reelection campaign.

It's time for a serious Democrat to call on President Obama to take responsibility for such an obvious dereliction of duty.  Also, President Obama has failed the men and women who will have to go in and take out ISIS.  Our armed forces will now fight an enemy emboldened by two years of presidential indifference.
