So commencement addresses are now for partisan cheap shots?

Once upon a time, you’d look forward to a commencement speech.  They were supposed to be inspirational and uplifting.  They were designed to congratulate the graduates and encourage them to achieve the best in the real world.
Not long ago, one of my sons graduated from Texas A&M, and Gen. David H. Petraeus delivered a fabulous speech.
Our #2 son graduated from SMU Law School, and President Bush spoke with humor and inspired the graduates to be great.
Well, that was then, and this is now.  This is a commencement address by Secretary Kerry just days ago:
John Kerry used his commencement speech at Northeastern University on Friday to take a thinly veiled swipe at Donald Trump, saying, “Greatness isn’t about bragging, it’s about doing.”
“There are no walls big enough to stop people from anywhere, tens of thousands of miles away, who are determined to take their own lives while they target others,” he said.
The secretary of state noted that this year’s graduating class represented students from nearly 80 different countries— “the most diverse class in Northeastern’s history.”
“In other words, you are Donald Trump’s worst nightmare,” said Kerry.
Are you kidding me?  Donald Trump’s worst nightmare?
Maybe Secretary Kerry should talk to a few young people this week.  He may be shocked to learn that their worst nightmare is finding a job or paying off college debts.
Is this what we have sunk to?  We can’t pass up an opportunity to indoctrinate young people with the party dogma.  That’s what they do in Venezuela and Cuba, not the U.S.
Secretary Kerry, you should be worried about the Iran nuclear deal and ISIS.  That’s what really threatens our young people.

An idea for Mr. Trump

(My new American Thinker post)

Our friend Thomas Lifson is right that we should get over it and support Trump. Let me give Mr. Trump a few ideas to help me get over it and jump on the train:

1) Do a weekly policy address, sort of like the foreign policy speech of a couple days ago. Outline specifics and some of the proposals that a President Trump would present to Congress. He should read Karl Rove's last column:
Mr. Trump must also retool his stump speech.
Voters will tire of The Donald if he doesn’t have a second rhetorical act with far fewer insults and more substance.
Reading more speeches from a teleprompter, particularly on the economy, will help.
The Trumpistas argue that voters don’t need details, but those up for grabs in November do.
These speeches will put meat on the bones of his policy views and yield new material for the stump.
He can start by discussing the last 2-3 economic reports:
The U.S. economy added the fewest number of jobs in seven months in April and Americans dropped out of the labor force in droves, signs of weakness that cast doubts on whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates before the end of the year.
2) We don't the need the name of the VP or the people in the Cabinet this month. Instead, Mr. Trump can tell us what he believes the role of government is.

3) Connect Hillary Clinton with the lousy public schools in minority districts. In other words, these schools are exhibit A of the corrupt relationship between the Democrat Party and the teachers' unions. Talk about bringing back the cities, currently in control of Democrats. My guess is that such a message will connect with a lot of African Americans living in these districts.

There are other ideas, of course.

Mr. Trump has two months to close the deal. He should stop campaigning and start thinking about the president that he wants to be.

Finally, it would help if he'd stop talking about Mexico paying for the fence. It is a silly issue and misses the real benefit of having a fence on the border. The fence will benefit both countries and serious people in Mexico know that.

Again, Mr Trump has been a great opportunity, i.e. two months to mend some of the things that he broke.

Trump goes beyond bizarre with the Cruz‐Oswald story

What do you do when you are hours from effectively clinching the GOP nomination? When all the polls point to a big night for your campaign?
I think that most of us would take Monday night off and have dinner with our wife. Maybe order some pizza and have a fun night with friends. Or tell your staff to shut off the phones because the candidate wants a little rest and work on the victory speech.
Instead, Mr.Trump decided to mention one of the most bizarre stories in electoral history, about a young Rafael Cruz standing with Lee Harvey Oswald.
Polifact raised serious questions about the story:
Trump’s charge appears to be based on a National Enquirerreport alleging that Rafael Cruz is the man standing next to Oswald in a photo from 1963. But technical experts told PolitiFact that no such firm conclusion is possible given the quality of the photograph, and several historians of the period told us they’ve never seen Cruz’s name come up in connection with Oswald.
The whole story is based on a picture of someone who looks like a young Rafael Cruz but no one can confirm that it was him. What kind of journalism is that? What kind of candidate even mentions such an outrageous story?
For the record, many anti-Castro Cubans were seen with Lee Harvey Oswald when he was marching for Castro in the summer of 1963.
Some even got into verbal matches with Oswald over Cuba.
I’ve met a couple of Cubans who argued with Oswald about his support of the Castro regime. You can see bits of these scenes in a Frontline documentary that came out years ago.
So could there be a picture of Cubans around Lee Harvey Oswald in New Orleans? The answer is very likely yes. Does that picture have anything to do with Rafael Cruz supporting Lee Harvey Oswald or the Kennedy assassination? The answer is no!
Let me repeat my serious concerns about the Trump candidacy.
What kind of a man repeats a story like that? The answer is a man who can’t control himself or who doesn’t know that silence is golden.
