We were told last year that Raul Castro would be retiring in early 2018. Just last week, we were told that it would be April. Don’t be shocked if April turns into June and into August and so on.
Over time, dictators rarely walk away and retire. They usually die, like Fidel, or get overthrown like in Romania. They don’t usually get on a helicopter, wave at the new leader and smile at admirers.
Fidel left Raul a big mess. On top of that, the reforms have not reformed a darn thing. Venezuela can not longer subsidize the regime. President Trump has halted the President Trump’s agenda.
And Cuba may be about to witness the struggle between the successor, VP Diaz-Canel, and Alejandro Castro, the manager of the family business.
How do you reconcile the Diaz-Canel vs Alejandro Castro upcoming power struggle? You don’t!
Raul may just be learning that Fidel left him a mess that he can not walk away from!
