Europe is a continent of people who expect to be taken care of from the cradle to the grave.
What's wrong with that? There is no more money to support it.
Today, we hear about anti-austerity marches in Europe. The BBC has a story of thousands marching from the streets of Spain to the boulevards of Greece. These marches are often sponsored by labor unions and political parties still invested in the policies that created the welfare state in the first place.
Unemployment is still too high in Europe. The BBC reports:
"In its latest unemployment report, Eurostat said the unemployment rate in the 27 EU countries reached 10.1% in January, with a total of 24.3 million people out of work."
Of course, the high unemployment and pathetic job creation is directly related to the welfare state & the high taxes that come with it.
Can Europe save itself? Is the political class capable of solving these problems? Time will tell but I'm not optimistic.
