Friday's jobs reports is more bad news for those who are still drinking the Obama Kool Aid

Another Friday and another post about the sad state of the US economy.

On the surface, the rate dropped to 8.1% but it dropped for all of the wrong reasons.

First, 386,000 have dropped out.  In other words, they are not officially looking for work.   They've given up!

Second, the US economy created 96,000 jobs.   How can a US$ 14 trillion economy create only 96,000 jobs?  Perhaps someone in the media will ask Pres BO that question!

Third, labor participation for men is the lowest since 1948.

We hear that Pres BO was aware of these "jobs" numbers last night.  Do you understand now why the speech was so lifeless or why the Dems are doubling down on liberalism?  At this point, the Dem strategy is simple: Get the base out because that's all we got!

From "yes we can" to "we didn't and probably can't"

What a difference four years makes!  He spoke in front of Greek columns and fanatical supporters in Denver '08.  He spoke this time inside rather than outside.  He is now saying that change is hard after telling us that it'd be easy.

Will it work?  I don't think so!  Pres BO was elected by people who voted for a "fantasy".  They voted for someone who'd save the world and move mountains.  Therefore, it is very difficult to tell the voters that the man does not walk on water or that he does not know how to swim.

Back in October 2008, Professor Ajami made an amazing prediction:
"The morning after the election, the disappointment will begin to settle upon the Obama crowd. Defeat -- by now unthinkable to the devotees -- will bring heartbreak. Victory will steadily deliver the sobering verdict that our troubles won't be solved by a leader's magic."

Professor Ajami looks like a prophet today, specially now that we see how the Obama presidency has disappointed the millions who got drunk on "hope and change."

Following the Cowboys rather than watching former Pres Clinton

It's a tough night for a convention when we are doing a radio show and watching the Cowboys play the Giants in the NFL opener.  Let's not forget that the first place Rangers are in Kansas City and carefully marching into another post-season. (Update: Texas beat KC)

So let's talk about those Cowboys.  This is such a tough team to analyze.  Will they go 8-8, 10-6 or 6-10?  Frankly, I don't know because there are huge questions marks all around.  (Update: Cowboys beat NY Giants)

In the past two years, the Dallas Cowboys have proven me wrong.  I predicted success and the Cowboys disappointed us twice.  Maybe they will do better this year since I am not predicting anything big.

Over in Charlotte, the Dems are having their convention and the TV ratings are not making the advertisers happy.  To be fair, the GOP audience was down too but a little bit better.   Maybe we should bring back the "smoke-filled rooms".   They were exciting and suspenseful and these modern conventions are not.  They are just "infomercials" and the Dems do not have a good product to sell this time around.

They will be two very different conventions

Yes, these will be very different conventions.  The GOP convention was all about self-reliance and a return to capitalism.  The Dem convention will show the country just how out of touch with reality the party of Pres BO really is.

It starts with this phony "war on women".  The Dems want women to get "free birth control pills".  The GOP wants women to pay less at the gas pumps.

It follows with this pathetic "race card" & "class warfare" campaign.  The Dems want minorities to become dependent on government.  The GOP wants minorities to succeed and keep their profits as well.

Of course, what would an Obama convention be without blaming everything on Bush?  Yes, there will be lots of Bush-bashing down in Charlotte.

The reality is that the two parties are as different as ever.  The Dems are the party of "the welfare state".  The GOP is the party of the US constitution.

I won't be watching.  Frankly, I'd rather do my radio show or catch the Cowboys play the Giants.

The Obama reelection strategy is weird

Have you noticed how "weird" the Dems have been acting lately?

It starts with LA Mayor Villaraigosa, who said that the GOP is a party from 1812.  We don't know what he means by that remark.  At the same time, shouldn't the mayor of LA be doing something about his city's finances or public schools?

Pres BO said that the GOP convention was "black & white TV".  Again, we are not sure what Pres BO means.  Is he cynically playing the race card?

At the end of the day, we are watching a Dem party freaking out because the economy is a problem and it looks more and more like an Obama defeat.  (Gallup has the Obama job approval at 43%)

Two good men ready to govern

This is the best GOP convention since 1980, or the year that Reagan accepted the nomination in Detroit.

I should add that 2000 was also good, or the time that Bush-Cheney left Philadelphia with a great message and a very united party.

We selected great teams back then and we did the same this time.

The Romney-Ryan team took a step in the right direction by making the case that this is a "choice election", a choice between the failed Western European model or the American way that gave us prosperity and freedom.

There were some great lines out of this convention.  My favorite came from our soon to be VP-Ryan.  He said that "everything was free except us", a reference to the totalitarian nature of socialism or liberalism.  That was good!

Last, but not least, there was Romney.  He is not a great speaker but he spoke well.  He is not Ryan or Rubio behind the podium but he does not have to be.  He must convince millions that he is ready to take over and do the most difficult job on earth.  I think that he did.  In fact, I agree with Barry Casselman that Romney is a "man taking charge":

"The Mitt Romney I heard in Tampa was a man taking charge. That does not guarantee he will win in November, although I think he will, but it does mean that, after all previous jobs and responsibilities, the years of campaigning, the ambition and the preparation, Mitt Romney knows he is ready to take up the toughest job anyone in public life is ever going to have."

Ann Romney was just great

Ann Romney is the Romney campaign "clean up hitter", lead off hitter" and "closer".

Mrs Romney was just fantastic in Tampa.

First, she spoke from the heart and we felt it.  Her words were sincere and beautiful.

Second, she recounted her life as a wife, mother and grandmother of 18.

Third, she reminded us that we are a nation of immigrants or people who came here to start a new life.

Fourth, she told us about her husband Mitt.  She described his integrity, business acumen and the character of the man she met many years ago.

It was a smash.  I have  never seen a convention speech like that before.  We will probably never see another one again.

Gov Romney needs to say 3 things about US-Latin America relations

Let's hope that it's Pres Romney next year.  Let's also hope that a Pres Romney understands 3 things about Latin America.

First, there is great danger in the potential association of drug cartels and terrorist groups.  This is a potential threat to our cities and our people.   We need to support Mexico and smaller Central Americans in their fight with the cartels.

Second, we need a quick presidential visit to countries like Colombia and Chile, a couple of strong allies in South America.

Third, we need more trade with Latin America.  It will create jobs up here and down there.  It is beneficial to both sides!

Romney-Ryan is in a strong position on the first day of the GOP convention

The GOP convention is finally here and Romney-Ryan are are doing quite well.

First, the race is a dead heat.  At the same time, Pres BO is still under 50% or the danger zone for incumbents.

Second, Pres BO's "nuclear attack" on Gov Romney did not work.  The Obama reelection campaign has spent 2 months trying to destroy Romney but it did not work.   They've burned through a lot of cash and the polls did not change.

Third, picking Ryan has energized the base and forced the Dems to talk about issues, such as the deficit or Medicare.

The race is not over yet.  There are still 70-plus days ahead.  Nevertheless, it looks to me more and more that we will have a new president & vice-president.

The Rangers and a few other baseball thoughts

The Rangers have the best record in the AL and are clicking just in time for the post season.  They are scoring a ton of runs.   David Murphy  has been on fire for weeks and Adrian Beltre is torrid.  Josh Hamilton is up to 107 rbi's!

The big baseball story is the LA-Boston trade.  It was "a salary dump" for Boston.   Frankly, I am not crazy about a team taking other people's overpaid under producers but that's what happens in modern baseball.
