Cubans and Halloween
As a Cuban American, I WILL NOT be offended if you dress up as Ricky Ricardo for Halloween…….we Cubans who grew up in the US think he’s hilarious and speaks funny too……enjoy it!

My sons don't "trick or treat" anymore but it's still great to see the next generation with their costumes knocking on your door.
To say the least, Halloween is a great excuse for us adults to eat those chocolate treats. I've had my share of "treats" over the years.

Our boys have grown up and left home.....so we've been out of the "trick or treat" business for a few years. However, we still enjoy all of those kids coming to our door looking for candy.

Happy Halloween: Our first Halloween in the US many years ago

Another Halloween and another time to remember our first Halloween in the U.S. Back in Cuba, it was "El Dia de los Santos" or All Saints Day on November 1st. Of course, it was a "day of obligation" or don't forget the mass today. And there was no candy on All Saints Day!
We had been in the U.S. about six weeks when Halloween came up on the calendar in 1964. My Uncle Orlando and family told us about the night. They suggested wearing a costume, walk around and say “trick or treat” when standing at the door.
We followed his advice and got lots of candy, especially the lady in the neighborhood who made the brownies that reminded us of the Cuban chocolate cake we had before food shortages and rationing spoiled everything in the island.
Our mother came along to help our little sister who was dressed up as Cinderella. My brother and I went as cowboys. It was a wonderful night. My favorite part of Halloween is hearing my mother say “trick or treat.” It sounded a lot like “tree ka tree.” And explaining to her why there were so many “calabazas” or pumpkins.
So many Halloweens have come and gone since that night in 1964. Things changed and then it was our sons' turn to dress up as Indians or should I say indigenous people so no one is offended. Another year it was Dallas Cowboys about to play the Washington Redskins, another thing of the past. Or one year they just took off with their friends and came home with lots of bags full of everything. Of course, everyone remembers the morning after when all that chocolate had kids saying that they couldn't go to school because their stomachs were upset.
Today, our Halloween is hearing about the little grandchildren going "trick treating" and watching videos and photos by phone. Last but not least, we have candy ready in case the new generation knocks on the door.
Nothing will replace that first Halloween and especially explaining so many things to our mother who was proud of my sister's dress and had no clue of what the holiday was about.

Happy # 90 Jim Perry
Jim Perry was the other good pitcher in the family. His brother is Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry.
Jim broke with the Indians in 1959 and won 18 in his second year. He was traded to Minnesota in 1963 and that's where he won the 1970 AL Cy Young: 24-12 with a 3.04 ERA.
Perry retired with 215 wins and a 3.45 ERA. He was a very good pitcher.

Sunday evening in 1938 was prime-time in the golden age of radio, and millions of Americans had their radios turned on. But most of these Americans were listening to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy “Charlie McCarthy” on NBC and only turned to CBS at 8:12 p.m. after the comedy sketch ended and a little-known singer went on. By then, the story of the Martian invasion was well underway.Welles introduced his radio play with a spoken introduction, followed by an announcer reading a weather report. Then, seemingly abandoning the storyline, the announcer took listeners to “the Meridian Room in the Hotel Park Plaza in downtown New York, where you will be entertained by the music of Ramon Raquello and his orchestra.” … An announcer broke in to report that “Professor Farrell of the Mount Jenning Observatory” had detected explosions on the planet Mars. Then the dance music came back on, followed by another interruption in which listeners were informed that a large meteor had crashed into a farmer’s field in Grovers Mills, New Jersey.Soon, an announcer was at the crash site describing a Martian emerging from a large metallic cylinder. “Good heavens,” he declared, “something’s wriggling out of the shadow like a gray snake. Now here’s another and another one and another one. They look like tentacles to me … I can see the thing’s body now. It’s large, large as a bear. It glistens like wet leather.” But that face, it… it … ladies and gentlemen, it’s indescribable…”The Martians mounted walking war machines and fired “heat-ray” weapons at the puny humans gathered around the crash site. They annihilated a force of 7,000 National Guardsman, and after being attacked by artillery and bombers the Martians released a poisonous gas into the air. Soon “Martian cylinders” landed in Chicago and St. Louis. The radio play was extremely realistic, with Welles employing sophisticated sound effects and his actors doing an excellent job portraying terrified announcers and other characters.
Then he can tell us about the lady’s assistant who is married to a rather bizarre fellow addicted to sending strange texts to young women.

My first post from 2004: Bush will win

(This is my first post from the blog)
Bush will win.
The popular vote will be 52-47. It may be closer, such as 50-49, if Kerry wins California and New York by over 15 points.
New Jersey is a Bush surprise. Gore won NJ by over 15 points!
Add Pennsylvania to that surprise list.
The electoral college will put Bush at around 300 votes.
P.S. The final vote was 51-48% and President Bush got 286 Electoral votes. So I was pretty close!
2011 and that series still hurts!

1991 and probably the best game 7 of our generation
The Twins had won in 1987 and came back for another title.
The Braves had struggled in the 1980's and started their amazing run of 14 consecutive divisional titles under Bobby Cox.
Game 7 featured veteran Jack Morris and young John Smoltz.
The game was 0-0 after 9 innings. The Twins finally scored in the bottom of the 10th and won 1-0.
It was a great game and probably one of the very best World Series game ever.

Reagan’s words and our family
We recalled this week that President Reagan passed away in June 2004. Today, we remember that the California GOP nominated Ronald Reagan for governor. Yes, it started in the Golden State. I guess that it was a bit different back then.
He went on to win in 1966 and then reelection in 1970. Some of you may remember then-governor Reagan speaking at the 1968 and 1972 GOP conventions. In fact, there was a short-lived movement to draft Reagan in 1968.
After leaving office in 1974, Pres. Reagan began writing a weekly column and doing radio messages. It was about this time that I began to take an interest in his messages.
In 1976, he challenged President Gerald Ford and took it to the Kansas City convention. I was a volunteer in that primary fight against President Ford.
In 1980, Reagan was elected president and reelected in 1984.
We can say that it all started today in 1966.
However, it probably really started with that great speech supporting Senator Goldwater in October 1964. It was called “A time for choosing” and revealed Ronald Reagan’s incredible ability to communicate conservative principles. Our family had just arrived in the U.S. and a part of that speech created some very good dinner table conversation at our home. This is what he said:
Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.
Reagan's words touched our family. I did not know back then that I'd be voting for him someday. His words were discussed at our dinner table. I hope that young people today learn that if we lose freedom then there’s no place to escape. No place.

Game 6 of 2011 Series: What happened Nelson?
We remember one of the craziest games in baseball history. I am talking about game 6 of the 2011 World Series. The Rangers went into the bottom of the 9th with a 2 run lead. The Cardinals tied the game when Nelson Cruz missed a fly ball.
To be fair, we should add that Cruz was one of the big reasons that Texas was in the Series.
Josh Hamilton hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 10th. However, the Cardinals came back again.
It finally ended in the bottom of the 12th when Freese hit a walk off HR.
Texas was within a strike in the 9th and 10th and could not close it. It still hurts!

1970: "Jesus Christ Superstar" on Broadway
The composers were Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The show was very successful on Broadway. Later, they made it into a movie.
The soundtrack was very popular but I don't remember any songs other than "I don't know how to love him" by Yvonne Elliman. It was also recorded later by Helen Reddy.

1986: Bill Buckner, great player but a bad moment in game 6
And then the unthinkable happened when a routine ground ball went between Bill Buckner's legs.
It was a case of very bad luck for a great player like Buckner.
Bill Buckner hit .289 with 2,715 hits and a .408 on-base average. In other words, there was a lot more to his career than missing that ground ball in game 6 of the 1986 World Series.
He was a tough out, a great competitor and the kind of guy that you wanted on your team.
Tough day for a great major league player.
