A few weeks ago, Mr. Trump took a cheap shot against Senator McCain. How does Mr. Trump do this? He didn't serve in the U.S. military; he wasn't held as a political prisoner. Did he talk with the men in the infamous Hanoi Hilton and their view of Mr. McCain?
I wonder if Mr. Trump would have had the courage of a young McCain in that prison. What kind of an idiot would say something like this:
"He was a war hero because he was captured," Trump said at the Family Leadership Summit, in Ames, Iowa. "I like people who weren't captured."
Now he takes a cheap shot at President Bush by saying that 9-11 happened on his watch:
"When you talk about George Bush, I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time," Trump said on Bloomberg TV.
Again, how stupid can we get? The Civil War happened on President Lincoln's watch. Pearl Harbor happened on President Roosevelt's watch. And so on!
This is the side of Mr. Trump that makes me question whether he is serious about running for president or silently working to elect Secretary Clinton. I did not hear Mr. Trump say anything about President Clinton and how Osama bin Laden's organization grew on his watch. Or President Clinton's inaction to respond to embassy bombings and how that projected weakness.
Like anyone else, Mr. Trump is entitled to his opinion about the Bush presidency. He is not entitled to take cheap shots and disrespect a president who kept us safe for his two terms. Furthermore, he left Iraq in far better shape than it is after President Obama's premature withdrawal.
I would love to see a challenger – say, Dr. Carson or Senator Rubio – take Mr. Trump head-on these comments. In my mind, there is a difference between Mr. Trump the non-politician and Mr. Trump the man who makes a lot of stupid statements. The former may please a lot of those who want an outsider. The latter will lose a debate against a better-prepared Secretary Clinton.
