Mexico and Trump

Over the last 18 months, we’ve witnessed an amazing response from Mexico about now president-elect Trump. It started with justified outrage at Mr. Trump’s remarks (I did not like them either) to a current level of hysteria that even serious Mexicans are having second thoughts about. As my good Mexican friend said: “Teniamos problemas antes de Trump”  or we had problems before Trump.
Mexico will likely get to like President Trump for a couple of reasons, as my friend Allan Wall posted yesterday:
I don’t think a Trump presidency will be a disaster for Mexico.
In fact, there are things that the Mexican government can do to work together constructively with Trump.
After all, diplomacy is not about “liking people,” but about finding common interests between nations.
And there is plenty there to work with between the U.S. and Mexico.
Let’s look at some of the areas where Mexico and President Trump may find common ground.
As Allan mentioned, most of the people coming to the U.S. are not Mexicans. Instead, Mexico has become an avenue to “el norte” or simply a pathway for people from Central America, and other places. Many of these people are flooding Mexico and creating problems that did not exist when Mexicans were going north and sending dollars south.
Second, Mexico faces a Chinese threat, too. In fact, China is a bigger threat to Mexico because they are both promoting themselves as a destination for cheap labor. China is winning that fight because it manipulates its currency.
Third, the border wall, or “muro” as they call it south of the border, may have a lot more support in Mexico than they will admit. At the moment, the U.S.-Mexico border is chaotic and most Mexicans know it. The border, specially the isolated areas between the cities, is controlled by cartels who send us drugs while we send them cash. The wall won’t stop us from consuming, but it will complicate the easy path that cartels have to bring it north. It will also stop people from coming south with bags of cash and guns.
And finally, don’t blame the peso’s slippage on Trump. It fell in March 2009 and I don’t remember anyone blaming President Obama’s campaign statements about renegotiating NAFTA.
Changes in the peso probably have more to do with the price of oil. By the way, the best medicine for the Mexican peso is a strong U.S. economy, i.e. more trade with Mexico!
Let’s give this thing a bit of time. My guess is that many Mexicans may conclude that “el Trump no es tan malo” or he is not so bad.

Remember when they boasted about their Electoral College lock?

2016ecmaplarge

As the song goes: “What a difference a day makes, 24 little hours…..”
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we heard about the Democrats’ lock on the Electoral College.
This is from the New York Times two days before Election Day:
Hillary Clinton has a consistent and clear advantage in states worth at least 270 electoral votes, even if the race has undoubtedly tightened over the last few weeks. But even that understates the challenge facing Mr. Trump’s campaign: It’s not at all obvious where he has his best chance of breaking through, making it harder for him to concentrate his efforts over the last days of the campaign.
In other words, no one thought that Mr. Trump could win Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. There is even a story out there the Clinton team was popping champagne on the plane.
To be fair, I thought that Mrs. Clinton would win the Electoral College, too. In fact, I was pondering the idea of Mr. Trump winning the popular vote and Mrs. Clinton cracking the magic 270 by just a bit.
Today, we are hearing that Senator Barbara Boxer and a few others are hoping to eliminate the Electoral College.
Here is my message to Democrats still coping with the Election Night that none of them predicted.
First, Electoral College “locks” are good until someone cracks the lock, as Mr. Trump did in 2016. Remember when Virginia was solid red?
Second, the Democrats have much bigger problems than amending the way that we elect presidents. They can start by understanding why they lost the presidency, underperformed in U.S. Senate races and especially their disappearance from state legislatures. In other words, you can drive from the California border to the Atlantic coast and not drive through a district with a Democrat state rep or U.S. congressman.
Frankly, I called for a change in the Electoral College. I did not call for a direct vote but rather changing the “winner take all” to handing out votes based on the number of districts won by a presidential candidate. My idea would have given Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton a few more EV’s but not change the results.
The bottom line is that Democrats lost working-class voters. They should concentrate on winning them back. They could start by focusing on manufacturing rather than global warming.

Porcello was 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA.    Scherzer was 20-7 with a 2.98 ERA.     It was his second Cy Young in 4 seasons.    He is also the 6th pitcher to win the award in both leagues.

No Harry Reid in 2017

Is there a more despicable person in Washington than Senator Harry Reid?
We remember his outrageous remarks about Governor Romney’s taxes in 2012. This is what he said about the election of Mr. Trump:
Departing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid lashed out at Donald Trump on Friday as “a sexual predator who lost the popular vote and fueled his campaign with bigotry and hate.”
The Nevada Democrat said in a statement that “If Trump wants to roll back the tide of hate he unleashed, he has a tremendous amount of work to do and he must begin immediately.”
Reid said white nationalists, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the Islamic State extremist group are celebrating Trump’s election, “while innocent, law-abiding Americans are wracked with fear.” That “does not feel like America,” Reid said.
Frankly, it does not get worse than Senator Reid.
We are happy to see that President Obama and Senator Schumer congratulated the president-elect.
It was even better to see that Senator Manchin, who will up for reelection in very red West Virginia in 2018, fought back saying this:
“I want to be very clear, he does not speak for me. As difficult as it is for anyone to lose an election, the American people have spoken and Donald Trump is our President-elect. Senator Reid’s words needlessly feed the very divisiveness that is tearing this country apart,” Manchin said. “We are Americans first, not Democrats or Republicans first. Unfortunately, there are some who forget that at times like these it is wrong to put party and politics above our country.”
The Democrats will be a lot better off now that Senator Reid, and the Clintons, are in the past. Senator Reid was divisive and made the U.S. Senate unworkable for years. The Clintons, at the same time, corrupted the party and everything that they touched.
Maybe someday Reid will sit back and realize what a failure he was as a political leader in Washington.

The Democrats should have listened to Mr. Clinton

Former President Bill Clinton is ethically challenged, among other things. He is probably not the kind of man that you would want your sister married to. However, he does have a good idea of how to win elections — he won two of them!
In October, President Clinton warned the Democrats about a couple of things: ObamaCare and white workers.
This is what he said about ObamaCare:
“So you’ve got this crazy system where all of a sudden 25 million more people have health care and then the people who are out there busting it, sometimes 60 hours a week, wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half.
It’s the craziest thing in the world,” Clinton said.
He tried to clean up later, but everybody knew that he was right the first time. ObamaCare is indeed the craziest thing in the world.
With respect to white workers, he said this:
“There’s a lot of road rage out there because after the financial crash, it took a long time before incomes started going up again. There are still some families that if you adjust for inflation, their incomes are about what they were the last day I was president more than 15 years ago and their costs are going up. And that’s really tough,” the former president drawled as he campaigned on behalf of his wife, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“So when you get up every morning, and you look in the mirror and you don’t think you’ve got the power to make tomorrow better than today, that’s a pretty tough load to carry,” he told an audience that included union laborers.
Is there a bigger indictment of the Obama years than that?
On election day, these two warnings came back to haunt Mrs. Clinton and the Democrats. This is how Jim Tankersley explained it:
On Tuesday, their frustrations helped elect Donald Trump, the first major-party nominee of the modern era to speak directly and relentlessly to their economic and cultural fears.
It was a “Brexit” moment in America, a revolt of working-class whites who felt stung by globalization and uneasy in a diversifying country where their political power had seemed to be diminishing.
And so they voted for Trump, a man who took the time to say what many of them are feeling.
Memo to Democrats: You’ve been wiped from the Atlantic coast to the California border, i.e. 34 governors and countless state legislatures.
The Democrats cannot compete unless they care as much for white workers as “indocumentados”, a woman’s right to choose an abortion or boys who think they are girls and want to go to a girl’s bathroom.
It is the Democrats on the wrong side of history these days.
