Some thoughts on the Wisconsin recall

We saw two big themes coming out of Wisconsin.

Theme # 1 is that Pres BO dumped the union members.  I think that the left must be furious with Pres BO.  I agree with Paul Begala that you have to stand by your friends, i.e. the unions that registered and got so many to vote for candidate BO in '08.

Theme # 2 is that the people of Wisconsin said 'enough is enough".    I agree with former PA Gov Rendell that that the recall was a bad idea.  It was an overreach and that usually backfires.

I think that we saw the anger with the recall in Gov Walker's victory yesterday.  You can't get 53% of the popular vote in Wisconsin without adding some Dems to your ranks. 

For 18 months, we've been watching people flooding the Capitol building and stopping traffic.  My guess is that they don't represent the members of the unions but that was the image broadcast to the world.  The union leadership lost control of its extremes and let them become the face of the protests.

Add to that legislators "escaping" the state.  

Add the arrogance of public sector unions who feel entitled to our wallets.  What part about "unsustainable" don't thee people get?  We just don't have the money to continue making promises that we can't keep.  Can you say Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, France etc?

"Enough is enough" and that's what I interpret out of these elections in Wisconsin.  In other words, the unions would have been better off holding their fire and going after Gov Walker in the next election.

What does this mean for Pres BO and everybody else?  

First, the unions can not be happy with Pres BO flying over the state and "tweeting" his support the night before.   What will happen when Pres BO calls on the Wisconsin unions to get the vote out in November?

Second, we saw another manipulation of "exit polls".  Back in 2004, the exit polls had Sen Kerry beating Pres Bush.  It did not happen.  Yesterday, we heard that exit polls had it as a 50-50 race but it ended up 53-46%.

Third, Gov Walker's victory will energize other governors to fight the public sector unions.   This is perhaps the best consequence of yesterday's vote.

Remembering Herb Reed and the amazing Platters

We learned yesterday that Herb Reed passed away.  He was the last surviving member of The Platters, one of the greatest American vocal groups of the 20th century:

"Reed sang bass on the group's four No. 1 hits, including "The Great Pretender," ''My Prayer," ''Twilight Time" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."

The Platters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. Their recordings are in the Grammy Hall of Fame."

The Platters were a bit before my time but great music is great music.  They recorded some fantastic songs.  They had a wonderful and unique style.   The Platters were classy and elegant, a couple of qualities missing from a lot of today's pop music.

Why isn't Pres Calderon of Mexico screaming about "Fast & Furious"?

This is weird, very weird.  How do you explain the silence in Mexico about Fast & Furious?  

To recall, Fast & Furious put 2,000 guns in the hands of Mexican cartels.  

We hear from the Mexican government that these guns have killed over 300 people.  

We also hear that the Mexican government was not consulted about this program.  (See what the Mexican ambassador to the US said: Mexico left in the dark on Fast and Furious)

So why in the world isn't Pres Calderon on the phone or publicly calling on Pres BO to explain what happened?

Can anyone identify a bigger breach of Mexican sovereignty than to have the US government "hand" 2,000 high powered weapons to criminal elements terrorizing the country?

Today, we learned this:

"A House investigative committee said Tuesday it has obtained new information from wiretaps related to the Obama administration’s Operation Fast and Furious that suggests high-ranking officials know more than they are telling Congress about the flawed weapons sting." (FOX)

Frankly, I am very surprised with the Mexican reaction and the patience with the Obama administration.

Twilight Zone: Mariela "SI" but Walesa "NO"

We've all had our share of Mariela Castro's visit and commentaries in the US.  

First, she is now an expert on "gay rights".    Wonder how all of those "gays" mistreated by the Castros feel about that?

Second, the "citizen of the world" endorsed Pres BO.

Bizarre and very bizarre.  Do you recall the last time that a family member of a hostile country came here and made such declarations?

It gets more bizarre when you compare Mariela's treatment with Lech Walesa, the former president of Poland.

Of course, we remember Mr Walesa as the leader of Solidarity, the labor union that stood up to the communists in Poland.  He was elected president a few years later and remains one of the great voices of freedom.

We learned that the Obama administration declined to have LechWalesa stand in for the late Jan Karski, who posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I am sorry but that is bizarre.  

Of course, Pres BO & Poland have not had a good relationship.   Back in 2009, Pres BO canceled plans for a joint missile defense system between the United States and Poland, one of our most dependable post-Cold War NATO allies.

More recently, Pres BO insulted the Poles with remarks about "Polish death camps."

Am I missing something or is this how Pres BO treats our allies?

"Hispanos" hit very hard by today's economic numbers

We say it again:  Hispanics are very concerned about the economy.  Immigration reform is important to some but getting, or keeping, a job is important to all.

Friday's jobs report was bad.  It was really bad for Hispanics:

"The Hispanic unemployment rate jumped from 10.3% in April to 11% in May as the economy added only 69,000 jobs, the Labor Department reported. 

The disappointing job numbers come as Hispanic voters — who voted by 67%-31% for Obama in 2008 — are showing signs of diminished enthusiasm about the November election."  (USAToday)

Some Hispanics have the option of going home.  In fact, a lot of them have walked south.  However, most of them can't go "home" because this is "home".

What a great ad to mock Pres BO and the lefty "Hollywoodies"

We hear that the Obama campaign is having a hard time finding a "theme" or "message".

First, it was the class warfare, the senseless attacks on the rich.  It did not work because Americans understand that poor people don't post "help wanted" ads. 

Second, it was that the GOP was going to throw your grandma off the bridge by cancelling her Social Security or Medicare service.  It did not work because most Americans are not stupid.

Third, it was Romney is going to send your "abuela" back to Mexico.  It did not work because it is the Obama economy sending "abuela, tio and primo" back to Mexico.  Also, it did not help that Pres BO had big congressional majorities and never proposed an immigration reform package like promised.

Fourth, it was the GOP wants to cancel your "birth control".  It did not work because most American women are more concerned with high gasoline prices than providing "free pills" to college students.

Pres BO is having a hard time defining why he should be reelected.  So far, he has not come up with a good reason other than Romney wants to send your "abuela" back to Mexico.

On Friday, Pres BO called on Hollywood to promote his campaign.  He found a couple of Hollywood ladies to organize a little dinner, or the kind of event that you pay a fortune to attend.

It was also the same day that we got that awful jobs report.  He had a lot of good timing back in '08.  He does not have it in '12.

Is angry Maureen about to dump BO?

It is funny to watch but it looks like Maureen Dowd of The NY Times is dumping Pres BO:

"In some ways, he’s still finding himself, too absorbed to see what’s not working. But the White House is a very hard place to go on a vision quest, especially with a storm brewing."

Like so many who voted for candidate BO, Maureen Dowd voted for an empty vessel.  He had no record,  He had never governed a city or state.  He had never run a private or public enterprise.  Worse than that, he was whatever you wanted him to be.

Unfortunately for Maureen and others, candidate BO became Pres BO.  It is a lot harder to be president than a candidate.  He is now the man who has to make decisions rather than the charmer who told crowds what they wanted to hear.

It is entertaining to watch the latest from Maureen Dowd but there is nothing really funny about having a man in the White House in over his head.   We need a leader, a man who knows what he is doing.

Friday's bad economic news: Is anybody still drinking the Obama Kool Aid?

We woke Friday to a rather bad bunch of numbers about the US economy:

1) We created 69,000 jobs last month.  This is an embarrassing number.  Wonder if there is still anyone out there buying into the "hope and change" nonsense?

2) The unemployment "WENT UP" to 8.2%.

3) The last quarter's GDP was revised "DOWN" to 1.9%.

Let's add it up:  Unemployment is UP, the GDP is shrinking and only 69,000 jobs were created in the US economy.

Can we officially declare that "the stimulus" has not stimulated?

Can we finally say that the Obama "class warfare" has hurt employers?  How can you "demonize" the employer and then expect him to create jobs? 

Can we conclude that European-type socialism just won't work in the US? 

We will probably hear all kinds of "excuses" from the Obama administration today.  They will probably blame Bush even though we are in the 4th year of the Obama administration and we just had the 3rd anniversary of the "stimulus" that was supposed to save the world.

Who failed here?  The answer is Obama's policies.  Check out today's WSJ editorial:  Are we finally ready to debate a change in the policies that have led to this pass?

Who failed too?  It was all of those people "drunk with change" who digested all of the platitudes and nonsense from the Obama '08 campaign. 

Don't blame me!  I voted for McCain!

Dear Mariela: Your family is the mafia NOT the Cuban Americans who want freedom for Cuba

We continue our posts about Mariela Castro's trip to the US.  

As a proud Cuban-American, and the son of parents who stood for freedom in Cuba, I find Mariela Castro repulsive.

We were saddened to see people cheer Mariela in San Francisco.  We are happy that many "gay groups" in the US are not buying the nonsense that Mariela Castro is pushing. 

We saw last week a "gay reaction" in South Florida:

"Gay Cuban Americans in Miami are furious that Fidel Castro's niece is meeting this week and next with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists in San Francisco and New York City.

"For Mariela Castro, or anybody else under the Castro dictatorship, to say they are representing the rights of anyone is an insult to the hundreds of thousands who have either been killed, jailed or assassinated by their own hands, or the nearly 100,000 people who’ve jumped into the ocean looking for freedom who haven’t made it here," said Herb Sosa, executive director of Unity Coalition, Miami-Dade County's leading Hispanic gay rights group."

Let me add this about "gay rights".  I am against same sex marriage.  At the same time, I don't support discrimination based on sexual orientation.  I don't care about someone's sexual orientation as long as it is a private matter.  I do care about marriage, an institution that must be defended and can not be redefined so that Pres BO can collect millions of dollars from "gay" contributors. (1 in 6 Obama Money Bundlers is Gay)

Unfortunately, too many in the Obama "we need for our "gay base" to show up in November" administration have a very bad memory of how the Castro brothers treated homosexuals in Cuba.

In fact, homosexuals were treated as anti-social elements and often as consequences of capitalist materialism.   It was one of many human rights disasters in the island.

Again, it is a joke, an insult to our intelligence and a mockery to have Mariela Castro on a mission to promote "gay rights" or to give her endorsement of Pres BO.  (Someone in SF should ask Mariela about Reinaldo Arenas, Cuban writer)

The "war on women" theme has completely backfired on Pres BO & the feminist Dems

We learned this week that more and more women are turning to Gov Romney.

To be fair, Pres BO will get the majority of the female vote, specially single women.  He will also do well with black and Hispanic women.  (Cuban-American women will vote Romney)

The issue here is that Pres BO will not enjoy the kind of advantage with women that he had in 2008.   

Why isn't Pres BO clicking with women? 

My guess is that women, better than anyone else, do not like to buy a bad product the second time around.    Also, women are usually the ones who put gasoline in our cars.   My wife is furious every time that she has to pay high gasoline prices!

Second, the attacks on Anne Romney have turned off, and motivated, lots of mothers to show up in November.  (My friend Barry Casselman thinks that attacking Anne Romney will go down as one of the dumbest political tactics ever.  So far Barry is right!)

Third, the Dems' "Julia" power point show was so stupid.  It was the story of a woman who has babies without a husband and depends on government (Pres BO) from the cradle to the grave.  How many of you want your sister or daughter to grow up to be like Julia?

It was an insulting portrayal of women, as Melanie Strum wrote recently:

"Julia is a single, faceless cartoon – evidently an American everywoman – who depends on European-like, cradle-to-grave government assistance from pre-school through retirement. 

As if being tethered to a dependency-inducing nanny-state were attractive to American women  (or plausible given mounting debt) Julia, like her entitled European cousin, is the anti-Mary -- she can’t make it on her own.

                        

Sadly, this government-centered and soul-deadening narrative is as false and harmful to women as the notion that we should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. Both beget a toxic cocktail of subservience, loss of identity and worthlessness -- the antithesis of feminism.  

Franklin Roosevelt cautioned that dependence “induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber”…and “the human spirit.” "

The "war on women" theme has also failed because of the attacks on The Catholic Church with mandates about abortion.   My guess is that most women believe that women, not the government, should pay for birth control pills.
