Happy # 88 Sandy Koufax

The great Sandy Koufax was born on this day in Brooklyn, NY and we wish him a very happy birthday.

Koufax is arguably the greatest lefty ever.   His numbers tell the story even taking account the arm injuries that forced him to retire early.

No doubt, his stats from 1961 to 1966 are unique in modern baseball.

In other words, he was the most dominant pitcher during those six seasons.

Overall, he pitched 4 no hitters including a perfect game in 1965;

He won 165 games with a 2.76 ERA;

No one could touch him in the 1963 and 1965 World Series;

Cy Young in 1963, 1965 & 1966; and last but not least,

NL MVP in 1963.

Sadly, arm injuries forced him to retire after 1966 or age 32.

On a personal level, he broke my heart when he beat the Twins in game 7 of the 1965 World Series.    We ran home from school to watch that game and LA beat Minnesota behind Koufax's 2-0 performance.

A few years ago, I read this great book about Koufax.

The Trump comeback is the story of 2023: As we finish 2023, former president Trump is rising like never before. The RCP average has Trump leading within the margin of error in the popular vote but gaining in the swing states that will give him the electoral votes.

Doing nothing and laughing watching "A night by the opera" with The Marx Brothers

What a great movie.

You pick up a new line every time.

Today, I remembered that great line about "the sanity clause" in the contract that Chico and Groucho were negotiating.

Or, the scene where they are ordering food from that little room.....or when the cleaning ladies come in to make the bed.

How did these guys come up with so many lines?   Wonder if they just made up lines on the set?

Just great!

Happy # 77 to Bill Lee

The eccentric but very good lefty Bill Lee was born in Burbank, CA, on this day in 1946.

As a pitcher, he was a rare left hander who could pitch in Fenway Park.

He pitched most of his career with Boston and finished with Montreal:  119 wins, 3.72 ERA and 72 complete games.

Lee's pitching style was to kill you with a variety of "junk pitches" that had hitters speaking to themselves on the way back to the dugouts.

Off the field, Lee was also "The Spaceman" because of all his famous quotes.   He wasn't Yogi Berra but he had a few:

"I would change policy, bring back natural grass and nickel beer.
Baseball is the belly-button of our society.
Straighten out baseball, and you straighten out the rest of the world."

My biggest memory is game 7 of the 1975 World Series.   He threw one of those junk pitches to Tony Perez and it was the 3-run HR that put Cincinnati back in the game.

He was fun to watch on and off the field.    A baseball character when it was just fun to be a character.

"Que Pasa USA" and growing up Cuban in the US

For years, "Que Pasa USAwas a hilarious comedy about growing up Cuban in the US.

It was the story of a Cuban family's struggles as "refugees" in Miami in the late 1960's or early 1970's.

We used to call it the "refugee experience" in my household. My parents always said that we were "refugees", perphaps a reference to the politics that brought us here.

Like most things Cuban, it included parents, very funny grandparents and a couple of teenagers who were in the middle of everything. It sounds like my own family growing up in the US! It will remind you of yours!

My favorite show was the one about the grandparents taking the US citizenship test or the Cuban garage sale!

Why was "Que Pasa USA" so good? Because it was true. It was easy to see your mom and dad on that show.   Also, who can ever forget having a Cuban sister?

Happy # 80 Roy White

Image result for roy white images
Roy White was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1943.    He played his entire career with the Yankees and earned the name "Mr. Consistent".

Roy broke with New York in 1965 and played in some of the worst Yankee teams ever.   Nevertheless, he was a steady player who played lots of games, good glove in left field and decent hitting:   .271 batting average, a very good .360 on-base-pct, and 1,803 hits in 1,881 games!

Between 1969 and 1973, he walked 439 times making him a perfect # 2 hitter ahead of Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer and later Lou Piniella.

Roy got to play with the Yankees in the 1976-78 World Series.   He retired after the 1979 season.

I remember Roy White as a really good guy.

Happy # 76 to Carlton Fisk

We remember Carlton Fisk who was born in Vermont on this day in 1947.

We remember him for that 12th inning home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.   I saw that live on TV and it was a great moment and game.

Beyond that, Fisk also had a great career:   .269 career batting average, 2,356 hits, 376 HR and 1,330 RBI.

On May 8, 1984 Fisk caught all 25 innings in a 7-6 victory over Milwaukee.    Isn't that like playing 3 games in one day?   A week later, he hit for the cycle!

His best season was 1985:   37 HR and 105 RBI.

Great catcher and ambassador for the game of baseball.

"Joy to the World" by Father Gerald E Murray

This is a message for all of you from Father Gerald E. Murray the pastor at Holy Family Church. It was published back in 2006 and I saved with my favorite files. It's a nice read between congested malls and "Little Saint Nick." Father Murray was with St. Vincent de Paul in New York when he wrote this message for the National Review. I guess that some things get better with time. I think that you will agree…

1947: "Christmas Eve", a fun movie

Last year, I caught a bit of "Christmas movie" from 1947.   It is a delightful movie but it takes a while to get the story straight.

This is the story from TCM:
In the New York mansion of "Aunt Matilda" Reid, an eccentric octagenerian philanthropist, Phillip Hastings, Matilda's nephew, tries to convince a judge named Alston and a psychiatrist named Doremus that Matilda's extravagant contributions to charity are evidence of her senility.
In order to prevent Phillip from being made executor of her estate, Matilda promises the judge and the doctor that her three beloved adopted sons, Michael Brooks, Mario Torio and Jonathan will be home on Christmas Eve and will prove their competency in handling her money.
In order to contact the men, whom Matilda sent away to seek their own fortunes, Matilda holds a press conference and hires a private detective.
Michael, a playboy, is about to marry a Manhattan heiress named Harriett, and has written $75,000 worth of bad checks in order to buy her gifts.
After Michael's ex-girl friend, Ann Nelson, who still loves him, intercedes to make Harriett call off the wedding, Phillip offers to cover Michael's debt, knowing that the loan will make Michael too ashamed to come home to Matilda.
Meanwhile, Mario, a hot-tempered sportsman who has been running a gambling club in South America, has been located by an FBI agent.
Ten years earlier, Michael escaped federal agents in New Orleans following an indictment for illegal business practices.
The agent now orders Mario to help bring in an escaped Nazi war criminal named Gus Reichman, who had been secretly involved with Mario's girl friend, Claire, prior to his conviction at the Nuremberg Trials. Reichman has come to South America to retrieve ten million dollars, which he gave to Claire for his escape money.
Not until Reichman holds Claire and Mario hostage on a ship does Mario realize that Claire gave the money to the American Occupation forces in Berlin. After Reichman threatens to kill him, Mario escapes Reichman's guards and shoots him. Before he dies, Reichman fatally wounds Claire, whose last words to Mario are "I love you."
Claire's heroic death inspires Mario to return to the United States and face his past.
Meanwhile, Jonathan, an alcoholic rodeo rider, arrives at Grand Central Station.
There he meets Jean, an agent of the humane society who is investigating a baby racket and needs Jonathan to pose as her husband.
After being held up by the racketeers, Jonathan escapes with three babies to Aunt Matilda's. Jean follows, and Jonathan convinces her to marry him and help him rear the three little girls.
Michael, who at Ann's urging, has been investigating Phillip's management of Matilda's business investments, exposes Phillip as a fraud and a thief.
Mario arrives accompanied by a policeman and confesses that a decade earlier in New Orleans, he took a "rap" for Phillip in order to spare Matilda, whose money Phillip had used in a crooked deal.
Phillip is now arrested.
Seeing Matilda in the company of her upstanding sons, the judge and the doctor leave her to handle her own money, and Michael agrees to marry Ann.
It's a fun movie.   I'm surprised that it has not become a holiday standard.

Happy # 81 Jerry Koosman

Image result for jerry koosman images
Jerry Koosman was born in Appleton, Minnesota, on this day in 1942.   He broke with the Mets in 1967 and was part of that young pitching staff that included Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan,

He won 19 in 1968 and 17 in 1969, or the year that the Mets beat the Orioles in the World Series.

Koosman was 140-137 with the Mets with a 3.09 ERA & 109 complete games, or an indication that he pitched well with a lot of bad teams.    He was traded to the Twins and won 39 games in 3 seasons.

Overall, Koosman won 222 with a career 3.36 ERA.    Wonder how many games he would have won with better teams?   My guess is that it would have at least 275 games and we'd be talking about Koosman in the Hall of Fame.

Great left hander!

Happy # 79 to Steve Carlton

Who are the great lefties in major league history?

Sandy Koufax of the 1960's comes to my mind.

Randy Johnson of the 1990's makes the list.

And Steve Carlton who was born on this day in 1944.

Over an amazing career, Carlton won 329 games with a 3.22 ERA.    He also completed 254 games with 4,136 strikeouts.

His best season was 1972:   27-10, a 1.97 ERA, 30 complete games, 8 shutouts and 320 strikeouts.     The amazing thing is that he pitched for a team that won 59 games.

Great pitcher.    Maybe the best lefty after Koufax!

Happy # 75 Steve Garvey

Related image
We say happy birthday to Steve Garvey, who was born in Tampa, Florida, on this day in 1948.

Steve broke with the LA Dodgers in 1969 but did not get a lot of playing time until 1973.   It was great after that!

He had a great career:   .294 batting average, 2,599 hits, 272 HR & 1,308 RBI.    Garvey was the 1974 NL MVP and came in second in the 1978 vote.

Garvey was traded to San Diego and played for the Padres in the 1984 World Series.  He hit a walk off HR to beat Chicago in game 4 of the NLCS.
