Dems doing one more DACA

The Dream Act failed in 2010 in the lame duck session following the GOP victories.   The Democrats had 59 senators at the time but it did not pass because these Senators said no:

Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and both Montana Democrats, Jon Tester and Max Baucus. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin announced his opposition to the DREAM Act Saturday in a statement Saturday but missed the vote.

Manchin and Tester are still there. Hard to believe that they want DACA in light of the border mess.

The Democrats are going to try it again before the GOP takes over the House. This is the story:   

The press conference coincided with a push by advocacy groups on Capitol Hill. FWD.us, an advocacy group established by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, said in a release that "hundreds of advocates and DACA recipients from around the country flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with over 100 members of Congress" to urge passage of legislation.

That comes after a coalition of business leaders from firms like Apple, Amazon, Target, Meta, Starbucks and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urged congressional leaders last month to "swiftly pass legislation" on the issue.

How Republicans will respond remains unclear. While a number of Republican senators have long expressed interest in a deal that would see border security measures implemented in exchange for some form of DACA legislation, it comes as the U.S. remains in the middle of a massive border surge, something Republicans have said needs to be fixed before pathways to citizenship can be discussed.

Well, it's the massive border surge, stupid, i.e. 2.3 million migrant encounters in fiscal year 2022 and over 230,000 in October alone.  That's the problem but Democrats keep telling people what they want to hear.    

Sometimes what they're saying is crazy, such as Schumer connecting low population growth with immigration reform.  So a population not reproducing on its own needs more people?  Just ask the Europeans how that's working out.

Nothing will happen again.  The Democrats' problem is that they are not serious about fixing imigration.  I'd be willing to give "Dreamers" a path to legalization so that they can work legally or stay here without deportation.  It's a simple fix.  What the Democrats want is too broad and quickly turns into amnesty and will encourage more border surging.

Fix the border and convince U.S. voters that you care about border security as much as pandering to college students over loans.

The scary part is that the students fell for it

Some time ago, President Biden announced an executive order aimed at helping students with college debt, promising $10,000 in debt relief from federal student loans for most and $20,000 in debt relief from the poorest recipients who qualified for Pell grants.  

It was "Pandering 101" and really aimed at getting college students to vote Democrat ahead of the midterms.  

What else was it?  Well, it worked and the young voted for Uncle Joe and his loanforgiving ideas.  

They probably saved the U.S. Senate for the Democrats and cut losses in the House.

It was a brilliant political move reminiscent of President Obama's DACA executive order in the summer of 2012.   It energized the intended voters and a judge stopped it eventually.    

My guess is that both presidents knew that a judge would stop it but they got the desired electoral results from it.

What amazed me is that so many university students and recent graduates fell for this in 2022.   Don't they teach the U.S. Constitution anymore in school or is that in the section of documents written by dead white guys?  I wasn't the world's smartest guy on constitutional law but I would have laughed at the suggestion that a president could forgive a loan.   Well, that was then, and this is now.  Too many students today actually believed it and that scares the heck out of me.  What else do these people believe?  

Last week, reality knocked on the door:    

Last Thursday, U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman ruled that Biden's student debt relief program is "an unconstitutional exercise of Congress's legislative power and must be vacated." He permanently prohibited the Education Department from carrying out the program. Any appeal by the Department would take the case to the 5th Circuit in New Orleans, where the Department is likely to face defeat.

In a separate case three days later, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis issued a nationwide injunction temporarily barring the said debt relief program. CNBC reported that the ruling came after six states argued in a lawsuit that the program threatens their future tax revenues and circumvents congressional authority.

Let me be cynical and say that the Biden White House knew that this executive order would not survive.  But the real story here is that young voters believed it and fell for it 100%.   What are we teaching these young people at some of these schools?   It can't be anything worthwhile or useful if they can be played with in this fashion.

The Catholic Church in Cuba

Like many of you, I will go to Mass today and take communion.  It's easy and simple here but not so easy and simple in Cuba.

Down on the island, the church relies on flour donations to serve Communion.  It's shocking but true. This is from Catholic News Agency:

The Carmelite nuns in Cuba announced that thanks to the donations of wheat flour they have received in recent days, they will again be able to make the Communion hosts to supply the island's churches.

In a Nov. 14 statement, the Discalced Carmelite Sisters of Havana expressed their joy for having "experienced once again that the barque of the Church is the Lord who leads it."

The Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites of St. Teresa in the Cuban capital had informed all the dioceses Nov. 2 that it could no longer produce any more hosts because it had run out of wheat flour, a product that has been in short supply for months in the island.

Just days later, Father José Luis Pueyo of the Diocese of Villa Clara told the newspaper 14ymedio that they would have to break their remaining hosts into several pieces in order to provide for the faithful. 

However, on Tuesday, the nuns expressed their surprise to see that the news of no flour had gone viral, even reaching remote places.

"The impressive thing about all this is how it has moved the hearts of so many people of goodwill who, like the widow in the Gospel, have offered little or much so that the work can continue," the nuns said in the statement published in Vida Cristiana, a Jesuit-run weekly.

"Flour has come to us from our simple townspeople, from institutions, from Miami, Puerto Rico, Spain, and also the allocation that we have from the State," they reported.

The Carmelite sisters said that "the one who multiplied the loaves has shown his power with the multiplication of the flour."

"Now we resume work to be able to offer this service to the Church that is on pilgrimage in Cuba as soon as possible," they announced.

Happy ending, and maybe a miracle.  At the same time, this is another example of what we hear about Cuba these days.  The economy is a disaster, and it took a viral message to get flour for the hosts.  How many more flour donations will it take for Cubans to have Communion easily — something that we take for granted here?

As always, these horror stories remind me of my late parents, who would be angry and shocked.  It strengthens my conviction that the left destroys everything, even Communion on Sunday.

Kids can't read or write but...

Who knew that a couple of billionaires would fund indoctrination in our schools?  I would not object if our kids were being taught about capitalism and how a couple of guys like Gates and Zuckerberg became super wealthy in our free market system.  Unfortunately, these billionaires want our kids to hate the country and the system that made them rich. I don't get it; maybe you do.

This is the latest on the war on kids:  

Some of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world are funneling millions of dollars into schools to push left-wing education initiatives at the expense of students’ academics, one parent activist group says.

Parents Defending Education, a grassroots organization helping parents with resources devoted to fighting "indoctrination in the classroom," investigated where five prominent foundations were awarding grants.

Their study called "Cracked Foundations," found these organizations gave over $200 million to 70 school districts across the nation from 2017-2021. The parents group said that students in some of these districts were failing at math and reading, yet grants were being awarded to advance initiatives promoting equitable grading, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Critical Race Theory instead of academics.   

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Wallace Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Windward Fund were the focus of the study, which analyzed the last four years. All five organizations speak of their commitment to fostering "equity" on their websites.

To be fair, I'd love to hear from Bill and Mark on this.  Maybe the new GOP House can invite them to answer a few questions.  Most of all, I'd love to ask them about their business stories.  How did a couple of guys get so rich in the US?  They did it by working and fighting in the capitalist system that they now want to destroy.

Normally, I'm not a fan of congressional investigations.  They often turn partisan, and little gets done.  In this case, I want to know from Mark & Bill why they thought it was a good idea to promote these values to our kids.

Or maybe Bill and Mark are just a couple of guys who turned anti-capitalist after they made their billions.  We've seen that before.
