The 'Mrs. Russia' pageant has a new twist

Over here, we have the 'Mrs. America" pageant. According to the group:
“Mrs. America” features the most accomplished married women of America. Each year, 51 delegates (all U.S. states plus the District of Columbia) compete for the coveted title. The winner of Mrs. America goes on to compete at Mrs. World."
Well, I am submitting a photo and resume of my wife: Mother of three sons and now three grandchildren plus making the best morning coffee in North America should qualify her. I think that she'll pass with flying colors and be homemaker #1.
Over in Russian, they have a different idea for "Mrs. Russia". Let's check the story:
The Russian government announced it is reviving the Soviet-era honorary title “Mother Heroine” for women who have 10 or more children, as it confronts a population decline that has accelerated since its invasion of Ukraine.
According to a decree signed this week by President Vladimir Putin, the title will be awarded to those who “birth and raise” 10 Russian citizens, with a lump sum of 1 million Russian rubles ($16,645) received when the 10th child turns one.
There are some additional qualifications, however.
The children must have been given the “appropriate level of care for health, education, physical, spiritual and moral development,” the assessment process for which is not specified.
Meanwhile, all 10 children must be alive, unless they died during military, official or civic service, or in a terrorist attack.
The “Mother Heroine” title was established in 1944 and bestowed until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Recipients will receive a medal of a five-pointed star, the decree states.
They will be an equivalent rank to those with the titles “Hero of the Russian Federation,” usually awarded for bravery; and “Hero of Labor,” awarded for service to the state.
It's an interesting idea, especially for a country with horrible birthrates: It's currently 1.58 or below the 2.1 per woman necessary to keep your population going.
Will it work? Ten children is quite a task even for a woman who wants to have that many. My suggestion to Mr. Putin is that he may have more luck by promising not to send them to die in Ukraine.

Señor AMLO, it's time to turn, turn, turn...

Down in Mexico, the word is homicides. Unfortunately, there are too many of them.
As of Thursday, 128,923 homicides had been registered under [President Andrés Manuel] López Obrador, with more than two years left in his term, which ends in December 2024. This compares with 156,066 under the six-year term of Peña Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, Mexico’s former ruling party that for 71 years governed promising paz y tranquilidad, peace and tranquility.
Homicides under López Obrador have also surpassed the number during the government of his detested foe, Calderón, whose government recorded an estimated 120,463 homicides from 2007 to 2012. The numbers were compiled by The Dallas Morning News, using data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, Mexico’s official census bureau.
Calderón had declared war on drug cartels just after he won the 2006 election by a hair. Election observers approved the vote, but López Obrador called it illegitimate, leaving Calderón without a strong mandate. Critics maintain Calderón’s war was an effort to legitimize his weak presidency by rallying the country through what now seems like a never-ending war that’s cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
As for the economy, it's hard to open your store if criminals are burning cars or transportation vehicles. Security is a must, and sections of Mexico are not secure.
As for President López Obrador, he needs to reconsider his approach. He started out by preaching “Hugs, Not Bullets” or, an approach to cartel violence that focuses on so-called root causes, such as poverty and injustice. Obviously, the hugging ain't working because the criminal elements are not appreciating the embraces or exchanging their bullets for Valentine's Day cards.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación dominates fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking and has already eclipsed the notorious Sinaloa cartel. CJNG’s high-tech tactics include terrorizing local police forces with their drones.
Down in Mexico, it's time for President AMLO to stop hugging and do a little punching.
Dear President LO: Turn turn turn or the Mexican people will turn on you. And don't forget to copy President Biden and tell him to get serious about the border, too.

Finland's PM gone wild

Once upon a time, a Finnish Prime Minister dancing at a party would have been a local story and not much more. That was then and this is now. Finland wants to be a NATO member and they've complained about Russian aircraft violating their air space. Here is the story:
The airspace violation comes as Finland seeks accession to NATO, the U.S.-led military alliance Russia has described as a threat to its security.
Finland and neighboring Sweden indicated that they would join NATO due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, which both Stockholm and Helsinki strongly opposed. Unlike Sweden, however, Finland shares an 800-mile border with Russia and is less than 100 miles from Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city.
If ultimately admitted to NATO, Finland’s territory would roughly double the length of the military alliance’s border with Russia. Russian officials, including former President Dmitry Medvedev, have warned that the Kremlin could increase its force posture in its Kaliningrad exclave along the Baltic Sea in response.
So the dancing video does raise serious questions about the centre-left Social Democratic Party prime minister.
First, how serious is Sanna Marin? To be fair, it was a leaked video, but is anything private anymore? Didn't Marin realize that partying and dancing with a man not her husband would generate some reaction? It's fair to ask if she is serious or sober enough to handle an emergency had one arisen? Can you imagine a call to the White House:
"Mr. President, Finland here"
"Yes what's in the background"
"A little hip hop and alcohol but I need some airplanes to stop the Russians"
Second, how is this image of the "wild and crazy" gal going to play in the NATO negotiations? It cannot be good. I understand that some of her supporters say that she is entitled to a good time but standards are different when you are the prime minister.
So let the Finnish people decide on their Prime Minster's future. Nevertheless, the parents of the U.S. soldiers, who could be called to defend Finland may be saying that it's a dangerous world out there and serious people should be running things these days.
