Chicago has sunk a lot since our first visit there

(My new AT post.  Click on the link for references)

Back in 1967, our family lived in Wisconsin and drove to Chicago two or three times a year.  Our destination was a Cuban store where my parents bought foodstuffs, books, LPs, and a birthday present for whoever was celebrating soon.  I will never forget the Cuban who owned the store telling my father over coffee that Chicago's Mayor Daley was like Batista, the Cuban strongman of the 1950s.  He said Daley protects your streets, lets you make money, and is nasty to troublemakers.  I don't know if that was a good comparison, but we got his point about an orderly city.

That was then, and this is now.  My father's friend would not recognize the city today or understand how the voters could continue to elect such incompetent leaders like the current mayor.

Up in Chicago, Mayor Lightfoot got some bad news from the police.  They had a "no confidence vote" on the mayor, and it looks like they have zero of it.  This is the story:

Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police issued a vote of no-confidence in Mayor Lori Lightfoot Wednesday, citing poor work conditions and the cancellation of a march for fallen officers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The vote by the police union, as well as police Superintendent David Brown and First Deputy Eric Carter, was unanimous among as many as 200 active and retired rank-and-file officers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Reasons cited for the move reportedly include officer burnout and the department's decision to cancel off days for cops on several occasions — as well as a move from 8 ½-hour shifts to 12-hour work periods in preparation for possible unrest in the city.

It's symbolic or non-binding but still awful news for one of the worst mayors in the U.S.

The vote follows her announcement that she'd be giving preference to journalists "of color."  Apparently, she does not like that most of the press corps in Chicago is white.

What can I say?  Shame on all of those journalism schools for graduating so many whites.

In a normal time, such a vote or racist remark would have led to a resignation.  In a normal time no head case like Lori Lightfoot would have been taken seriously as a candidate for anything, especially mayor of a large city.

I'm left with memories of a time when going to Chicago was fun and we didn't have a shootout every weekend.

A little too much Harry and Megan

(My new AT  post.   See the post for links and references)

A few years ago, we saluted Prince Harry for serving in Afghanistan.  He could have stayed home, because the UK government was concerned about the prince being captured and turned into a PR victory for the enemy.  Nevertheless, he served and that showed a lot about his character.  Cheers for Prince Harry.

More recently, he is turned into an obnoxious personality.  He married Megan, left the UK and now is desperately looking for attention every day.  This is from Fox News:

Prince Harry recalled the "heartbreaking" reaction his wife Meghan Markle had when the couple learned of the bullying allegations made against her.

Just days before their sit-down with Oprah Winfrey aired in March, the U.K. Times reported that the Duchess of Sussex faced a bullying complaint made by one of her former advisors during her time as a working royal at Kensington Palace.

In his new AppleTV+ docuseries titled "The Me You Can’t See," which he co-created with the media mogul, Harry described how the 39-year-old broke down crying one night due to the "combined effort of The Firm and the media to smear her."

Okay --  but does anybody care?  I don't, and my guess is that most people are sick and tired of all of this whining from the couple desperately seeking attention and maybe money.

Memo to Harry and Megan:   Do something productive.  We all have problems and we don’t want to hear yours.

Memo to media:   Stop giving this couple the time and space to whine and tell us how bad their lives are.

Again, I don't want to hear it!

President Bush is right to blame the criminal elements

Former President George W. Bush is on a book tour.  I have not read the book but do plan to check it out.  Nevertheless, President Bush made a lot of sense when he spoke about the border crisis and the people profiting from it.  This is what he said:

"I’m sure they’re telling them falsehoods -- ‘follow me, I’ll get you in’ -- and these poor people have no way of checking that out and are finding themselves stuck at the border," Bush said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced last week it encountered more than 178,000 migrants in April, a jump of over 900% compared to April 2020. CBP encountered 178,622 migrants in April trying to enter the U.S., a 3% increase over the 172,000 encountered the previous month, which had been the highest number in 20 years.

"What you’re seeing is a border that reflects a broken system, and there needs to be changes," he continued. "There need to be changes in work visas, so people don’t have to sneak in to do work that needs to be done in America; there need to be changes in the asylum system to be able to adjudicate cases quickly."

He added: "And what people have got to understand is that a broken system makes it harder to enforce the border. A reformed system will make it easier to enforce the border, and so that is what has to happen.

We can agree or disagree with some of what he said.  However, I am happy that President Bush is talking about the people bringing them to the border and making money out of it.    Biden's border policy has two major flaws:

First, you don't open the border during a pandemic.  That's just common sense!

Second, you don't open the border without knowing that criminal elements would create the "transportation" system to bring illegals up north.  Another aspect is that we don't really know what their families in the U.S. are going to end up paying.  My guess is that a lot of people being brought to the border are making a "down payment" and the balance is due on the U.S. side of the border.   In other words, there are going to be people in our cities collecting that balance and it won't be by phone or letters.  They will knock the door and expect to be paid.

So thank you President Bush for calling out the smugglers and exposing the real flaw of Biden's border policy.

What's wrong with keeping an infant's heart beating?

(My new AT post....see original article for links and references)

The left is on insane overdrive over the news that the Supreme Court is going to look at Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a major abortion case from Mississippi.  The law intends to stop abortions after 15 weeks with limited exceptions.

Frankly, we have not seen so much madness from the left since Israel decided to defend itself this week.

To say the least, Roe v. Wade should be revisited.   It was written in 1973 before technology allowed us to listen to a heart beating in the mother's womb.

First, the opinion did not settle anything.  On the contrary, it turned every judicial appointment into a mad debate about a "woman's reproductive right."   It was abortion that gave us "Borking," the disgraceful tactics used against Judge Robert Bork by the Democrats in 1987.  They tried and failed with the appointments that followed because our side was better prepared for the "Borking.”

Second, it was an abuse of judicial power.  It's up to the states and the voters to decide something like abortion.  The Mississippi law simply gives the state the power to stop abortions after 15 weeks.  It's 12 weeks in Ireland and something similar in most countries.

Most of all, Roe v. Wade should be scrapped because of what it has done to the U.S. Senate and political discourse.  Remember the left during Justice Brett Kavanaugh's hearings?  Back in 2005, David Brooks was right on target about the damage that it had done to the country:

Justice Harry Blackmun did more inadvertent damage to our democracy than any other 20th-century American. When he and his Supreme Court colleagues issued the Roe v. Wade decision, they set off a cycle of political viciousness and counter-viciousness that has poisoned public life ever since, and now threatens to destroy the Senate as we know it.

When Blackmun wrote the Roe decision, it took the abortion issue out of the legislatures and put it into the courts. If it had remained in the legislatures, we would have seen a series of state-by-state compromises reflecting the views of the centrist majority that's always existed on this issue. These legislative compromises wouldn't have pleased everyone, but would have been regarded as legitimate.

Instead, Blackmun and his concurring colleagues invented a right to abortion, and imposed a solution more extreme than the policies of just about any other comparable nation.

Let's hope that the Supreme Court recognizes that the states have the right to regulate abortion, a medical practice.  Watch the movie Unplanned and you will see that an abortion center is a medical clinic, not a beauty salon where ladies go to change their look.

What will happen?  The Court will rule in favor of Mississippi and future judicial appointments will be elegant again.
