Thumbs up to Governor Christie over the issue of Joanne Chesimard

Babalu readers are very familiar with the story of Joanne Chesimard, the killer of New Jersey state trooper who was given safe harbor by the Castro regime.

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey wants to do something about it and we are happy to see that:

The Republican governor and presidential candidate sent a letter to the bistate agency Tuesday urging them to reject any regular flight routes between Newark Liberty International Airport and Cuba until Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, is returned to the U.S.

“It is unacceptable to me as Governor to have any flights between New Jersey and Cuba until and unless convicted cop-killer and escaped fugitive Joanne Chesimard is returned to New Jersey to face justice,” Christie wrote in the letter obtained by The Associated Press.

“I will not tolerate rewarding the Cuban government for continuing to harbor a fugitive,” he said.

Chesimard was convicted in 1977 in the death of Trooper Werner Foerster during a gunfight after being stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973; she was sentenced to life in prison but escaped and made her way to Cuba, where Fidel Castro granted her asylum.

The Chesimard episode is one of many missed opportunities with Cuba.   President Obama was so eager to open a US Embassy in Cuba that he forgot about the killing of Trooper Werner Foerster many years ago.   How do you put Raul Castro and his band of gangsters over the men and women who protect us everyday?

Hooray for Governor Christie.

The filibuster is killing U.S. democracy

For years, I was told that the filibuster was a wise idea to force compromise in the U.S. Senate. However, I don't buy that anymore. I agree with Peter Fenn:   

In the first 50 years of the filibuster, it was used only 35 times. But the last Congress alone had 112 cloture motions filed, plus threats of more.    This is the tyranny of the minority.   

It stinks, to say the least.

Yesterday, a majority of Senators failed to get the 60 votes to have the U.S. Senate debate and vote on sanctuary cities.   Add the Iran nuclear deal to the growing list of "votes" that the Senate doesn't do anymore because of the 60-vote rule.  

The net result is that Democrats do not have to vote "yes or no" on sanctuary cities, or something that most reasonable Americans are against.  They can hide behind something called "cloture" rather than explain their vote keeping sanctuary cities violating federal immigration law.

Sorry, but this is a profile in cowardice. It is legislators avoiding tough votes rather accepting their responsibility to take a position.

The official Democrat position was that this law against sanctuary cities was a misguided effort to crack down on immigrants and would not make the country safer.

Okay -- then make that case on the Senate floor. Tell your constituents that sanctuary cities are good for them. Go on record saying that you're okay with having cities select what federal laws they are going to enforce.

Once again, we sit back and watch this nonsense going on in Washington. Again, it's time to repeal the filibuster and force the U.S. Senate to vote rather than duck!

Carly not moving up

Maybe Carly Fiorina feels like singing Carly Simon's "That's the way I've always heard it should be". In other words, Mrs Fiorina cannot be happy with where she stands in the polls.

You may remember that she was the upcoming candidate a month ago. Her performance in that Fox News debate propelled her to the first team in the CNN debate. Everything was about Carly and how Carly would be facing Hillary sometime soon.  

I will confess that I was always skeptical, in large part because presidential campaigns are not for people who've never run for any kind of office or won an election. Dwight Eisenhower was the exception but the landscape was very unique in 1952 for such a candidacy. Also, General Eisenhower had just won World War II and millions of Americans were connected to him because of that experience.

Again, the polls are not working for Mrs Fiorina. The latest RCP average of polls has Mrs Fiorina at 5.6%.  The very latest CNN pollhas her at 4%. 

So what happened? I think that Mrs Fiorina ran into a couple of realities:

1) I don't believe that many GOP voters believe that she's a good candidate. After all, she has never won an election and her experience is solely in the business world. My friend Bill Katz, editor of Urgent Agenda, wrote this recently:  

The drop in Carly's standing is baffling.  She's a dazzler, although some people tell me she comes off as cold, a kind of mechanical candidate.   I don't think she is, but she clearly has to do well in next week's GOP debate and connect better on the campaign trail. 

2) Her success in the B-movie of the first FOX debate was also a reflection of her opposition. She was on a stage with people who are probably going to be dropping out for lack of money very soon. She was good, but no quite so good, in the second debate when better candidates were on the stage.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that she's dead in the water or couldn't comeback at some point. However, her window is closing and probably closing a lot faster than she realizes.

Rangers, Cowboys, Stars, Mavericks and other DFW sports

David Busby and Carlos Torres for a look at DFW sports teams...........the Rangers were eliminated and we look at their prospects for 2016.........they won't make any big changes but Mitch Moreland could be traded for a centerfielder of team depth.........the Cowboys are back in action............can they survive in the NFC East until Romo and Bryant come back?   The Stars are off to a nice 4-1 start.....what can we look forward to in 2015-16?.......the Mavericks start in a couple of weeks and face major question marks...........

El Chapo has more lives than a cat

According to news reports, the Mexican Army attacked El Chapo's compound, but he got away again:

Security forces hunting for the escaped drug kingpin Joaquín Guzmán Loera tracked him to a hide-out in Mexico’s remote northwestern mountains, but he fled as they approached, injuring his leg and his face, Mexican officials said late Friday.The government’s national security cabinet said in a statement that information from “international agencies” had directed the manhunt in recent weeks to the area known as the Golden Triangle, a rugged area at the border of Mr. Guzmán’s home state, Sinaloa, and the neighboring states of Durango and Chihuahua.There was no direct confrontation between security officials and Mr. Guzmán, who is known as El Chapo, or Shorty, the government said. The statement did not say how grave his injuries were, nor how long ago he fled.

El Chapo may face a very difficult time if he was badly injured.  No one knows for sure, but some injuries to the face and legs did happen.

The first problem is finding a doctor or clinic capable of attending such injuries.  He will die unless he can get to a hospital in a major city in the northwest of Mexico.  The Sinaloa-Chihuahua-Durango area is very rugged, as any fan of western movies can tell you.

Also, I'm assuming that the Mexican authorities are patrolling the roads and stopping suspected automobiles.

It's possible that El Chapo has advanced medical facilities at one of his many hideouts, but we are not sure whether he can get to them.

One way or another, it does look like El Chapo has run out of luck.  He is either going to be captured again or deteriorate in the mountains.

The next GOP debate plus El Chapo is on the run again

We will look at the next GOP debate.....it's time for some of the weaker candidates to drop out and give a smaller group a chance to be seen by the voters.......El Chapo is on the run again in Mexico.....He was found by Mexican soldiers but managed to escape after an apparent shootout........we understand that he is injured and in need of urgent treatment.......

It's time for 6 to move on

According to news reports, there are 6 candidates facing the tipping point, or the point when the bank account goes from black to red:

Half a dozen Republican presidential candidates are edging toward financial crisis, raising the specter that some may be forced to drop out of the sprawling field of contenders.

They all spent more than they took in during the third quarter, according to campaign finance reports filed on Thursday. 

The six are: Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, former New York Governor George Pataki, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

Together, they raised $6 million but spent more than $9.5 million during the summer on everything from postage to travel to campaign rallies. All six are trailing badly in the polls.

I think that it's time for these six guys to step aside and make the debates more meaningful. I write this as a huge fan of Governor Huckabee but reality is reality.

Huckabee and Jindal could be potential VP running mates if you have a nominee looking to broaden his appeal with more conservative or religious voters. The other 4 have no realistic chance of landing on the ticket at all.

It leaves Mr Trump, Dr Carson, Gov. Bush, Gov. Kasich, Gov. Christie, Sen Cruz, Mrs. Fiorina and Senator Rubio. It's time to give GOP voters a chance to see these finalists in some debates!
