Another poll and Beto is hanging around his favorite corner, or 42nd street.
The latest University of Houston poll has Governor Greg Abbott plus 7 over Mr. O'Rourke: 49-42. A few days ago, The Dallas Morning News had the governor up by 10 or 51-41. A bit before that, The Texas Tribune had the governor up 45-39.
Do you get the feeling that Governor Abbott is going to get re-elected? I got a whole bunch of polls that say the same thing going back to January.
Why is O'Rourke stuck in the low 40s? He is extremely well known and will likely get a gig at MSNBC after he loses this race.
Why is Robert Francis O'Rourke stuck at 42?
First, he has not given Texans a good reason to replace an incumbent governor. In other words, most Texans are doing quite well and people continue to move here. Our problem is absorbing all those people who want to live here.
Second, the lights did not go out. The grid held up despite one of the worst summers in memory. I'm not saying that everything is going well. We need more plants and energy. Unfortunately, Beto sounds too much like California on green energy and we know about the problems in the Golden State. It's tough to be banging the green tambourine with California going dark and Europe going cold.
Third, 2022 is not 2018 and the GOP was ready for Beto this time. Governor Abbott hit him hard at every opportunity, from gun control to defunding the police to school choice. Senator Ted Cruz waited too long to get in the race back in 2018. Like a well-coached hitter, the governor knew what O'Rourke was throwing from day on.
Last, but not least, the border is a problem for Beto O'Rourke. Honestly, he does not know what to say as we saw in this Texas Tribune report:
“I’m from the border. I understand this,” said O’Rourke, who is from El Paso and represented the area in Congress for six years.
“The people from Texas understand this and I know that we're all looking for a real solution. We’re not getting it from Greg Abbott. We’re not getting it from the Biden administration either. What we need is leadership.”
What specific leadership? We don't know yet.
Governor Abbott will get my vote. He fights for Texas and projects competence. On the other hand, Beto O'Rourke is fighting for headlines and not being very specific on issues.
So he is going to lose. It will be 54-45 or 55-44 when the votes are counted.

In the interest of full disclosure, I would have supported David McCormick rather than Dr. Mehmet Oz. He just seemed more prepared for the job. Nevertheless, Dr. Oz won and he is running against Lt. Governor John Fetterman.
This is an important race for two reasons:
1) The Republicans need to hold the seat to pick up the Senate. If you lose Pennsylvania, then you need to pick up two seats. Keep PA and all you have to do is pick up 1 seat. It's academic, as a famous doctor used to say; and,
2) Mr. Fetterman is a sick man. He had a stroke and we wish him a strong recovery. However, can a man recovering from a stroke campaign or speak on the floor of the U.S. Senate?
I don't think so, and I'm glad that the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an opinion about it:
If Mr. Fetterman’s communication skills have not yet recovered sufficiently to effectively debate his opponent, many voters will have concerns about his ability to represent them effectively in Washington. While he has gamely undertaken more campaign events and media interviews in recent weeks, Mr. Fetterman still speaks haltingly and relies on closed captioning to fully understand his conversation partners.
Mr. Fetterman’s campaign asserts confidently that he will make a full recovery, and that he is doing the hard work -- including speech therapy -- to accelerate that recovery. That is hopeful and laudable, but stroke recovery is notoriously unpredictable. The campaign’s early predictions proved optimistic; the more recent predictions of “several months” to a “complete recovery” may prove optimistic, too.
Again, we wish Mr. Fetterman well and no one should exploit his medical issues. At the same time, he wants to be a U.S. Senator and could be a tie-breaking vote on many issues. He needs to be on the floor and explain his votes.
Yes, we've had senators suffer strokes in the past. But they were already in the Senate. In Fetterman's case, he is a candidate, and the voters should be told the truth about his ability to serve.
If he can't debate Dr. Oz, or hold press conferences, or meet exclusively with MSNBC reporters pretending to be serious interviewers, then it would be better for him to step aside.

Over the weekend, I heard that song by Little Anthony & the Imperials: "Two kinds of people in the world." The words are a bit unsettling for the woke among us who don't know the difference between boys and girls.
The song actually inspired me to think that there are two kinds of speeches in the world.
Speech A is where you enumerate all of the good things that happened under your presidency. For example, President Reagan's "Morning in America" in 1984. Vote for me because you are better off today or something like that.
Speech B is what we've hearing from President Biden lately -- I can't say enough good about me but the other guy will make things worse.

President Joe Biden’s speech last Thursday, in which he declared war on those who voted against him in 2020, gave us a peek into the actual status of the 2022 election cycle.
By trying to make the election about the actions of the former president -- rather than about Mr. Biden’s own record or any of his legislative “achievements” -- he made it clear that the Democrats know they are in trouble unless something happens to shake up the race.
And they are hoping that the "something" is Trump 24/7.
It is true that Trump sparks something on the other side. They listen when they hear Trump. Is it enough to offset a bad economy and the overall dissatisfaction with President Biden's policies? I don't think so, and that's why the candidates running in these elections have scheduling conflicts when the President is in town.
What does this kind of divisive speech do for the country? Not much -- the partisanship will get more bitter. I was not expecting miracles out of Joe Biden as president but I did expect a better man in the Oval Office. Maybe he was not that moderate after all.
