The current Texas legislature session will end on August 8 and the new one starts the next day. The governor will continue to start new sessions until he signs the vote integrity law or they run out of money to support the Texas gang in Washington. My money is on Governor Greg Abbott winning this contest. The governor has time and the votes to move on. The Democrats in Washington do not have the votes and depend on someone paying their hotel bills.
The Texas Democrats were visited by fellow liberals over the last couple of days. It's nice but won't change a thing. It's sort of like your friend leaving you a voice mail after you got an eviction notice: "Bro, I'm sorry to hear that and we'll be thinking of you"
Last, but not least, Senator Joe Manchin is not supporting the "For the People Act". My guess is that the people of West Virginia are not into federalizing elections.
They are not getting help from President Biden either. He seems focused on an infrastructure bill and the Delta variant has not helped the Texans get their phone calls returned in Washington.
Even Beto, the self appointed defender of voting rights, is showing a little anger. This is what he said:
“We have not gotten to that level of urgency that this crisis demands from us,” O’Rourke said in an interview ahead of the march.
I guess not, my friend Beto.
To my knowledge, there is no polling data on how this detour to Washington is playing back in Texas. My gut feeling is that the Democrats have not gained many votes but have put their fellow legislators in competitive districts in trouble. Add redistricting to the mix and it won't be pretty.
A liberal friend at church, who voted for Senator Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 primary, put it this way: "Okay, you made your point. Come home and do something about it in 2022."
One way or another, they will return to Texas. My only question is whether anyone will show up to greet them.

Woke women's soccer team loses to Canada, will have to fight for bronze now
On Monday morning, I checked the news and learned that Canada had defeated the U.S. ladies, 1-0. I sent a note to a good Canadian friend saying "thank you." For the record, I have always cheered for the U.S. However, this is not a team I could relate to. I guess that I was not alone, as we read in this AP report:
Conservatives are celebrating Team USA's 1-0 loss to rival Canada in the semifinal round of the women's Olympic soccer tournament — an upset critics say resulted from American players' focus on social activism.
'Little Ms. Purple Hair and her team of woke warriors fell flat on their faces,' read an article on former Trump aid Wayne Dupree's website, referencing team captain Megan Rapinoe.
'The US Women's Soccer Team went WOKE and now they lost to Canada,' best-selling author and self-described security expert Brigitte Gabriel tweeted. 'That's what happens when you put political propaganda before sport and hard work.'
Let's not forget that this team refused to go to the Trump White House in 2019. Maybe they were angry that women were doing so well in the Trump economy.
The ladies went into the tournament as the clear favorites. They will have to fight for a bronze medal, a disappointment by any standard.
What if the ladies had represented themselves differently? What if they had understood how lucky they were to represent the USA? Instead, they went woke and let Megan be the face of the team.
In the end, they lost me and lots of other fans.

Canada's team that defeated the women includes a "transgender, non-binary" member, according to CBC News:
Canada's appearance in the gold-medal match in Japan won't be the only first for the women's soccer team when it takes to the pitch Friday (10 p.m. ET on Thursday in Canada).
Quinn, a 25-year-old midfielder from Toronto, will also become the first openly transgender and non-binary athlete to win an Olympic medal, as the team is assured of a gold or silver.
Quinn came out publicly as transgender in a social media post last fall, changed their pronouns to they/them and now goes by one name.
Since Canada's 1-0 semifinal victory over the United States on Monday at Kashima Stadium, setting up the final against Sweden, Quinn said they've been "getting messages from young people saying they've never seen a trans person in sports before."
Quinn played college soccer for Duke University in North Carolina, and is the highest-drafted Canadian in National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) history — taken third overall by the Washington Spirit in 2018. They now play for the OL Reign.
I am not 100% sure that a "transgender, non-binary" person has a Y chromosome, which is the real definition of a male (follow the science!). But assuming "they" does have one in each cell of "their" body, then the lesbian feminists on the team, like Megan Rapinoe, may join other lesbians in worrying that trangenderism is displacing lesbianism, as Eric Utter discussed on these pages a few days ago:
Several lesbian feminists were troubled by the survey results, as the number of Americans identifying as lesbian remained roughly the same, while the number identifying as bisexual or transgender skyrocketed. They believe that many young people who would have identified as lesbian in days of yore are now coming out as nonbinary or transgender. Egad!
The belief is that many masculine lesbians are now "transitioning" to "men," causing the lesbian community as a whole to shrink. Aimee Anderson apparently saw this phenomenon coming and stated so in an article she wrote in 2015, titled "The Death of the Lesbian." Anderson laments the loss of "old-school" lesbian culture and ominously proclaimed, "I care about the extinction of an entire people: lesbians."

Will Bill Maher save the left?
President Biden and Speaker Pelosi are scared to death of the left. We saw this in 2020 when they wouldn't condemn the looting and violence we saw from the coast to coast. They may never have said "defund the police," but every police officer knew who was watching their back. It certainly was not the Washington Democrats. Since assuming the presidency, Biden has allowed the left to open the border and write his executive orders. Has he pushed back? No!
Over at HBO, Bill Maher is on his own and calling out the "wokes." This is the latest from Maher:
Remember when your teacher used to try to scare you, they'd say, 'You know, this is going to go down on your permanent record?' No longer an empty threat now. This is called a purge. It's a mentality that belongs in Stalin's Russia. How bad does this atmosphere we are living in have to get before people who say cancel culture is overblown admit that it is, in fact, an insanity that is swallowing up the world?
That is not a conservative position, my friends. My politics have not changed. But I am reacting to politics that have. And this is yet another example of how the woke invert the very thing that used to make the liberals liberal. Snitches and bitches? That's not being liberal. The Associated Press is a real news organization, yeah? So why am I reading this headline: 'Olympic surfing exposes whitewashed Native Hawaiian Roots.' Yeah, the Olympics added surfing this year. Good. Surfers deserve to be recognized as athletes. I'm sorry, what I meant to say is no, that’s cultural appropriation...
I must say of all the violations of the woke penal code, cultural appropriation just might be the dumbest of all. First of all, there are 25,000 islands in the Pacific. How do we know a Hawaiian was the first to stand on a board in the water? It seems like something anyone in any ocean would eventually get around to. And if you’re a surfer, it doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, or in between you all taste the same to sharks...
Change is not synonymous with progress. Newer doesn't automatically mean better. This new idea that each culture must remain in its own separate silo is not better, and it’s not progress. And in fact, it’s messing with one of the few ideas that still really does make this melting pot called America great. Not everything is about oppression, stealing natural resources from indigenous people.
Well done, Mr. Maher. My guess is that he speaks for a lot of Democrats who are scared to death of expressing similar opinions.
Maybe Maher should have reminded the networks that the Olympics have been a ratings disaster. Maybe it's the time zone difference but more likely it's commercials and athletes who keep telling you how terrible the country is. To be fair, some U.S. athletes saluted the flag but too many people are just turned off by Megan Rapinoe and others.
Memo to the Democrats: Listen to Maher because he is the only one making sense on your side.

When baseball was fun and not woke
A few days ago, I exchanged an email with a friend. We are both big baseball fans but have not attended a game this year. Wonder whether we are the only ones? I don't think so.
The beauty of baseball is its history. For example, I never saw Joe DiMaggio play but I know just about everything about his amazing 56-game hitting streak of 1941. How does a human being get a hit against major league pitching for 56 games in a row? Well, Joe must have eaten a lot of good lasagna growing up.
Then there was Carl Hubbell throwing his famous screwball to strike out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in the 1934 All Star Game. Who said that the All Star Game was just an exhibition?
I do recall Bob Gibson's magical 1968 season. The historians call it the "year of the pitcher." I call it the "year of Gibson": 22-9 record, a 1.12 ERA, the lowest earned-run average of any pitcher since the Deadball Era. He had his own streak of 47 scoreless innings. He threw 28 complete games, including 13 shutouts. I remember running home from school listening to my little radio as Gibson struck out 17 Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series. Then we had a nice teacher who let us watch Game 7, but this time, it was Lolich, not Gibson, who celebrated the last out.
By the way, the nice thing about afternoon post-season games is that kids could watch them. My three sons usually didn't make it to the end of the night game.
Before he got kicked out of baseball, Pete Rose kept us busy every night in the summer of 1978. His streak ended at 44 games on this day in 1978. We didn't have the 24/7 news cycle back then. Therefore, most of us had to follow the streak on the nightly news or morning box scores. I followed some games on WLW out of Cincinnati, especially when the Reds were playing in the West Coast.
Rose's streak is one of my favorite baseball memories. It also reminds us of how much fun the game was before the woke stole it and the commissioner decided to become a mouthpiece for the Democrats.
So I'm avoiding the game this year as much as I can. I get my baseball fix by turning on my personal time tunnel and recalling the game before it got woke.
