Who's sorry now?

Connie Francis did not have CNN in mind when she put "Who's sorry now" on top of the music charts in 1958.   However, wonder if anyone at CNN is sorry now that President Biden is gone?

According to Variety, the numbers are in:

While it’s too early to conclude any longer-term direction for news ratings after just one week, the downturn could be interpreted as an indicator of what many industry observers had anticipated: With Biden in the White House, networks that have spent the last four years railing consistently against Trump have lost the main attraction that energized their audience bases, making it difficult to hold onto the elevated viewing levels.

Yes, the main attraction is gone.

President Trump was like J.R. Ewing, the famous character from the "Dallas" series.   Half of the country hated him.  The other half loved him.  But everybody tuned in to watch his antics.

Yes, CNN will get a boost from the impeachment hearings.  Sooner or later, that will pass too and no-drama Biden will drive the media crazy.   It's hard to keep three 24/7 news channels busy when there is nothing go on.

My guess is that CNN bet on a tight Trump reelection.  It did not happen. So say hello to "Gilligan's Island" because Don & Chris are a thing of the past.

Don’t forget about Buck O’Neill during Black History Month

We are celebrating Black History Month and I hope that we remember John Jordan O’Neil Jr. known to most us as Buck O’Neil.

Most of us learned about Buck O’Neil when he was a contributor to “Baseball,” the PBS documentary that was shown ironically the year that the World Series was cancelled in 1994.

I loved Buck’s stories and the many bits of wisdom that he shared of the Negro Leagues.  He had played with all of the legendary players, from Satchel Paige to Josh Gibson.

On the field, Buck was a first baseman and later manager of the Kansas City Monarchs, the legendary team of the Negro Leagues.

Off the field, Buck was a smash and became a great ambassador for baseball and author of some wonderful lines:

▪ Hug everybody you can, especially the pretty women.

▪ Drain the bitterness out of your heart. My daddy was a good man. He paid his taxes. He lived a good life. But he couldn’t vote. He was not bitter, though…

▪ Sing a little every day.

▪ Don’t smoke any of those leaves or put anything up your nose.

▪ Tell people you love them.

▪ Listen to old people tell stories. They might teach you something.

▪ Do a little showboating every now and again in your life. Remember, it was the so-so ballplayers that came up with the word “Showboating.” They were jealous. If you have something to show, go ahead and showboat a little bit.

Buck came to Dallas often.  I listened to a radio interview a few years before his death in 2006.  A caller asked him if he was bitter for not playing in the majors.  He said no and added that bitterness is toxic anyway.

Over the last year, we’ve been hearing a lot about Black Lives Matter and systemic racism.  I won’t deny history.  At the same time, it’s people like Buck O’Neil who lived under real racism who remind us:  “Don’t let anger boil up inside you. There’s too much anger out there already. Yeah. Too much anger.”

Yes, there is too much anger and too few men like Buck O’Neil.

Will Tom Brady save the NFL?

Just saw a note that Tom Brady is not going to retire if he wins another Super Bowl.  He is 43 and wants to play until 45!  That's amazing and a reminder of Nolan Ryan, who was 46 when he retired in 1993.  By the way, he was 44 when he pitched his seventh no-hitter.

Frankly, I hope everyone at the NFL office is cheering for Tom Brady to hang around a bit longer.  He may be the man who saves the NFL from its own stupidity.

You may remember how Cal Ripken saved baseball in 1995.  Back in the summer of 1994, the players and owners couldn't agree again, and baseball stopped.  I don't know if the players or owners knew they'd be canceling the 1994 World Series and risking the 1995 season as well.

The season came back in 1995, but the fans didn't.  It took a while for fans to buy tickets and watch baseball.  Many were wondering if baseball would ever come back.

Enter Cal Ripken, who took over the front pages with his consecutive game streak.  He finally caught Lou Gehrig and passed him in September.

Looking back, Ripken became the face of baseball and made the game great again, to borrow a popular phrase.

I believe that Tom Brady has the same potential as Ripken.  Brady connects with traditional fans, and that's exactly what the NFL needs.

Stick around, Brady.  The NFL needs you more than ever.

The Dems care too much about the people in Gitmo

Not long ago, many Democrats were worried about the "human rights" of Gitmo terrorists.  They blasted President George W. Bush when he put them there and then when a few rough tactics were used to get information.

They were so outraged that President Obama signed an executive order on day one to end this terrible stain in our reputation.  As you know, Gitmo survived the order, and it's still there.

The latest nonsense is giving the men in Gitmo a COVID vaccine shot.

As a practical matter, I am not opposed to vaccinating the Gitmo terrorists but not before millions of Americans get their shot.  What's the point of giving these men any consideration?  We can isolate them as much as possible until their turn comes at some point later.

Well, public opinion caught up with the Biden administration because the idea has been put on hold or halted.  The outrage came from New York and a few other places:

State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R-Rockland County) called the idea a "national disgrace" in a letter to Pentagon Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Dr. Terry Adirim.

"Every available dose slated for Guantanamo Bay detention camp prisoners should be immediately redirected to the Hudson Valley," he wrote.

"I have seniors and first responders in the Hudson Valley who are unable to receive the vaccine. Not a single dose of vaccine should be wasted on terrorists who killed American citizens."

I can understand the sentiment.  Why take care of other people before your own?  There are thousands of Americans in line for a shot, and no terrorist should jump ahead of them.
