Happy # 77 to the great Nolan Ryan who was born on this day in 1947 in Refugio, Texas. His numbers are unbelievable: 324 wins, 3.19 ERA, 5,714 K and 7 no-hitters. Ryan was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999.
The great Ernie Banks was born in Dallas, Texas, on this day in 1931. He died in 2014. Over the years, I've seen some great players in person and TV. Sadly, I never got to see Ernie Banks in person but do recall hearing #500 on WGN radio.
We remember Jackie Robinson, who was born in Cairo, Georgia, on this day in 1919. He died October 24, 1972.

We remember Don Maynard who was born in Texas on this day in 1935 and passed away January 2022. Maynard played with the Jets who won Super Bowl III. We remember him for a clutch catch in the AFL championship against the Raiders. It was that TD that put the Jets in the Super Bowl against the Colts.
Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1938. We know her as Etta James, one of the most unique voices of pop music. Her career started with gospel music and she eventually recorded in Chicago. She was the opening act with The Rolling Stones for a time in the 1980's and sang in the opening ceremonies of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics. Etta won 2 Grammys for her work.
Who saw the movie "Saturday Night Fever" many years ago? Maybe you danced to "More than a woman" and some of the other songs by The Bee Gees. On this day in 1978, the soundtrack LP moved to # 1 on Billboard USA. It stayed at # 1 for a long time!
We remember Wally Bunker who was born in Seattle on this day in 1945. Bunker had a great start with the Orioles. He went 19-5 with the 1964 Orioles. Bunker was one of the many young arms along with Dave McNally and Jim Palmer. In 1966, Wally pitched a 1-0 victory in game 3 of the 1966 World Series. It put the O's up 3-0 in that Series against LA. He ended up with the expansion KC Royals after the 1968 draft. Actually, he pitched well in KC, won 12 games and threw the first pitch in the expansion team's history. Bunker retired after after the 1971 season.

It was 15 years ago that President Obama signed an executive order to close Gitmo and keep a campaign promise. Closing Gitmo was supposed to restore our place in the halls of freedom and due process; or so we heard during the campaign of “hope and change.”
Well, where are we now? Many of the bad guys are still in Gitmo and you don’t hear much from the former president about it.

We remember Neil Diamond who was born on this day in 1941.........happy birthday to a very talented man.....Diamond wrote and recorded many songs.....it's hard to pick one but let me try......I love "Stones" and the arrangement.......

Willie Mays was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame on this day in 1979. Mays played 21 seasons with the Giants, and finished up with the Mets in 1972-73. He hit over .300 10 times and retired with a career .302 average, won the NL MVP twice (1954 & 1965) and was selected 20 times as an NL All-Star. On top of that, Mays led the league in home runs four times and hit 660, or the second highest ever at the time he retired.

We recall today another anniversary of Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. Thankfully, it was overturned in 2022. The states (i.e. voters) decide abortion now and that’s a good thing.
We remember LBJ, or President Lyndon Johnson, the 36th president of the U.S., who died on this day in 1973. He was living in South Texas and watching his successor announce the end of the Vietnam War:
On the day of Nixon's second inaugural celebration, Johnson watched sullenly as Nixon announced the dismantling of many of Johnson's Great Society social programs and, the next day, that he had achieved the ceasefire in Vietnam that had eluded Johnson.
The following day, while Lady Bird and their daughters were in Austin, Johnson suffered a fatal heart attack at his ranch in Johnson City.
