What exactly will President Obama say on Tuesday night to turn public opinion around?
He can't say anything about Syria. I think that the public is against intervention.
He could bring Iran into the picture. Maybe he will make a connection between Iran and Syria, as Bill Katz posted on Sunday:
"Dwight Eisenhower once said, "If a problem cannot be solved, enlarge it." Bringing the Iran question into the Syria debate is a wise move by the White House. First, Americans do "get" Iran. Second, it enlarges Syria, and Americans may buy into the notion that this really is a major problem. Third, when you enlarge a problem, you own it. You decide what gets enlarged, and you often have a greater degree of control.
But, as we've noted, it may be too late."
Beyond that "it's too late", I don't believe that he can get his left wing base to join a 'this is really about Iran" speech. My guess is that most of the American left won't like President Obama's tone on Tuesday night.
