Americans understand impeachment, but the Democrats don’t

On the day that Democrats put two articles of impeachment on the table, we see this polling data: the latest Quinnipiac survey shows more than half of voters are now saying Trump shouldn’t be removed from office.

Why is that?   Why are Americans moving against impeachment?

First, the articles are so weak, as we see in this New York Post editorial:   

He offers one on “abuse of power,” which covers all the efforts to get Ukraine to investigate 1) 2016 meddling and 2) the company that hired Hunter Biden. 

But it doesn’t explain how Trump “compromised the national security of the United States and undermined the integrity of the United States democratic process” or solicited interference in the 2020 election.    

Schiff contends Trump wanted “sham investigations” from Ukraine. 

But the inquiry produced not a single person or document suggesting Trump wanted Ukraine to frame his potential 2020 rival.

Nadler’s other article is for “obstruction of Congress,” centering on the White House’s refusal to cooperate with House hearings, ordering various officials not to testify.

Yet the legislative and executive branches fight all the time over compelling such testimony: It’s up to the judicial branch to resolve each battle — but House Democrats declined to go to court this time.

That’s likely why Nadler didn’t even go for an “obstruction of justice” article — one of the main counts in both the Nixon and Clinton impeachments.

A weak case and super partisan, to say the least.

Americans understand the reason for the impeachment clause.  It is there for those most unusual times in history when a president has engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors.

Abuse of power?  Every President from Washington to Trump would have been nailed on that one.

Obstruction of Congress?  What a joke!  Where were these Democrats when President Obama did not cooperate with Congress?

So the public sees through all this and yells “where is the beef?”   There ain’t no beef, and that’s why this process is a disgrace.

Call the airline if you are flying to Cuba….

The U.S. is clamping down on Cuba, as we see in this report:    

New sanctions against Cuba take off today as the U-S suspends flights to nine island destinations. The goal is to limit cash flow to the government and punish Cuba for supporting Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. 

Havana is now the only airport accepting commercial flights which is going to take a huge toll on travel plans for many South Floridians who go back to visit relatives and bring them necessities. 

Retired University of Miami Cuban Studies professor, Dr. Andy Gomez says this could prove to be a risky political move by the Trump Administration since it could anger Cuban Americans who supported him in the last election. 

Charter flights are not affected. Commercial flights to Cuba began in 2016 under President Obama.

Yes, it will have an impact on people who travel to Cuba.  It will have an bigger impact on the Cuban government desperately looking for every dollar in Florida.

Down in Cuba, the government is reacting by imposing price controls on small private businesses.

President Trump’s sanctions are timely and may actually force change in Cuba…. finally!

Impeachment and the economy

Some of us are old enough to remember the Clinton impeachment proceedings, from the vote in the US House to bombing Baghdad during the floor debates and then "a bus load" of Democrats going over to The White House to "celebrate" the impeachment.

 

We also remember the strong US economy.  It probably saved President Clinton because Democrats were upset with his behavior but the voters back home were happy with their economies.

 

We may be seeing a similar situation, as Charles Gasparino wrote over the weekend:   

The 2020 election will be decided not by woke Democrats, or even Trump’s rabid support base. It will be decided by people in the middle, who are enjoying a strong economy and rising wages brought by policies that are the antithesis of the current mainstream Democratic Party orthodoxy. They may not like Trump’s comportment, but they like jobs.

 

My guess, once the 2020 campaign starts in earnest, these voters will look at the Democrat alternatives, hold their nose and vote for Trump because it’s the economy, stupid.

Yes, I think that Charles got it right.

 

Furthermore, President Clinton committed a crime and his law license was suspended back in 1998.   So far, the only "crime" that I can see is an upset election victory over Mrs. Clinton.

2018: Baines and Smith in The Hall of Fame

We just learned that Harold Baines and Lee Smith were elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.  

Baines and Smith spent much of their careers with the White Sox and Cubs, respectively.   On the field, Smith finished with 478 saves in 1,022 appearances and Baines was a good hitter:  .289 average, 2,866 hits, 384 HR, and 1,628 RBI in 2,830 games.

Around Texas, we remember that Harold Baines was traded here in 1989 for a young outfielder Sammy Sosa.

Congratulations to both!
