Another thought about that fellow ‘Che’ on the T-shirt

Image result for che guevara images

Over time, I’ve read as much as I can about the myth or the legend of Che Guevara, the face you see at so many leftist rallies.  I found this one rather interesting: “Che’s Secret Diary” by Cynthia Grenier from 2002.
It turns out that Che had a bit of a “diversity” problem, as we would call that today:
Mike Tyson’s mighty rib cage boasts a sizeable tattoo of the late Ernesto “Che” Guevara, a testament to Guevara’s status as the marker of subversive cool. It’s a safe bet that Tyson hasn’t read The African Dream, Guevara’s recently released “diaries of the revolutionary war in the Congo.” Indeed, Che’s comments on his African brothers might just send Iron Mike to the nearest laser specialist.
Yes, Tyson and many others would be surprised about how the real Che felt about blacks everywhere.
Of course, this is not a shock to those of us who knew the real Che. I don’t mean to break your leftist heart, but Che was not at all like the figure we’ve seen idolized in movies or rallies.
Yes, it’s true that a younger Che took a motorcycle trip through the continent.  So what?  At the end of the day, Che was a killer, no matter how much leftist movie-makers want to present him as some romantic figure out to change the world!
Furthermore, Che’s ideas failed miserably in Cuba. His revolution was a disaster in Bolivia, in large part because he could not communicate with the natives he came to save.
The myth of Che succeeds only in the minds of the corrupt Left and the many idiots who wear his T-shirts thinking he is Jim Morrison of The Doors or some guy who played drums for a 1960s hippie rock band.
Che met justice, and that’s the good news of the day.

1953: From "Browns" to "Orioles"

The St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.   The Browns had been struggling for years and the AL approved the move on this day in 1953.

The 1954 Orioles won 54 games but drew 1 million fans.   The 1953 Browns had also won 54 games but only drew 253,000 fans.

It took a few years for the O's to get competitive but it was the right move for all concerned.

The Browns were in the World Series in 1944.    The Orioles made it in 1966.

His Majesty is a pretty nice guy but he doesn’t have a lot to say

To paraphrase the Beatles’ “Her Majesty,” The King of Spain is visiting Cuba but he does not have a lot to say.   I mean, he does not have a lot to say to the island’s dissidents, who keep calling for a meeting.
According to Juan Suarez, The King and Queen are visiting Cuba and and saying “nada” about the repression:
Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia arrived in Cuba for an official visit on Nov. 11, just days before the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana by Spanish representatives.
Before the royal visit it was announced that the Royal couple would not meet with dissidents.
Amnesty International sent King Felipe a letter, made public on Nov. 8, petitioning him to make four requests during his visit to Cuba: Release six Cuban prisoners of conscience, José Pilot Guide , Silverio Portal Contreras, Mitzael Díaz Paseiro, Eliecer Bandera Barrera, Edilberto Ronal Azuaga, and Roberto de Jesús Quiñones Haces and repeal their sentences; Inform José Daniel Ferrer García of the charges against him or release him. Meanwhile, ensure that he has access to his family, lawyer and medical care; End harassment of Cuban artists Luis Manuel Otero and Amaury Pacheco; Repeal Decree 349 that prohibits all artistic activity without prior approval from the regime.
Amnesty International’s letter gives the King the guidepost to sit down with the Cuban government.
At the very least, he should demand the release of some of these prisoners on humanitarian grounds.
The King should call on Cuba to show that real change is happening by giving artists more freedom to do their thing.
So why won’t the King do it?   Well, I guess that the official position is that the King does not do politics.
Unfortunately, you can’t go to Cuba to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Havana, the city that served as the headquarters of Spain’s expansion to the New World, and avoid politics.

The evolution of Coca Cola bottle 1915-2015

We remember the story of the Coca Cola bottle.   The famous contour shape was patented in 1915:
"The contour bottle has slim, elegant curves, and vertical grooves inspired by illustrations the industrial designers at the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Indiana, found in a reference book.
Since then, the bottle has helped make Coke a global behemoth; it’s helped make artists like Andy Warhol even more famous; and it’s helped establish American preeminence in industrial and consumer-product design.
British design critic Stephen Bayley put on the first exhibition of Coke-related art and design at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1986. He’s co-author of a glossy coffee-table book about the iconic brand and bottle.
“I grew up with Coke — for me, that was the taste of pleasure,” said Bayley. “Get access to Coke and you get access to that glorious American dream world.”
The 1915 bottle was invented in a contest Coke put on for glass-makers. The company wanted to distinguish its packaging from copycat cola-makers who were cutting into its business. Coke’s board issued this challenge, according to a history posted on the Coca-Cola company’s website, to develop: “a bottle so distinct that you would recognize if by feel in the dark or lying broken on the ground.”
Happy # 100 to an American classic.

When will they call him Romney with a ‘D’?

Image result for deval patrick cartoons
Another blue-state Democrat is in the race.  I guess that he will sound just like the others and blame President Trump for all of the problems in the world.
We are talking about Deval Patrick, the former governor of Massachusetts.
Patrick may find a hostile stage of fellow Democrats, specially when one of his previous employers comes into the conversation.
This is an example of what he may hear from Markos Moullitsas:
We knocked Romney for working at Bain Capital, Deval Patrick doesn’t get a pass for doing the same.
The “beef” against Bain Capital is that it represents “vulture capitalism,” another silly slogan promoted by the left.
Like others, Bain Capital dismantled companies in trouble and downsized their operations.  It usually created a leaner company by laying off people.
To be honest, I’d probably been angry at Bain Capital if my job had been downsized.  At the same time, it is realistic that laying off people can turn a company around.
So what happens to Patrick now?  He may create some excitement in the black community because of his close association to President Obama.
Unfortunately for Patrick, and Democrats, he is not going to propose anything new.  He has to sing to the choir, and this choir is way to the left.
So he’ll get a lot of publicity for now and fade quickly.
By the way, Bain Capital just removed Patrick from their website.

Electoral votes by congressional districts rather than states?

Related image

Let me start by saying that I like the Electoral College.  It forces candidates to pay attention to smaller states, such as New Hampshire or Wyoming.

Here is some food for thought.  What if we awarded EV's by congressional districts?   Here is the idea:

1) Give each canddiate 2 votes for winning state; and,
2) One vote for each congressional district.

Would election results have changed?  It'd be worth exploring.
