Elections and polls in Texas

Image result for texas vote images

What happened?
We learned on Tuesday that Senator Cruz is up 9 in the latest poll.  It shows Mr. Cruz at 44% with Hispanics, winning big with men and losing women to Mr. O’Rourke.
The early reaction is that Mr. O’Rourke’s NFL remarks and idiotic comments about AR-15s may finally be catching up with him.  On Friday, the two men will meet for a TV debate, and we will watch it.
Down in South Texas, the GOP flipped a state Senate seat held by Democrats for 139 years.  This is a rather remarkable story:
Republican Pete Flores defeated Democrat Pete Gallego on Tuesday night in the special election runoff for Senate District 19, a major upset in a Democratic-friendly seat with implications for the balance of power in the upper chamber.
With all precincts reporting, Flores beat Gallego by 6 percentage points in the race to replace convicted former state Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio.  Flores had 53 percent of the vote and Gallego 47 percent in unofficial returns.
Gallego conceded to Flores around 9 p.m., according to both campaigns.  With the victory, Flores will become the first Hispanic Republican to serve in the Texas Senate.
Naturally, the reporting of this election will be local.  I am not expecting most of the country to hear about it.  Nevertheless, Pete Flores has won a big victory.
First, these are strong blue districts, usually won by Texas Hispanic Democrats.  We should add that the special election was caused by the resignation of an incumbent with legal troubles.
Yes, I understand that it was a special election, but Flores won by 6 points.  It was not close!
Second, what happened to the blue wave and all of those Democrats who can’t wait to vote?  We didn’t see a blue wave here!
No matter what, it was a good Tuesday for the GOP in Texas.

No way any conservative should stay home in November

Once in a while, we hear some on our side say that voting does not matter.  Why vote Republican, they say?  What difference does it make?
Over the last two weeks, we saw in the U.S. Senate “exhibit A” of why the Democrats cannot be allowed to take over the Congress  Also, we watch Miss Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fumble and gibber while trying to explain how we are going to pay for universal health care.
Why vote Republican?  The answer is that the Democrats are out of their minds, to put it politely.
This is our “ghost of the future” moment.
I agree with Investors Business Daily:
Democrats are warning conservatives, and those who would appoint them, that they will do anything to derail their nominations. That includes flagrant attempts at character assassination — even if that requires throwing out unverifiable allegations from the distant past at the 11th hour.
At this point, the only real question that needs an answer is whether Republicans will reward Democrats for their craven attempts to scare highly qualified conservatives away from public service.
We had a view of the future last week and it includes Senator Cory Booker, Senator Kamala Harris, screamers yelling obscenities, and other forms of total madness.
Not totally happy with the GOP?  I am not thrilled either, but they are only thing standing between sanity and what we are watching in the U.S. Senate.

Let’s not forget about Keith Ellison

The latest episode of “Borking” makes me as sick as the first one in 1987.  Nevertheless, this is what Democrats do to win.
As the Kavanaugh episode unfolds, the story of Keith Ellison is largely unnoticed.  As you may remember, there are some allegations against him.  This is from a mid-August news report:
On Saturday night, the son of Ellison’s ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan wrote a lengthy Facebook post saying that he saw a video of Ellison grabbing his mother and swearing at her in a bedroom.
This is the second time Ellison has been publicly accused of domestic violence. Another woman, Amy Louise Alexander, spoke out in 2006, going public with her account that Ellison verbally abused her while they were having an affair. She also said he grabbed and pushed her during an argument. Ellison denied even having a relationship with her.
There are several similarities between the accounts: Both women were involved in Minnesota progressive politics, and they described Ellison losing his temper and using threats, verbal harassment, and violence.
But unlike other cases in the #MeToo era, where media outlets, in many cases, have asserted that women endured sexual harassment, assault, or other abusive behavior, the media has been much more ambivalent about asserting whether the claims are reliable.
Ellison is entitled to justice.  However, he is being accused by adults and there are witnesses on the record.  In the Kavanaugh case, we have an incident that happened in the early 1980s.
What happens now?  The GOP has to stick together and not allow Judge Kavanaugh to be destroyed like this.  As far as the mid-terms, the GOP voter will be furious if the party cracks at this critical moment.
