A ‘minimum wage’ that kills wages

economics
Perry Como once recorded a very popular song called “Seattle“. It went like this:
The bluest skies you’ve ever seen in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full of hopes and full of fears Full of laughter full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years in Seattle In Seattle
Nobody is talking about blue skies or green hills in Seattle these days. Instead, they are getting a very serious lesson in Economics 101, or what happens when you raise wages to pander for votes and end up hurting the people you were trying to help.
It goes like this:
As cities across the country pushed their minimum wages to untested heights in recent years, some economists began to ask: How high is too high?

Seattle, with its highest-in-the-country minimum wage, may have hit that limit.
In January 2016, Seattle’s minimum wage jumped from $11 an hour to $13 for large employers, the second big increase in less than a year.
New research released Monday by a team of economists at the University of Washington suggests the wage hike may have come at a significant cost:
The increase led to steep declines in employment for low-wage workers, and a drop in hours for those who kept their jobs.
Crucially, the negative impact of lost jobs and hours more than offset the benefits of higher wages — on average, low-wage workers earned $125 per month less because of the higher wage, a small but significant decline.
Why is anybody shocked? This is so obvious that it makes you wonder about the people who keep voting for these charlatans.
In the real world, reality always has the last word. You can not pay someone $13 an hour just because a city council member wants a talking point.   Wages are a by product of economic reality not political pandering. Politicians are no more qualified to tell employers what they must pay than to force them to provide health care they can’t afford.
As my old economics professor used to say: “the employer does not have to pay you what you want to get paid… he writes the check, you know.”
Indeed he does!  In Seattle, many employers have decided that they can’t write those checks anymore. So they have cut back employee hours or simply stopped hiring or closed the business.
Another great day for socialism but terrible for the workers!

Obama and what did he know about the Russians?

3-21-toons-1_custom-4f53e91e4aed32c9316c8dcdf94bee60e3648002-s900-c85

Over the last few days, we’ve learned that President Obama was aware of Russian meddling in our 2016 elections. The BBC has this story about it:
Mr Trump said Mr Obama had learned well before the 8 November poll about the accusations and “did nothing”.
His comments followed an article in the Washington Post which said that Mr Obama learned last August of President Vladimir Putin’s “direct involvement”.
The alleged meddling is the subject of high-level investigations in the US.
President Putin has repeatedly denied any Russian interference into the presidential election.
The Washington Post article says Mr Obama was told early last August by sources deep within the Russian government that Mr Putin was directly involved in a cyber campaign to disrupt the election, injure Hillary Clinton and aid a Trump victory.
The Post said Mr Obama secretly debated dozens of options to punish Russia but in the end settled on what it called symbolic measures — the expulsion of 35 diplomats and closure of two Russian compounds. They came in late December, well after the election.
So what do the Democrats do now? Was President Obama incompetent and negligent? How did he allow a foreign power to get away with messing with the integrity of our vote?
On the other hand, some Democrats seem aloof about the charges that the Obama administration was aware of Russian activities.
In other words, it was either bad or insignificant. The Democrats can not have it both ways.
President Trump is exactly right in calling out the Obama administration and Russia.
My guess is that there are a lot of Democrats who are wishing that they never played this Russia card. It looks like the whole thing is blowing up in their faces.
Yes, Mr. Mueller has a lot of probing to do. He should start by knocking on Mr. Obama’s door (he lives by The White House) and try to learn a thing or two about what Russia was up to.

Dissolve Illinois and federalize the Cubs

As we speak, Illinois is facing a self-inflicted financial crisis that may require some very drastic measures.
Who would have believed that Illinois may be on the verge of bankruptcy the year that Cubs’ fans are chanting repeat in 2017?
John Kass has a neat idea that should be listened to:
Dissolve Illinois.
Decommission the state, tear up the charter, whatever the legal mumbo-jumbo, just end the whole dang thing.

We just disappear. With no pain. That’s right. You heard me.
The best thing to do is to break Illinois into pieces right now. Just wipe us off the map. Cut us out of America’s heartland and let neighboring states carve us up and take the best chunks for themselves.
The group that will scream the loudest is the state’s political class, who did this to us, and the big bond creditors, who are whispering talk of bankruptcy and asset forfeiture to save their own skins.
Kass is frustrated, as must be everyone who lives between Cook County and the Missouri border.  They’ve seen their state soaked to death by politicians who just care about getting re-elected and promise what they can’t deliver.  Then they call you a racist or inhumane if you inquire how they plan to pay for it.
Beyond that, the Illinois way, not too different from the crony capitalism that we’ve written about in Brazil, has benefited the political class, the public-sector unions and the businesspeople who are shaken down to make campaign contributions.  The Illinois way is on the wrong side of history, to borrow the liberals’ favorite phrase.
So I understand Kass’s frustration.  He has a good idea.  Let’s break up Illinois and let the surrounding states pick up the pieces.
I would only add one amendment to the idea.  I hate the idea of the Milwaukee or Des Moines Cubs.  So let’s federalize the Cubs and turn them into a national treasure and keep them in Wrigley Field.  They can still be a private company but with the understanding that they belong to all of us.  We all need the Chicago Cubs, even if it means dissolving Illinois!
