The three messages that hit me from Trump’s acceptance speech

(My new American Thinker post)

The family feud is over and it's time to get behind the Trump/Pence ticket.  The alternative is Hillary Clinton and that is a problem.

In baseball terms, Trump hit this one out of the park, as The New York Post tells us:
The Republican nominee needed to not just act presidential, but be presidential — while still being himself.
He needed to keep every ounce of New York toughness and roughness he’d shown in the campaign to date, while also showing sensitivity and a sincere commitment to making life better for all Americans.
He needed to show a coherent policy vision recognizably his, that spoke to “his” voters, regular Republicans and all Americans.
And he did it in a speech characteristically Trump — wandering and emphatic, hard-hitting and a little chatty; blending policy and principle, anecdote and attack line, while speaking from the heart.
He touched me with 3 messages:

1) He will put America first.    Frankly, many of us have not felt that the incumbent has been doing that, from the Iran deal to sitting next to Raul Castro at a baseball game in Cuba.     Are we better off because we signed that agreement with Iran?   or put an embassy in Havana without demanding a single condition from the corrupt Castro brothers?   Has President Obama's quick departure from Iraq made us safer?   Did drawing a line in Syria and doing nothing about it earned us respect?    I say no to all!
2) He will fight for US workers not by promoting a higher minimum wage like the Democrats will say next week but by unleashing US industries, from energy to manufacturing.

3) He will project strength around the world, such as reminding some countries that we can't defend them if they don't live up to their side of the deal.   It's time to remind all concerned that NATO is an agreement between allies and not a one-way street paid for by US taxpayers.  We can't defend Europeans who won't defend themselves!

Will it work?   We will know in a few months but he is off to a good start.

One quick note for Mr. Trump:

Go to inner cities and ask a simple question:  How are you doing in the eighth year of our first African American president?

Go to Hispanic communities and ask:  What did you get for giving 70% of your vote to Democrats?

It will be very tough for Mrs. Clinton to bring this level of passion and energy to her convention.   Delivering a rousing message is not something Mrs. Clinton does well.

Mrs. Clinton will also have to balance her shift to the left with reality.   It won't be easy!

So far so good and Mr. Trump needs to keep it going.

Is there a Democrat willing to do a 'Cruz' next week?

(My new American Thinker post)

In the interest of full disclosure, I voted for Ted Cruz for the U.S. Senate in 2012.

I like him and he is a man of his word, as well as very ambitious.

In 2016, I started out hoping that the GOP would nominate one of our outstanding governors but voted for Marco Rubio in the Texas primary because of electability.

In 2016, I will vote for Donald Trump because Hillary Clinton is beyond unacceptable.

Speaking of Mr. Cruz's speech, I am surprised that the Trump campaign gave him a prime time slot knowing that no endorsement was forthcoming. In other words, that's what the early afternoon slots are for, when no one is watching on TV and the delegates are at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. What were they thinking at the Trump team?

Nevertheless, I admire Senator Cruz for being himself. It is refreshing, although I know a lot of people were angry.

Did Senator Cruz win or lose? We will have our answer the morning after the election.
Let's look at next week. Is there a Democrat with the courage to do what Senator Cruz did? Is there a member of that party willing to say this on a prime time slot:
Ladies and gentlemen, vote your conscience... vote for someone who tells the truth not one who's been lying about her emails for the last 12 months... vote for someone who has not been looking for money in places where women are discriminated or homosexuals are executed... vote for someone who walks the talk when it comes to Wall Street... do not vote for someone who supported a trade agreement in 2012 and then deletes it from a revision of her book "Hard choices"... and vote for someone who doesn't pander to everyone in the planet.
It would be nice if there was one honest person in the Democrat Party, or someone willing to put the country over the Clintons!

ISIS and the missing Gitmo guy targeting Rio Olympics for terror?

(My new American Thinker post)

Brazil has enough problems these days, from a lousy economy to a political crisis to zika and a "futbol" team that can't win anymore.

Let's add another one and this one (via Fausta's Blog) may be the most unpleasant of all:

A new Telegram channel, Ansar al-Khilafah Brazil, appeared today, declaring itself an ISIS cell in Brazil that had pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. “If French police couldn’t stop France attacks, then their training Brazil’s police will serve no use," said a message on the new channel. But the administrator later posted that it was just a messaging channel with one person reposting ISIS news in several languages.
ISIS has been offering its regular propaganda channel in Portuguese along with English, French, German, Russian and other languages in target areas.

We add the crazy story of the GITMO alumnus living in Uruguay who is suddenly missing.  It is believed that he crossed illegally into Brazil.  We don't believe that he went to Rio to learn how to "samba" or to tell Sergio Mendes that he loved his "Fool on the Hill" arrangement.

Let's safely assume that he is up to no good with thousands coming to Rio for the Olympics.  After all, he is a terrorist!

In the past, we may have overlooked these threats, but you can't anymore, after Nice, Orlando, San Bernardino and Paris.

Brazilian authorities assure us that there is no specific threat.   Frankly, I can understand that they may be trying to downplay it.    At the same time, the aforementioned article reminds us that French ISIS fighter Maxime Hauchard tweeted, "Brazil, you are our next target."

We know that ISIS loves soft targets.   What could be "softer" than thousands of people moving around a major city during an Olympic event?  It's scary!

So let's hope that the entire world has their eyes open because these threats have to be taken very seriously.
