We remember Rogers Hornsby (1896-1963). He was born in Winters, Texas and broke with the Cardinals in 1915. He died in 1963.
Hornsby was one of the greatest hitters in major league history: .358 career batting average, .434 on base pct, 301 HR, 1,584 RBI, and 2,930 hits in 2,259 games.
He is second to Ty Cobb on career batting average, .358 to Cobb's .367!
Hornsby won 3 triple crowns and hit over .400 three times, including .424 in 1924. No one has come close to that except for Williams (,406) in 1941.
He is also the only player to hit 40 HR and hit .400 in the same season: .401, 42 HR & 152 RBI in 1922. He almost did it again in 1925: .403, 39 HR & 143 RBI.
Great career. Great player:
