Let me tell you up front: Sly & The Family Stone's "Thank you" was one of my favorite songs of the 1970's. My joy was complete when I learned that Sly Stone was born in Texas, where I am.

Well, the song title is what we used to call black street slang about growing up black in the inner city.

The Harris campaign is having a problem with drawing votes from black men. So they sent former President Obama to the rescue.

Here it goes:

Former President Barack Obama on Thursday admonished Black men who he believes have not adequately supported Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, telling them it’s “not acceptable” to sit out this election and suggesting they might be reluctant to vote for Harris because she’s a woman.

The striking comments by Obama, made to a small group of voters in a surprise stop at a local Harris campaign office in Pittsburgh, were part of a more forceful campaign message delivered by the former president on Thursday as polls continue to show a neck-and-neck race. At a rally in the city later that evening, Obama issued some of his most searing public criticisms of his successor to date.

The lack of energy some see around Harris’ campaign, Obama told the group, “seems to be more pronounced with the brothers.”

“You’re thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody (in former president Donald Trump) who has a history of denigrating you, because you think that’s a sign of strength, because that’s what being a man is? Putting women down?” Obama said. “That’s not acceptable.”

The problem, he suggested, was less complicated than some are making it out to be – and that it often comes down to sexism.

There you have it.  The millionaire brother who sent his daughters to an expensive D.C. private school, owner of a couple mansions in lily-white neighborhoods who hangs around with white liberals is now preaching to the "brothers" to step up and vote black.

Thank you, Obama, for being yourself again.

I'm not sure that it's getting through because the brothers remember that you did nothing for them.  You left town and left the brothers to live in crime-filled neighborhoods, lousy public schools, and zero hope or change.

Funky Obama no more, the brothers are saying. The brothers in Philadelphia can’t relate to the Nantucket mansion or the woman who grew up in Montreal.

We remember Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007)

We remember the great Pavarotti who was born in Modena, Italy, on this day in 1935.

Time flies but we still remember Luciano Pavarotti's passing.   He was 71 when he died in 2007.

Pavarotti was quite a character and tenor. We miss him!

1997: Hard to believe that John Denver was killed so many years ago

It's hard to believe but John Denver was killed in a plane crash on this day in 1997.

Where has the time gone?

John Denver came up as a folk singer and composer.

His big chance came in 1969 when Peter Paul & Mary recorded "Leaving on a jet plane".       Denver
jumped on the opportunity and released a string hits of the 1970's, such as “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Back Home Again,” “Thank God I’m A Country Boy,” and “Calypso”.

His unique sound created a following on Top 40, country and folk radio stations.

Denver faded a bit in the 1980's although his concerts still attracted huge crowds.   He always had a huge following because his songs are timeless.

October 2010: The Rangers finally won a post-season series

October 2010 and the Rangers beat the Rays in Tampa.

Cliff Lee's complete game, aggressive base running and Ian Kinsler's  home run ended many years of frustration in North Texas.

The Rangers finally won a post season series. (They lost 3 times to the Yankees in the late 1990's).

Columbus Day and the story of “El Indio Hatuey”!

Another year and more reasons to remember Columbus, or "Colon" as we say in Spanish.

One of those reasons is that he set foot on Cuba 2 weeks later or October 28.

Columbus and his crew moved on to Florida or the future US state.  He eventually headed back to Spain in January 1493.

Columbus was looking for a new route to India, found Cuba by accident and subsequently made "El indio Hatuey" a historical icon!

As you may remember, Hatuey fought the Spanish and was burned to death.

"Hatuey" also became the face of one of Cuba's favorite drinks, or "Malta Hatuey".

Think about this story the next time you are having a "malta" with a Cuban sandwich or some of those "croquetas".
