Why are unaccompanied children showing up at the US-Mexico border?

According to news reports, we are finding unaccompanied children on the US-Mexico border:

"A recent Associated Press article on the surge reported that 1,390 unaccompanied children crossed over the border and into U.S. custody in March alone.

Some have even been housed at Lackland Air Force Base on a temporary basis while they are being processed.

The children, after being initially detained by the Department of Homeland Security, are typically handed over to the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement -- a division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

What's going on?

What are unaccompanied kids showing up on the US-Mexico border?  Here is more on the story from The WSJ:

"From October to the end of April, the US government has detained more than 6,500 unaccompanied minors who had crossed the border, nearly double the number detained in the comparable period the previous year, according to US officials.
Most of them come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, countries that are close to Mexico's southern border, and generally range in age from 14 to 17, though some are younger."

Who is taking these children to the border?  I don't think that children are just walking to the border and crossing into the US.

Again, who is delivering these children to the US-Mexico border?

Let's start by asking Pres Calderon.  Again, is Pres Calderon aware that children are showing up on the border?

Children are children and can not be blamed for illegal immigration or the incredibly irresponsible behavior of the adults who put them there.   Furthermore, we are not going to let children die on the border.

We demand some accountability for the fact that Mexican and Central American children are showing up on the border.

We ask again:  Who is driving these kids to the border?  I guarantee that they are not getting there by themselves.  We should hold Pres Calderon and the Mexican government responsible for these children.

We discussed this issue with Dr Ileana Johnson-Paugh on the Friday show:
