1982: Aaron & Robinson Hall of Fame

On August 1, 1982, Frank Robinson and Hank Aaron went into The Hall of Fame.  They were two of the greatest players of the post-war era.  

Robinson and Aaron broke into the majors in the 1950's.    

Robinson finished his career with a .294 average, 586 HR and 1,812 RBI.    He won the 1961 NL MVP and 1966 AL MVP.   He played in 5 World Series, 1 with the Reds and 4 with the Orioles.    

Aaron left the game with a .305 batting average, 755 HR, 2,297 RBI & 3,771 hits.   He was the 1957 NL MVP or the same year that the Braves won the World Series.

1956: Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier got married

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier had a fairy tale wedding on this day in 1956.    

They met during the making of "To catch a thief" and fell in love shortly after.   The very elegant Grace went from movie star to Princess Grace of Monaco.   The couple had 3 children.

Sadly, Princess Grace died after a car accident in 1982.    She made a lot of films and I always catch "To catch a thief", a fun movie.

John Wayne and "El Dorado"

It's time to watch another John Wayne movie.    

"El Dorado" is from 1966 and it includes Robert Mitchum and James Caan.   In this movie, Wayne plays a gunfighter who gets in the middle of a fight over water.

It is a good movie.   Wayne is "Cowboy # 1" in my book.

We remember Robert E Lee (1807-70)

We remember Robert E. Lee who was born on this day in 1807.   He died in 1870, or a few years after The Civil War.

Lee was a distinguished military man and West Point graduate. He was a man of great character and accomplishment.   

In 1865, General Lee surrendered because he understood that his side had lost and wanted to avoid more bloodshed.

1982: "The catch" that broke lots of Cowboys' hearts!

It happened one Sunday afternoon in January 1982 or the drive that set up "The catch" that put San Francisco in The Super Bowl.   The final score was 27-26.

It may have been the end of the line for those Cowboys' teams of the 1970's. The Cowboys played in one more NFC championship game under Landry in 1983.  They lost to Washington and that was pretty much the end of Landry's post season teams.

Dallas did not play in another NFC title until they met the same SF in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

1982: Montana to Clark and "the catch" that broke so many Cowboys' hearts!

It happened on this day in 1982 and it is still one of the biggest plays in NFL history.   

Yes, "the catch" broke many Cowboys' hearts but it was an amazing play.

The 49ers were driving to score.   They started at their own 11 and down 27-21.  Montana drove the team down to the Dallas' 6 yard line.   It was 3rd and 3 and SF had to score because a field goal would not have not a difference, i.e. Dallas would run out of the clock.

Montana moved to the right, threw the ball in the end zone and Clark jumped and made the catch.    

And they've called it "the catch" ever since!
