Once upon a time, there was a Democrat from Minnesota named Hubert H. Humphrey

He was vice president under Lyndon Baines Johnson, ran for president in '68, had a wonderful wife named Muriel, and they even named a stadium after him.  Humphrey was one of those pre-Obama Democrats or the kind of guys you could have dinner with without hearing all night that Trump is a threat to democracy.

We miss Minnesota Democrats like Humphrey, especially after watching Gov. Tim Walz debate Sen. J.D. Vance.  You've come a long way, Minnesota, and it's not good.

As Joe Concha wrote, Mr. Walz is a fraud and a lightweight:

If Donald Trump wins this election, the postmortems on Kamala Harris’ campaign should put her choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate at the top of her list of mistakes.

Much of America got to know Walz for the first time during Tuesday’s vice-presidential debate.

Unlike his appearance at the Democratic National Convention, the Walz we saw on the debate stage didn’t have his words written for him in a teleprompter.

And the unfiltered version underscored a very obvious fact about the governor: He is patently fake.

A fake indeed.  Worse than that -- a fake who is bad at faking.  He can't even call himself a knucklehead without looking like an idiot.  He even had to clarify what he meant by having friends who are school shooters.  His explanation of visiting China left us more confused than ever.  I guess that his next tongue-twister is explaining all of those military service videos.

My guess is that the Harris camp watched the debate wondering if Democrat Gov. Josh Shapiro from Pennsylvania who supports fracking and school choice is still available.

In the meantime, men watched that debate and concluded quickly that J.D. was a better husband for their daughter than Tim.  Women watched the debate and hope that no man like Tim asks to dance the next time she goes dancing.  No gender gap that Tim is a fake.

October 1962: The Beatles and their first recording in the UK!

-----------
Over in the UK, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and new drummer Ringo Starr released their first 45 rpm single.

According to news reports, The Beatles recorded the song in the summer.   It was followed by Brian Epstein's aggressive marketing campaign in Liverpool.    He promoted the 45 at his store and the group's local fans.

It got to #17 in the UK.....not bad for a group's first recording!  Two years later, it hit # 1 in the US when it was released as part of The Beatles' pop chart avalanche of 1964.

The B-side was "P.S. I love you", a much better tune in my opinion.    I'm really surprised that they didn't promote this one rather than "Love me do".     It is clearly a much better song!

The songs were included in The Beatles' first UK album.   They were subsequently released in the 1964 US "The Early Beatles" album!

This is a nice book.  I got it from my brother a few years ago.  It makes a great gift for any Beatles' fan:

We remember Vaclac Havel (1936-2011)

We remember Vaclav Havel who was born in Prague on this day in 1936.  He died in 2011 and left an incredible legacy.

This is a bit from The New York Sun:

"The long, twilight struggle against the communist tyranny at Czechoslovakia and the rest of Eastern Europe and at the Soviet Union had many heroes, on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Yet it is hard to think of any more unifying, dignified, cheerful, enduring, or consequential than the playwright turned president, who turned a protest against the suppression of a rock band into a movement that inspired and changed the world."

Some of us take political debate and dissent for granted.  We assume that everyone in the world has that right or opportunity.

Havel is one of those men who risked everything to express his thoughts or to write his opinions.  We are grateful that men like Havel come around and remind us that freedom is worth standing up for.

We spoke about Havel with Jorge Ponce a few years ago.

1966: Moe Drabowsky's 6 innings of relief in game 1 of the World Series

---------
The underdog Orioles got off to a great start in the top of the first inning of the 1966 World Series.

Eventual MVP and Triple Crown winner Frank Robinson hit a 2-run HR and Brooks Robinson followed it with a solo shot.    It was suddenly 3-0 Baltimore!

Dave McNally could not get out of the 3rd inning but Moe Drabowsky pitched 6-plus innings of relief to preserve the win.

Final score: Orioles 5, Dodgers 2.    The Dodgers did not score again in the series.

1955: Dodgers won the World Series

The Brooklyn Dodgers finally beat the
Yankees in 1955 after losing to them in 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1953.    Of course, those were the days when only 2 teams advanced to the post season.

I love reading everything about these Dodgers.  The Dodgers had a relationship with the fans of Brooklyn that no other team in baseball ever had, or perhaps never will.  The borough literally lived and died with their team.

October 5, 1953: Billy Martin and Yankees won their 5th title in a row

Yogi Berra died a few years ago.  He was one of the Yankees on that team that won their 5th series in a row in 1953.

Game 7 was tied going in to the bottom of the ninth and Billy Martin drove in the winning run for title # 5.

By the way, Phil Rizzuto, another one of the 12 who played in all 5 titles, wrote a wonderful book about the legendary teams.

The 1998-2000 Yankees won 3 in a row and so did the 1972-74 Oakland A's.  No one has come close to winning 5 since!
