1918: Romanov family executed

Russian history is romantic, dramatic, violent and full of good stories.

On this day in 1918, Russian history turned violent and brutal.

On July 16, Nicholas, Alexandra, their five children and four servants were ordered to dress and go down to the cellar of the house for a photograph.   A few moments later, armed men gunned down the imperial family.

By the way, there was a great movie called "Nicholas and Alexandria" about the Czar and his family.

Like some of you, I was introduced to Joe Jackson in the movie "Eight men out".

Joseph Jefferson Jackson was born in South Carolina on July 16, 1888.    He broke with the old Philadelphia A's in 1910.

Overall, Jackson hit .356 with a .423 on base average.    He left the game with 1772 hits in 1332 games, or an amazing 1.33 hits per game!

We remember "Shoeless Joe" for the White Sox scandal, or the year that Chicago allegedly threw the Series against Cincinatti.

A sad ending.   He could have been one of the greatest hitters of all time!

July 16, 2003: Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa died

We remember the life and times Celia Cruz, the great Cuban singer known as "La reina de la salsa".

She started in Cuban radio, then became the lead singer for La Sonora Matancera, the greatest Cuban orchestra of the 1940s and 1950s.  In the 1970s, Celia went global and her tours were sold out everywhere.

She died July 16, 2003.

Celia's music touched all of us Cubans in the US.
