A word about January 21

We say happy birthday to Placido Domingo born on this day in Madrid, Spain, in 1941.  Domingo made his US debut in Dallas in 1961.     I did not know that.       He’s been performing for 50 plus years:  over 3,800 performances of 147 roles plus many audio and video recordings and films.

Let’s remember Super Bowl 13 or Dallas vs Pittsburgh or Roger Staubach vs. Terry Bradshaw or Coach Landry vs Coach Knoll.  It turned out to be the last post-season game played in the 1970’s between the best two teams of the decade.

MEET THE BEATLES was released on this day in 1964……or many years ago today. The album is a combination of the first two UK albums plus “I want to hold your hand”, the big single released in the US.  It was not their best album in retrospect but it was exactly the kind of debut that the group needed.

A Trump-Zeldin ticket?

Now that president Trump is consolidating his race for the GOP nomination, how about a suggestion for Trump's vice president?      Let me recommend Lee Zeldin, former congressman and the 2022 GOP candidate for governor….

It's hard to pick a favorite.    I love "Siempre en mi corazon", his 1983 LP of Ernesto Lecuona songs.    It'd make a great gift for Valentine's Day.

1914: Austria's Archduke Ferdinand assassinated

Back in 1914
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were shot to death by a Bosnian Serb nationalist during an official visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.

On August 1, 1914, World War I began to take shape:
".....four days after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, two more great European powers—Russia and Germany—declare war on each other; the same day, France orders a general mobilization.
The so-called “Great War” that ensued would be one of unprecedented destruction and loss of life, resulting in the deaths of some 20 million soldiers and civilians and the physical devastation of much of the European continent."
We started this series with Barry Jacobsen in 2014, or the 100th anniversary of World War I.
