Joe discovers that the other Joe is a liberal: Just saw some interesting remarks from retiring Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.  He sure sounds like a candidate to me.  As they say if it looks like a candidate, talks like a candidate, then it probably is a candidate.

A word about January 31

On this day in 1865, the US House passed the 13th Amendment.  It was sent to the states for ratification and approved in November.
President Lincoln just gets better with age. He was the right man at the most critical moment in US history.    A few years ago, a great movie came out about his efforts to pass the 13th amendment that abolished slavery.   It was a great movie!

Happy # 77 to the great Nolan Ryan who was born on this day in 1947 in Refugio, Texas.  His numbers are unbelievable:   324 wins, 3.19 ERA, 5,714 K and 7 no-hitters.     Ryan was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999.

The great Ernie Banks was born in Dallas, Texas, on this day in 1931.     He died in 2014.  Over the years, I've seen some great players in person and TV.  Sadly, I never got to see Ernie Banks in person but do recall hearing #500 on WGN radio.

We remember Jackie Robinson, who was born in Cairo, Georgia, on this day in 1919.     He died October 24, 1972.

We say happy birthday to Davey Johnson, who was born on this day in Orlando, Florida in 1943.

We remember Johnson as a great second baseman and then as a manager.

As a player, he hit .261 with 136 HR & 609 RBI over 1,435 games.    He played in 4 World Series with Baltimore and won several Gold Gloves.

As a manager, he won 1,372 games with an excellent .562 winning pct.    He led the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title.   Johnson also won division titles with Baltimore in 1997 and Washington in 2012.

Great player & manager.

Happy # 74 Barbi Benton

Barbi Benton.  She was born Barbara Lynn Klein in New York City on this day in 1950.

Back in the 1970's, Barbi burst on the scene on Playboy magazine.  Later, she became a regular on TV's hilarious "Hee Haw" and also recorded some country music albums.

As I understand, Barbi retired in the 1980's and became a full time mother.

Happy # 77 John Lowenstein

We say happy birthday to John Lowenstein who was born in Montana on this day in 1947.

John was one of the most popular players in the Orioles teams that played in the 1979 and 1983 World Series.   He was not a superstar, like Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer or Cal Ripken, but he was a huge factor in the Orioles' winning ways.

John came to Baltimore just before the 1979 season and platooned in left field with Gary Roenicke.   His numbers were great, specially in 1982 when he hit .320 with 24 HR and 66 RBI in 122 games.   In 1983, or the year that Baltimore won the World Series, John hit .291 with 15 HR.

In the post season, John hit .308 in 10 games.   He also hit the 3-run homer to beat the Angels in extra innings of game 1 of the 1979 ALCS.

He was a real fan favorite.   I hope that he's doing well.   Thanks for the memories!

Happy # 89 Bob Uecker

Image result for bob uecker imagesWe remember Bob Uecker who was born in Milwaukee on this day in 1935.

Once upon a time, Bob Uecker played baseball.   My guess is that most of us remember him as the radio voice of the Milwaukee Brewers and one of those funny baseball movies.

As a major league catcher (1962-67),  Uecker hit .200 in 297 games (217 starts), 146 hits, 14 HR and 74 RBI.  He played with Milwaukee and then backed Tim McCarver in the 1964 World Series.

In 1971, he came home to be the radio & TV voice of the Brewers.

A word about January 25

We remember Don Maynard who was born in Texas on this day in 1935 and passed away January 2022.     Maynard played with the Jets who won Super Bowl III.   We remember him for a clutch catch in the AFL championship against the Raiders.  It was that TD that put the Jets in the Super Bowl against the Colts.

Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1938.   We know her as Etta James, one of the most unique voices of pop music.     Her career started with gospel music and she eventually recorded in Chicago.     She was the opening act with The Rolling Stones for a time in the 1980's and sang in the opening ceremonies of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics.    Etta won 2 Grammys for her work.

Who saw the movie "Saturday Night Fever" many years ago?  Maybe you danced to "More than a woman" and some of the other songs by The Bee Gees.  On this day in 1978, the soundtrack LP moved to # 1 on Billboard USA.  It stayed at # 1 for a long time!

We remember Wally Bunker who was born in Seattle on this day in 1945.   Bunker had a great start with the Orioles.   He went 19-5 with the 1964 Orioles.    Bunker was one of the many young arms along with Dave McNally and Jim Palmer.  In 1966, Wally pitched a 1-0 victory in game 3 of the 1966 World Series.   It put the O's up 3-0 in that Series against LA.   He ended up with the expansion KC Royals after the 1968 draft.     Actually, he pitched well in KC, won 12 games and threw the first pitch in the expansion team's history.   Bunker retired after after the 1971 season.

Gitmo still there

It was 15 years ago that President Obama signed an executive order to close Gitmo and keep a campaign promise.  Closing Gitmo was supposed to restore our place in the halls of freedom and due process; or so we heard during the campaign of “hope and change.”

Well, where are we now?   Many of the bad guys are still in Gitmo and you don’t hear much from the former president about it.

A word about January 24

We remember Winston Churchill who passed away on this day in 1965.    He was 90.  Churchill was one of the great leaders of the 20th century and UK Prime Minister 1940-1945 and 1951-55.    Churchill was also a great author and won The Nobel Prize in Literature for his six-volume books of World War II and for political speeches.

Sharon Tate was born in Dallas, Texas, on this day in 1943.   Sharon was killed by Charles Manson in 1969.   It was an awful story because Sharon was pregnant and apparently alone in a ranch.   Sharon Tate was in various films, such as "Valley of the Dolls" in 1967.

We remember John Belushi, one of the original members of Saturday Night Live.   Belushi was born in Chicago on this day in 1949.    He died in 1982.  Wow!  Lots of memories of those shows!

Willie Mays was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame on this day in 1979.    Mays played 21 seasons with the Giants, and finished up with the Mets in 1972-73.    He hit over .300 10 times and retired with a career .302 average, won the NL MVP twice (1954 & 1965) and was selected 20 times as an NL All-Star.  On top of that, Mays led the league in home runs four times and hit 660, or the second highest ever at the time he retired.

Some of us are old enough to remember watching Mays in the NBC Saturday afternoon game of the week.  Finally, I had a chance to watch Mays in 1972 when he finished his career with the New York Mets.   He wasn't Willie Mays anymore but it was a huge thrill to see him in person!

For my money, Mays was the greatest player of the 20th century!

A word about January 22

We recall today another anniversary of Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the U.S.  Thankfully, it was overturned in 2022.  The states (i.e. voters) decide abortion now and that’s a good thing.

We remember LBJ, or President Lyndon Johnson, the 36th president of the U.S., who died on this day in 1973.  He was living in South Texas and watching his successor announce the end of the Vietnam War:

On the day of Nixon's second inaugural celebration, Johnson watched sullenly as Nixon announced the dismantling of many of Johnson's Great Society social programs and, the next day, that he had achieved the ceasefire in Vietnam that had eluded Johnson.

The following day, while Lady Bird and their daughters were in Austin, Johnson suffered a fatal heart attack at his ranch in Johnson City.
