Happy # 93 Al Worthington

We remember Al Worthington who was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on this day in 1929.

Before every team had a "closer"and bullpen specialists, Al Worthington did it with the Twins.

From 1964 to 1969, he saved 88 games with a 2.62 ERA for the Twins, a team that finished 1 game behind the Yankees in 1964, won the 1965 AL pennant, came in second to Baltimore in 1966, was eliminated in the last game of the 1967 season and won the AL West in 1969.    The Twins were a great AL team and Worthington coming out of the bullpen had a lot to do with it.

Worthington led the AL in saves with 18 in 1968.

Great bullpen guy!

In 1973, Al became the baseball coach at Lynchburg Baptist College (now Liberty University) in Lynchburg, Virginia.     He retired December 1989.
