What would I do? Make me "Baseball King" for a day.
1) No more designated hitter in baseball. I liked the DH because it kept Tony Oliva and Al Kaline around for a few years.
In fact, Kaline got his 3,000th hit in 1974 or the second year of the DH. Would he have reached 3,000 hits without the DH? I don't know.
The American League does not need an extra hitter in the lineup today! There are plenty of hits and home runs. The DH came into existence to add runs. Do we have a shortage of runs or do we have 4-hour games because of all the scoring?
2) Raise the pitchers' mound to 1968 levels. In 2009, a study supported the idea that the old one reduced pitchers' injuries. It's worth a try because of the money invested in these pitchers.
3) Reduce the baseball season to 154 games. Start the post season on the last Tuesday of September so that the 7th game of the World Series is played around Oct 20th rather than the 27th.
4) Start weekday World Series games at 7 pm Eastern Time rather than 8:30 pm. It will mean that more youngsters will get to watch the games on TV.
5) Move the Oakland A's to San Antonio so that there are 3 AL West teams in Texas. It will create a lot of excitement and attendance in San Antonio will be better than in Oakland.
6) Move the Tampa Rays to Montreal. It will create a wonderful AL East rivalry in Canada. Can you imagine the passion when the Jays and the Expos play each other 19 times?
Well, that's just a few ideas.
