ESPN: No runs, no hits, tons of errors

116adae3a3f0a72872d7f49fbb68d7cd

ESPN is going through a rough time, from layoffs to a sense that the network has gone a bit lefty in its political orientation.
So what do you do when your network is accused of pandering to the left?  I guess you go out and feature a poem written by a convicted cop-killer hiding in Cuba.
According to news reports:
An ESPN site targeting female sports fans on Thursday removed a poem paying homage to a convicted cop killer after “an oversight in the editorial process” led to the poem being published several days ago, the embattled sports giant told Fox News.
DaMaris Hill’s poem “Revolution” had led the April 25 ESPNW.com feature “Five Poets on the New Feminism,” which was produced “in honor of National Poetry month…to reflect on resistance, redefining feminism and movement,” according to a site description. But Hill’s poem opened with the dedication “(for Assata Shakur),” honoring the one-time Black Liberation Army member who has been hiding out in Cuba to avoid finishing a prison term for her murder rap.

“There was an oversight in the editorial process for selecting the poems for the ‘Five Poets on the New Feminism’ feature on espnW,” a spokesperson told Fox News in an email. “Dr. DaMaris Hill is a respected professor and poet, who submitted this poem based upon her personal feelings toward Assata Shakur. While the editors welcomed a contribution from a notable writer and chose it as a reflection of this one poet’s experience, upon further review we have decided it is not an appropriate selection for our site and have removed the piece from the feature.”
Later Thursday, the title of the feature had been changed to “Four Poets on the New Feminism,” Hill’s poem was gone and an editor’s note at the bottom of the page informed readers of the changes.
An oversight in the editorial process?
Seriously, are people that out of touch with reality at ESPN?  All they had to do was google Joanne Chesimard’s name prior to the publication.  They would have learned that Chesimard was convicted of fatally shooting a New Jersey state trooper in 1973, escaped from prison, and fled to Cuba in the 1980s.  Last, but not least, she is on the list of the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists.
Again, are these people at ESPN that tone-deaf?
Yesterday, I read of massive downsizing going on at ESPN.  They lost 12 million subscribers over five years!  We are not happy to see people lose their jobs.  At the same time, it’s not very smart to feature a poem from a woman convicted of killing a state trooper.
I wonder if anyone at ESPN is planning to apologize to the state trooper’s family.  In the meantime, the errors keep mounting at the big E!

It’s about the rule of law, not immigration

9t46qogac
Our legislature in Texas took a big step forward in reminding everyone that it’s about the rule of law not immigration.
It went down along party lines:
After more than 16 hours of debate, the Texas House of Representatives early Thursday morning tentatively gave a nod to the latest version of a Senate bill that would ban “sanctuary” jurisdictions in Texas.
The 93-54 vote fell along party lines and came after one of the slowest moving but most emotional legislative days at the state Capitol.
The vote came at 3 a.m. after state Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, successfully made what some Democratic members called an unprecedented motion to group all of the remaining amendments — more than 100 — and record them as failed. He said he made that suggestion so members wouldn’t be forced to pull their amendments. The motion passed 114 to 29, with about a third of Democrats approving the measure.

It’s a shame that an issue about enforcing the law should go down along partisan lines but that’s reality.
Nevertheless, the Democrats are completely tone deaf on this issue.
They have invested themselves in “the sanctuary city” movement. It is a huge political mistake, as we saw recently in a Pew Poll:
An overwhelming majority of Americans believe that cities that arrest illegal immigrants for crimes should be required to turn them over to federal authorities.
The poll shows that President Trump has broad public support in his effort to crack down on sanctuary cities.
A survey from Harvard–Harris Poll provided exclusively to The Hill found that 80 percent of voters say local authorities should have to comply with the law by reporting to federal agents the illegal immigrants they come into contact with.
That 80% means that there are a lot of Democrats joining in.
Since election night, the Democrat Party has gone mad.
First, they spent all of their ammunition fighting Neil Gorsuch and lost the 60-vote option in the U.S. Senate.
Second, they’ve now joined cities violating federal law.
Madness, madness, madness!
Did any Democrat hear the one about when to stop digging?

How about renegotiating NAFTA as a treaty this time?

On Wednesday night, I had a chat with a good friend and Mexican businessman by phone. He was curious about President Trump and rumors that the U.S. would pull out of NAFTA.
Apparently, the Mexican peso had a bad day with the rumors of a U.S. cancellation. It’s amazing how many media outlets in Mexico overreact to everything that hits the internet about President Trump!
Later, we learned that President Trump has decided to negotiate rather than terminate, as we heard in news reports.
As I explained to my friend in a subsequent call, I support negotiations because it makes sense after 24 years. It is important for all three nations to put their cards on the table and move on or terminate the agreement. Also, a renegotiation may actually show that the original NAFTA worked out rather well for all.
Opposition to NAFTA is huge in Mexico, especially in the agricultural sector. I’ve heard from many Mexicans who despise the way that the agreement was approved in Mexico. And they will tell you that pre-NAFTA GDP growth was stronger, although I am not sure that you can blame all of that on NAFTA. I worked in Mexico in the 1980s, before NAFTA, and there were many protected industries. In other words, it’s easy to have growth when government policies curtail competition. Nevertheless, it’s fair to say that Mexico should take a look at NAFTA because it was sold as the key to general prosperity and it has not really worked out that way!

As a supporter, let me say that we made a huge mistake with NAFTA. It should have been submitted to the U.S. Senate as a treaty. It also passed primarily on a party basis in the House (234-200) with the GOP generally supporting it and most Democrats opposing it:
The strongest support in the House came from Republicans, who cast 132 votes for the trade plan and 43 against it.
Among Democrats, 102 voted for the agreement and 156 opposed it. The one independent in Congress voted against the plan.
The Senate vote was 73-26 in favor. Why didn’t we go with the treaty route with 73 votes in favor?
Consequently, we did not get the best deal in 1993. Instead, we got an agreement where a president could call for withdrawal or negotiation. Senator Obama did in 2008 and it was a big part of Mr. Trump’s message in 2016.
A treaty discussion would have recognized the benefits of a North American economic union but it would have slowed up the movement of manufacturing jobs south of the border. Also, a treaty could have included border safety and control of illegal immigration as part of a broad compromise.
So let’s renegotiate NAFTA and do it right this time, as a treaty as the Constitution calls for.

Gorsuch makes it one heck of a 100 days!

Can we finally put this stupid “100 day” marker to rest? It is stupid, silly and tells you nothing about the presidency. In other words, we elect a president for a full term and the first 100 days tells you nothing about what we will think of him a year from now or even 2020 when it’s time for reelection.
Let’s remember President Bush 43’s 100 days. His presidency changed on 9/11. What about President Obama? He was walking on water in April 2009 and then took over 1,000 Democrats over the political cliff.
Of course, the media is running hard to make everything about Trump a failure, as Marc Thiessen reminded us:
Despite the best efforts of the White House “PR apparatus” to sell the president’s first 100 days as a success, the New York Times declared in an editorial, the new administration has, in fact, been plagued by “many missteps” including a “bungled sales job” on his first major legislative initiative and a “snakebit” confirmation process, all of which have produced “a flurry of articles bemoaning the lack of focus in the White House.” The first 100 days, the Times declared, is a period the president “might prefer to forget.”
The president in question is not Donald Trump. This is how, in April 1993, the Times described the first 100 days of Bill Clinton’s presidency. But not to worry, the Times reassured its readers: “It’s still early, and a hundred days don’t really mean very much.”

The Times is right: The first 100 days really don’t mean very much at all.
Nevertheless, President Trump did have a major success story in the first 100 days, or the nomination and eventual selection of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. It was great and makes the 100 days a smashing success.
The media, and the curse of 24-7 news, is the culprit here. We are living in a period where every minute is treated as the most consequential turn in history. It is stupid.
My guess is that we will look back at Trump’s first term rather well. It will include one, or maybe a second Supreme Court Justice, tax reform, a health care reform package, a more confident economy, and a foreign policy crisis handled from a position of strength. It will be enough to reelect President Trump. Then we can begin talking about the first 100 days of his second term.

"El Chapo Act", a brilliant idea from Senator Ted Cruz

Let’s say “thumb up” to Senator Cruz of Texas.  He wants “El Chapo” to pay for the wall:
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today introduced the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (EL CHAPO) Act.
The bill would reserve any amounts forfeited to the U.S. Government as a result of the criminal prosecution of “El Chapo” (formally named Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Lorea) and other drug lords for border security assets and the completion of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The U.S. Government is currently seeking the criminal forfeiture of more than $14 billion in drug proceeds and illicit profits from El Chapo, the former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel who was recently extradited to the U.S. to face criminal prosecution for numerous alleged drug-related crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.
“Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,” said Sen. Cruz. “Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is one of my top priorities.
We must also be mindful of the impact on the federal budget. By leveraging any criminally forfeited assets of El Chapo and his ilk, we can offset the wall’s cost and make meaningful progress toward achieving President Trump’s stated border security objectives.”
El Chapo is not the only one. There are other assets out there that could be seized and applied to the construction of the wall, as our friend Fausta reported:
One cooperator, Juan Carlos Ramirez-Abadia, or “Chupeta,” 54, was a leading supplier of cocaine to Sinaloa and BLO through Colombia’s Norte del Valle cartel. He directed the production of business ledgers and was also prosecuted by Goldbarg. DEA agents helped obtain “the forfeiture of hundreds of millions of dollars” of Ramirez-Abadia’s purported billion-dollar fortune, U.S. authorities said when he was extradited in 2008 and remains under U.S. indictment…
Mayo’s son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, 41, agreed not to contest the forfeiture of nearly $1.4 billion — including cash, real estate, businesses, vehicles and other property — and cooperate with U.S. authorities while pending sentencing of 10 years to life in prison, a federal plea deal made public in 2014 in Chicago showed.
And then there are his relatives, who are living high off the hog.
Back in 2012 the U.S. Treasury Department put financial sanctions on El Chapo’s wife and son.
What are we waiting for? Let’s get started. Who would oppose having “narcos” pay for the wall?

tomanddonkey
We understand that he later dialed it back a bit. Nevertheless, DNC Chairman Tom Perez sent shock waves through the electorate over the weekend. This is what he said:
Tom Perez became the first head of the party to demand ideological purity on abortion rights, promising Friday to support only Democratic candidates who back a woman’s right to choose.
“Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” Perez said in a statement. “That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state.”
“At a time when women’s rights are under assault from the White House, the Republican Congress, and in states across the country,” he added, “we must speak up for this principle as loudly as ever and with one voice.”
Perez’s statement follows the DNC’s controversial embrace of Heath Mello, a Democratic mayoral candidate in Omaha, Nebraska, whose years-long history of voting against abortion rights in the state Legislature drew fire from progressives this week. Daily Kos, a liberal website that raises money for lesser-known Democratic candidates, pulled its endorsement of Mello this week after discovering his history on the issue, and NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue slammed the DNC for adding him to its cross-country unity tour.

So what do you do if you are pro-life Democrat? I guess that you have to choose between your personal values and the “D” after your name.
Frankly, Mr. Perez’ remarks are insane, and may reflect the pressure that the party is under to pander to the left.
It also shows the hypocrisy of the media.
What would media reports be saying if the GOP chairman had said something the other way,  i.e. the party will only support pro-life candidates?
We would hear about the GOP taken over by right-wingers and Christians unwilling to accept a different point of view. The GOP would be labeled “intolerant”. Every GOP lawmaker would be asked the question in the media. On the other hand, most of the media has been rather indifferent about Mr. Perez’ remarks.
In the meantime, the politics of this leave you wondering about his political common sense. Is the man that tone deaf?
Mr. Perez should chat with Wendy Davis, the Democrat who lost big in Texas in 2014. The reason, as Michael Barone pointed out, was abortion. I should add that Miss Davis’ position on abortion turned off a lot of Hispanic women in particular.
Who is flying the Democrats’ plane these days? It must be someone who wants to crash rather than land it.

More Kennedy comparisons, this time in France

Within minutes, many in the media were comparing Emmanuel Macron of France to the late President Kennedy:
Meanwhile, a vice president of the European Parliament has described Macron as a “French John F Kennedy” and said his first-round victory is good news for Europe.
Alexander Lambsdorff, a German liberal politician, said Sunday’s result was a victory for two protest candidates.
He described Le Pen as “a nationalist, a racist – I know the woman from the European Parliament, a very unpleasant person”.
Lambsdorff told German television on Monday that he hopes Macron, “this independent, fresh French John F Kennedy, if you like, succeeds in setting policy with his ideas”.
Wonder how long before they call Miss Le Pen “Le Nixon”!
It goes beyond France.  Back in 1994, a 40-something Mexican presidential candidate was assassinated during a campaign stop in a northern state.  Later that evening, I tuned in to a TV station from Mexico, and it didn’t take long for the panel to refer to him as “el Kennedy mejicano.”  I think the panel confused Bobby, shot during a campaign, and John, who was killed as president.  Let’s overlook that!
Of course, the late John F. Kennedy had very little in common with a left-of-center French politician in 2017.  My guess is that the late President Kennedy would have agreed with Miss Le Pen that Mr. Macron is weak on fighting terror.
We will never know for sure, but it is amazing how every 40-something political figure of the left is now the new Kennedy.  Of course, Kennedy was not really from the left, but we will leave that one to historians.
Let the French elect another leader who doesn’t have the courage to deal with their structural problems: no babies, an unsustainable welfare state, and an immigration policy creating chaos within its boundaries.
If elected, Macron will be highly unpopular in months, and some French leftist will regret that he isn’t more like Kennedy!

In Cuba, abortion is birth control

cuba-has-a-major-demographic-problem
Someday, we will look back at how the Castro regime devastated Cuba, from the economy to freedom to free abortions.
Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie serves on the advisory board for The Catholic Association.

She recently wrote some very troubling information about Cuba and abortion:
The main form of “birth control” is abortion, my patients tell me. Condoms and pills are hard to get, and they come and go according to the daily whims of the government.
Abortion, on the other hand, is free, ubiquitous, and taught aggressively in state education as an action entirely devoid of moral meaning.
So what is the result of this moral depravity?   As Dr. Pozo-Christie wrote:
“…..women in Cuba have almost entirely ceased to give birth.
In about 50 years, experts predict that over 40 percent of Cubans will be over 60.”
A sad story to say the least.   Or better put, the fruits of a corrupt leadership.

Remember when personal conduct did not affect your job?

Back in 1998-99, many Democrats and liberals defended President Clinton.   My favorite defense was that President Clinton’s private behavior did not affect his job, i.e. “look at your 401-K!” and the unemployment rate was something I heard about on TV back then!
I find this interesting because Bill O’Reilly’s alleged personal conduct did not affect his job either.   After all, his ratings never dropped.
This is why I’ve grown so skeptical of any public figure accused of sexual harassment, specially when we hear about them on The New York Times.
Back in the summer of 1998, when many of us were caught up in the McGwire-Sosa home run chase, this is how some women of the left reacted to the allegations against President Clinton.
This is how the late Marjorie Williams explained it back then:

Their excuses range from the procedural stonewall (“What is important for the American people to know is that there is a process in place to deal with these allegations,” in the words of Senator Barbara Boxer) to the creative inversion (What about Ken Starr’s “humiliation” of the women he dragged before the grand jury?, fumed Representative Nancy Pelosi) to the truly fanciful twist on gender politics (“Not so many years ago, a woman couldn’t be a White House intern,” said a straight-faced Senator Carol Moseley-Braun on Meet the Press).
As Miss Williams wrote further on:
The chief reason for feminists’ continued support of Clinton is clear: Clinton is their guy. Clarence Thomas was their enemy. Bob Packwood, a liberal Republican who was the next habitual boor to walk the plank, was a harder case for feminists, but in the end they tied the blindfold. Clinton, though, is the hardest case, because he is the most reliably supportive president they’ve ever had.
It wasn’t long ago that we made excuses for men who engaged in bad behavior.
Why is Mr. O’Reilly different?   Could it be his pro-life position?   or his support of traditional marriage?  or the War on Christmas?
Put me down as a total skeptic.
