Roe v. Wade will raise its ugly head again this week

This week, President Trump will announce a Supreme Court nomination. Based on news reports, he will pick from a list of extremely competent people. In other words, any of these men or women would have easily been approved years ago. Some would have likely been approved on a voice vote, as was the case with two of President Eisenhower’s nominations.
That was then and this is now. Welcome to politics since Roe v. Wade.
Back in 2005, David Brooks commented on the Samuel Alito hearings, the first of two of President George W. Bush’s nominations:
Justice Harry Blackmun did more inadvertent damage to our democracy than any other 20th-century American. When he and his Supreme Court colleagues issued the Roe v. Wade decision, they set off a cycle of political viciousness and counter-viciousness that has poisoned public life ever since, and now threatens to destroy the Senate as we know it.
When Blackmun wrote the Roe decision, it took the abortion issue out of the legislatures and put it into the courts. If it had remained in the legislatures, we would have seen a series of state-by-state compromises reflecting the views of the centrist majority that’s always existed on this issue. These legislative compromises wouldn’t have pleased everyone, but would have been regarded as legitimate.
Instead, Blackmun and his concurring colleagues invented a right to abortion, and imposed a solution more extreme than the policies of just about any other comparable nation.
Religious conservatives became alienated from their own government, feeling that their democratic rights had been usurped by robed elitists. Liberals lost touch with working-class Americans because they never had to have a conversation about values with those voters; they could just rely on the courts to impose their views. The parties polarized as they each became dominated by absolutist activists.
Unable to lobby for their pro-life or pro-choice views in normal ways, abortion activists focused their attention on judicial nominations. Dozens of groups on the right and left have been created to destroy nominees who might oppose their side of the fight. But abortion is never the explicit subject of these confirmation battles. Instead, the groups try to find some other pretext to destroy their foes.
And destroy your foes is exactly what we will see starting this week.
The Democrats are so invested in defending Roe v. Wade that every question will be about it. They will ask in hundred of ways about whether or not the nominee plans to overturn “settled law”.
Sorry, but the 1973 decision was an opinion not a law. We want to put abortion to the test of the law. We are the ones who would love to see a debate in legislatures from coast to coast on abortion and same sex marriage. Roe v. Wade killed any chance of the people crafting a law or compromise.
So get ready for the ugliest side of our politics, or another debate about abortion.

Where were the marches about the Cubans?

The airports are a bit crowded today with people protesting President Trump’s latest executive order.
Yet, they were empty when President Obama blocked the Cubans, or for that matter when Mexico deported some back to the island.
Rep. Diaz Balart of South Florida pointed out the double standard:
Obama on January 12 ended the nation’s “wet-foot, dry-foot” policy which for the past two decades had allowed Cubans to remain legally in the United States if they were able to set foot on U.S. land.
The Cuban government had been seeking an end to the policy and it followed Obama’s decision to renew diplomatic and economic ties with the country, which is still controlled by a dictatorship.
We ask again: what happened to the self righteous marchers? The answer is that George Soros did not want to pay for a march against President Obama.

We will have a real World Series if California secedes

california
We just learned that the secession movement in California is actually picking up steam:
A campaign for California to secede from the rest of the country over Donald Trump’s election is gaining momentum, with supporters allowed to start collecting signatures for the measure to be put to a vote.
California’s Secretary of State Alex Padilla gave the green light on Thursday for proponents of “California Nationhood” — also known as Calexit — to start collecting the nearly 600,000 signatures needed for the measure to qualify on the November 2018 ballot.
The 585,407 signatures required by July 25 represent eight percent of registered voters in California — the most populous state in the country with nearly 40 million residents and the world’s sixth-largest economy.
There is even talk that California will withhold taxes to the federal government to fight President Trump:

Officials are looking for money that flows through Sacramento to the federal government that could be used to offset the potential loss of billions of dollars’ worth of federal funds if President Trump makes good on his threat to punish cities and states that don’t cooperate with federal agents’ requests to turn over undocumented immigrants, a senior government source in Sacramento said.
The federal funds pay for a variety of state and local programs from law enforcement to homeless shelters.
“California could very well become an organized non-payer,” said Willie Brown, Jr, a former speaker of the state Assembly in an interview recorded Friday for KPIX 5’s Sunday morning news. “They could recommend non-compliance with the federal tax code.”
It’s fair to say that California has declared war on President Trump. I guess that’s what happens when California votes so differently than the the other 49. Mrs. Clinton beat Mr. Trump by 30 points in California, or 4 million votes.
Where do we go from here?
First, California is indeed one of the top GDPs in the world. However, it is also an overtaxed and highly regulated state, as any business person will tell you. I’m not sure that many industries or taxpayers will stay behind if they have to change their passports from the U.S. to the Republic of “choose your gender” California.
Second, California may find out that all of those military bases, and the jobs that they create, will start packing east the minute that California leaves the rest of us.
Third, and very important, how are all of those interest groups going to work together when they don’t have President Trump to blame for everything? What happens when President Jerry Brown calls for more tax increases to pay for a state with unsustainable public sector contracts?
They currently face a $1.6 billion deficit because of lagging tax revenue collections.
So it won’t happen. California will remain a state and that is a good thing for them and the rest of us.
However, one good thing about California being a foreign country is that a LA Dodgers vs Texas Rangers final would literally be a World Series. The winner will finally be the actual world champs.

President Trump needs to lower the volume on Mexico

trump-and-enrique-pena-nieto
It was a tough week for the U.S. and Mexico.  It started with talk of President Peña-Nieto visiting the U.S., but it ended with a cancelation of the visit.
To be honest, I think President Trump pushed President Peña-Nieto into a corner.  It was wrong, but both sides will get over it.  Mexico and the U.S. need each other a lot.
Down in Mexico, there is a “Mexico first” movement brewing, too, and none other than Carlos Slim is in the picture.
This is from CNBC:
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim said a united country could help the government negotiate with President Donald Trump.

Mexico needs to negotiate from a position of strength, Slim said in a Fridaynews conference.
Slim, who gained a $50 billion fortune owning mobile network America Movil, argued the clash between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has brought Mexico together.
Slim urged political parties in the country to unite behind Nieto.
While he called Trump a great negotiator, Slim said Friday that Mexico should not be scared of him or assume things will go badly.
Slim even joked that the U.S. will need Mexicans to build the wall.
During the last few days, I’ve exchanged a few messages with Mexican friends, and they are angry with Mr. Trump.  They fear that Mr. Trump is making Mr. Lopez-Obrador, the leftist who nearly won the 2006 election and put up a strong showing in 2012, into the next president of Mexico.
AMLO, as he is known in Mexico, is a leftist in the style of Chávez, or not the kind of man we really want next door.  You can count on him to be a nuisance and not cooperate with the U.S. at all.
Do you think we have troubles with Mexico?  Wait until a Chávez disciple takes over!
At the same time, some of my friends feel that Mr. Trump may actually be doing a much needed favor.  In other words, Mr. Trump may be forcing Mexicans to realize that they are too dependent on remittances (U.S. $25 billion) and not doing enough to make the country more appealing to the young people who are cutting our grass and fixing our roofs.
Time will tell where this story goes.  We are entering into a new period of U.S.-Mexico relations.
It could be good or bad.  I guess it depends on Mr. Trump and how far he wants to fight with Mexico.  I hope Mr. Trump lowers the volume because we have much bigger problems in this world than Mexico.

Remember the one about the great economy Obama left Trump?

Like that ear-crushing, obnoxious long version of “In a gadda da vida“, the Obama years were too long for those of us who live in the real world.
President Obama couldn’t help it, but he left us another one of his signature less than 2% GDP quarters:
The U.S. economy’s expansion slowed in the fourth quarter, and annual growth failed to reach 3% for an 11th straight year, reflecting the huge hurdles the Trump administration faces in trying to speed up a 7½-year-old expansion.
The article points out that a “wider trade deficit” was the biggest problem. It dragged the U.S. economy down, according to the experts. Wonder when President Trump pivots from Mexico’s US$ 50 billion deficit to the China’s really big one?
What does this mean now that President Obama is gone and President Trump now has to act?

Politically, it will certainly shut down all those Democrats who kept telling us that President Trump got an economic gift from Obama. Wonder if those glowing posts about the economy will now be amended? Will we hear that President Obama never saw the upper side of a 3% GDP?
President Trump will be under more pressure to energize the U.S. economy. He will recall President Reagan’s efforts from 1981. However, President Reagan did not have the crushing debt (US$ 20 trillion) that President Trump will have to take into consideration.
My hope is that the deficit hawks, of which I am a proud member, will understand that something must be done to pump the GDP into the 5-7% range as soon as possible. It is the only then that we will be able to put people back to work and pay down the debt.
In the meantime, let’s remember all those posts and articles about the great economy that President Obama left President Trump. It was good while it lasted!

Ernesto pulls a Tip O’Neill

Once upon a time, the Democrats had a Speaker of the House named Tip O’Neill. We remember him for having a good relationship with President Reagan. He also said that “all politics is local”!
President Ernesto Peña Nieto of Mexico just cancelled his trip to Washington next week. This is exhibit A of what Speaker O’Neill was talking about years ago.
Down in Mexico, President Peña Nieto is about as unpopular as any politician that I can remember. In the past, Mexican presidents became unpopular after leaving office. I frankly do not recall one this unpopular with two years to go (2012-18).
To be fair, he is unpopular because he tried to reform some sacred cows, such as the PEMEX oil monopoly and the corrupt teachers’ union. In other words, the left has been after President Peña Nieto for a couple of years.
President Peña Nieto is cancelling the visit because of what President Trump “tweeted” last night.

He made the announcement that he would skip the Jan. 31 session a few minutes before noon on his Twitter account.
This is the translated text:
“This morning we informed the White House that I will not attend the working meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with @POTUS. Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to reach agreements on behalf of both nations.”
A few hours earlier, Trump threatened to cancel a meeting scheduled for next week with the president of Mexico if the neighboring country is not willing to pay for a border wall.
“If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting” with Peña Nieto, Trump wrote on Twitter.
After Nieto’s announcement, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said the two leaders may yet meet at a date to be determined.
“We’ll look for a date to schedule something in the future,” Spicer told reporters as he exited Air Force One in Philadelphia, where Trump was attending a GOP retreat. “We will keep the lines of communication open.”
On Wednesday Trump signed an executive order authorizing the planned wall, just as a Mexican delegation led by Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray arrived at the White House for talks.
The timing caused outrage in Mexico, with prominent politicians and many on social media seeing at as a deliberate snub to the government’s efforts to engage with Trump, who has for months used Mexico as a political punching bag.
Frankly, I am very disappointed with both sides.
Up here, I do not understand why President Trump continues to bang the drum by saying that Mexico will pay for the wall. Build the darnn wall and move on to more important things.
Down in Mexico, President Peña Nieto has surrendered to an irrational political class that does not want to have a frank conversation about illegal immigration.
Don’t be surprised if President Peña Nieto’s approvals go up but the Mexican peso goes down!
We need for both countries to stop this silly posturing and get down to issues that really matter, such as cash & weapons going south plus people and drugs going north.
Based on my conversations with many Mexican friends and business people, I am convinced that building a wall would do wonders to stop those aforementioned weapons and cash boxes going south every day. The weapons are killing Mexicans and the cash is corrupting the system.
Unfortunately, the leaders won’t meet and the left in Mexico, and probably in other countries, couldn’t be happier. I’d bet that they are preparing their placards about “El trumpo the ugly gringo”.

Mexico deports a lot more than you may think

During my time in Mexico, I learned a couple of things about Mexico’s immigration laws.
First, Mexico is dead serious about immigrations laws. Our company hired an immigration lawyer to process all the paperwork. He came around once a year for us to sign our renewals, tax statements, and whatever else the Foreign Ministry required of us working and living there.
One time I said laughing: “Why are you guys so picky with us… all we do is pay taxes and spend our dollars”.
My Mexican attorney friend broke out laughing and said “Mensaje amigo, mensaje”.
In other words, “message” or that we don’t want the word to get out that this is an easy country for people to come into. He was of course referring to people who may use Mexico to go to the U.S.

Second, Mexico deports a lot. In fact, it’s something that most in the political class admit up front to remind the voters that they are looking out for them. Putting Mexico first is something that every Mexican president repeats proudly.
Yes, Mexico deports and quite a bit, as we saw this week in this article by Adriana Peralta, an advocate for El Salvador refugees who get caught up in Mexico:
The history of immigration in Mexico can be defined by its constant request to the United States for more ease of access, and by Mexico’s own deportation of other immigrants who enter the country through its southern border.
In 2016 there were 174,526 foreigners returned to their countries of origin, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Interior.
Of those, 142,509 people were from the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras).
In that same year, the United States expelled 240,255 people — 76,472 of which were from the Northern Triangle, and 149,821 more that were from Mexico.
The writer is someone who looks out for El Salvador immigrants, who often get caught up in Mexico without much of a chance for due process.
To be honest, I understand Mexico’s position. They have a border with the U.S. and would be flooded with people using its territory to go to the U.S., including Cubans who now being sent back to the island, too.
At the same time, it shows the hypocrisy of Mexico’s political class when they talk about illegal immigration in the U.S.
They hope that we don’t see them talking out of both sides of their mouths, as they saying goes. In my case, and for most of us who understand Mexico, we see the hypocrisy and wish that it would stop.

‘El Presidente’ Enrique Peña‐Nieto coming to Washington

campaign-2016-trump-mexico
Let me give President Enrique Peña Nieto a little credit for taking the initiative and setting up a meeting with President Trump. He is under a lot of political pressure south of the border. Let me give President Trump credit for accepting the visit. It shows me that both sides want to get something good started.
This is from the LA Times:
The Mexican president’s early visit to the Trump White House underscores the importance that Mexico City places on having smooth relations with the new  U.S. administration, despite candidate Trump’s many broadsides against Mexico and Mexicans.
According to a statement released by the Mexican government, Peña Nieto told Trump on Saturday that he hopes to work together “with a focus on respect for the sovereignty of both nations and shared responsibility.”
Beyond the politics, Mexico and the U.S. have serious common interests, from cartels that kill Mexicans and bring drugs to the U.S. to over $500 billion in trade.

Sadly, many of Mr. Trump’s statements have actually been a huge boost for the Latin American left. In other words, Mr. Trump has become the latest version of the Ugly Gringo that so much of the left likes to scream about.
My hope is that President Trump understands the importance of a change in tone and a stable Mexico and Latin America.
The latest IMF forecast is for Latin America to grow slowly over the next couple of years: 1.2% in 2017 and 2.1%  in 2018.
Such lousy growth will put tremendous political pressures on center right leaders in Argentina, Chile, and even Mexico. It will be boost for q left that does not have answers but can march with anti-Trump placards and blame free market policies for the decline.
So let’s hope that President Trump sees the big picture when he sits down with President Pena-Nieto.
First, I support the border fence but constantly saying that Mexico will pay for it puts President Pena-Nieto in an awful position back home. In other words, build the fence and move on.
Second, we can renegotiate NAFTA and other trade deals but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I understand the argument that NAFTA has taken some manufacturing south of the border, but it has also been great news for U.S. exporters, who are selling Mexico a lot of goods and services. This is a summary of our trade with Mexico:
Mexico was the United States’ 2nd largest goods export market in 2015.
U.S. goods exports to Mexico in 2015 were $236 billion, down 1.6% ($3.9 billion) from 2014 but up 97% from 2005.
U.S. exports to Mexico are up 468% from 1993 (pre-NAFTA).
U.S. exports to Mexico account for 15.7% of overall U.S. exports in 2015.
The top export categories in 2015 were: machinery ($42 billion), electrical machinery ($41 billion), vehicles ($22 billion), mineral fuels ($19 billion), and plastics ($17 billion).
U.S. exports of agricultural products to Mexico totaled $18 billion in 2015, our 3th largest agricultural export market.
Leading categories include: corn ($2.3 billion), soybeans ($1.4 billion), dairy products ($1.3 billion), pork & pork products ($1.3 billion), and beef & beef products ($1.1 billion).
U.S. exports of services to Mexico were an estimated $30.8 billion in 2015, 2.7% ($807 million) more than 2014, and 36.7% greater than 2005 levels.
It was up roughly 196% from 1993 (pre-NAFTA).
The United States has a services trade surplus of an estimated $9.2 billion with Mexico in 2015, down 12.7% from 2014.
Let me add a couple of points:
1)  We’ve had surpluses with Mexico before and currently have a deficit. It changes as these things tend to do; and,
2)  I see a lot of jobs in the U.S. when we exports billions of dollars in machinery, plastics and others. Some American companies are indeed making these and selling them to Mexico.
So let’s be sensible and work this out between neighbors.
Yes, I know that Mexico could do more to stop illegal immigration. At the same time, we could do more in fighting the illegal drug consumption flooding Mexico with dollars supporting cartels.
Let’s start fresh and find some common ground. There is the potential for lots of common ground!

We will look at the state of the Democrat Party and the influence of the radical left........how does Senator Schumer satisfy the left and work to reelect Democrats in red states....it could be very challenging given the political landscape of 2018............President Trump and President Pena Nieto will be getting together next week..........let's hope that it's a good meeting and both sides win.........we do $ 500 billion of trade with Mexico.......that's a lot of jobs.......and we remember Winston Churchill who died on this day in 1965.....and other stories.....

How would you like to be a centrist Democrat after these marches?

Over the last 24 hours, I’ve been thinking a lot about a few Democrats who live in Texas. I’ve known them over the years. Some go to my church. Some I’ve done business with. Some I talk Rangers or Cowboys with. Some are classmates from Wisconsin whose dads worked at union shops and had pictures of JFK and Humphrey on their walls.
They are what I’ve come to call Lloyd Bentsen Democrats, or the kinds of Democrats who must be horrified with what they saw over the weekend at the “women’s marches.”
Like Roger Simon, I don’t get these protests:
The idea that Trump, given his life and background, is a social conservative is almost silly.
His primary issues were — need I reiterate what must be drilled in all our brains — bringing back jobs, lowering personal and corporate taxes, cutting excessive business and environmental regulations, ending illegal immigration, repealing and replacing Obamacare, rebuilding the military, extreme vetting of immigrants from countries where terrorism is prevalent, an America-first foreign policy (no nation building) and revived infrastructure.

On the campaign trail, the social issues were almost completely ignored.
I listened to at least twenty of his speeches (probably a lot more) and can’t recall his mentioning same-sex marriage even once. (He was known to be favorable to it years before Obama and Hillary “evolved” on the issue.)
Exactly. This is why many of us had our doubts about Mr. Trump during the primaries. We thought that he was too liberal on social issues.
How can these women be this angry with a man who gave money to the Clinton Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Jesse Jackson, and the Democrats?
What are these marches really about?
They are not about women’s issues, unless you think that abortion, transgender rights, and the minimum wage are the most important things that women talk about.
By the way, I don’t think that the minimum wage topic is a winner with the growing number of women who are starting small businesses these days.
What we saw on Saturday is an angry bunch of women who bought their dresses for the Hillary election night party and now can’t return them for a full refund.
Sorry ladies but you don’t speak for most women, specially when you engage in the kind of pathetic language that we heard on Saturday.
And last but not least, what was a woman who believes in “sharia law” doing in a march of liberal women?
Let me say again. It must be very lonely and depressing to be a centrist Democrat these days. It must be so sad to watch your party taken over by Madonna and Ashley Judd!
