Joe Pena was a wonderful man and conservative leader!

We learned that Joe Pena died this week.  To say the least, it is a great loss to those of us who value integrity and friendships!

Everyone has a Joe Pena story.  He was one of the original Hispanic GOP leaders in the Dallas area and served in the Reagan administration.

My Joe Pena "story" goes back to 1984 when I was new to Dallas and looking for conservative GOP contacts.

We had coffee and Joe gave me a full report about all of the activities and people to meet.  He did it all with that wonderful smile and sense of humor.

Joe's humor was well known.  He'd always make fun of my Cuban background with a word or slang.   He gave me "a $1 million bill with his picture on it" the very last time that I saw  him!  He was so funny!

He made my day when he invited me to a "Hispanics for Reagan" meeting with Pres Reagan at the 1984 GOP convention in Dallas.  He did it again a few years later when he invited me to take a picture with then VP Bush running for president in 1988.

What else can you say about such a wonderful man?  He was quite an inspiration to all of us who carry the conservative flag.

We will miss Joe Pena a lot!

Adryana Boyne created a Facebook page with details about the funeral.  Please go there and show your respects to Gloria and his family.

Again, we will miss Joe Pena a lot:

My thoughts about 2011 and 2012!

2011 is over but the issues did not go away.

As we go from the old year to the new year, let me tell about the three issues that will be around for a while:

1) Iraq.....did we leave too soon?  Pres BO was handed a victory in Iraq and he has irresponsibly turned it into a potential defeat.  Frankly, I hope that I am dead wrong but "who lost Iraq" may be a real foreign policy issue in 2012.  It's going to be hard to blame this one on Bush.

2) The European economic crisis.....it doesn't go away because European leaders are not serious about addressing the structural problems, i.e. the "something for nothing welfare state."

3) Islamist victories in Egypt and the overall Middle East mess.....Iran does not fear Pres BO and they will spend much of 2012 pushing their weight around.

Speaking of 2012, we will have a new president.  I may be wrong, and things could change, but I don't see how Pres BO can be reelected.

It will be Pres Romney and VP Rubio PLUS a GOP Senate & House.  Let's hope that the GOP can use this mandate better than they did before.

Resolution 2012: I want a federal government that can GOVERN!

As far as I'm concerned, everybody loses when the President & Congress can not get anything done on time.

We can not continue to run our country like some "banana republic" where politicians are shouting at each other rather than governing seriously.

Let's start with Pres BO, or the man who is not in the game.  He wants to govern by letting other people carry the load or make the tough calls.

Let's go to the Dem Senate, who have never done a budget in 3 years.   I agree with The Washington Examiner:

"While both parties are share responsibility for the debacle over the payroll tax cut, the Democrat-controlled Senate bears special attention. Under the Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974, Congress must produce a five-year budget plan every year. But in 2010, both the House and Senate failed to do so for the first time since 1974.

After Republicans retook the House in November 2010, they got the lower chamber back on track by approving a 2012 budget plan this past April.

No such luck in the Senate.

It has now been 969 days, almost three years, since Senate Democrats have produced an annual budget plan, as they are required to do by law."

What's the point of paying these people, and their huge staffs?

The GOP House is not perfect, as we just saw with the "payroll tax" episode.  At the same time, the GOP House has passed a budget and voted on bills.

Of course, this "chaos" is the result of "zero" presidential leadership.  As we just mentioned, Pres BO has decided that he is going to drift along and get the credit somehow.

We have a dysfunctional federal government and it can not continue.

The 2011 season was great except for that "Twilight Zone of a 10th inning" of game 6!

From the 9-1 start to watching Derek Holland blossom into a major league pitcher, the 2011 season was a fan's dream.

The Rangers were a great team to follow, from Ian Kinsler blasting lead-off home runs to Neftali Feliz shutting down games.

However, it was game 6 that will probably stick in our minds for some time.  I am not dwelling on it but it was tough to come that close twice and watch the other guys celebrate.

it was a horrible ending to a game that will go down as a classic:

" Closer Neftali Feliz came in to pitch the ninth.

Ryan Theriot struck out swinging, but Albert Pujols doubled and Lance Berkman walked on four pitches. Craig struck out looking, and Feliz needed just one more out. Instead, Cardinals third baseman David Freese fell behind 1-2 in the count and then hit a long drive to deep right. Cruz went back, but not far enough and the ball sailed beyond his reach for a triple that scored two runs and tied the game.

It did not stay tied for long. Elvis Andrus singled with one out in the 10th off Jason Motte, and Josh Hamilton followed with a home run to right-center to give the Rangers a 9-7 lead.

Darren Oliver took over for Feliz in the 10th to face the bottom of the Cardinals' order and two left-handed hitters. But Daniel Descalso grounded a single through the right side and Jon Jay blooped a hit into shallow left, putting runners on first and second. They were bunted over by pinch-hitter Kyle Lohse, and Scott Feldman replaced Oliver.

Theriot hit a weak grounder to Beltre at third, who threw to first for the second out while Descalso scored. Pujols received an intentional walk. Berkman worked the count to 2-2 and then lined a run-scoring single to center to tie the game.

The game went into the 11th. The Rangers did not score in the top of the 11th and Freese won it with a walk-off home run off Mark Lowe.

It was a game that will be long be remembered, but there were other highlights worth recalling."

Like any 'classic game", we will get to watch it over and over at the ESPN classic channel or at that wonderful new MLB network.

Yes, get ready to watch Nellie Cruz misplay that fly ball in the 9th and that "Twilight Zone" bottom of the 10th inning when the Cards came back for the second time.

I guess that Cardinals, not cats, have 9 lives!

Romney is looking strong in Iowa and specially against Obama!

Could things look any better for Mitt Romney?

First, the latest Rasmussen poll has Gov Romney up 6 over Pres BO.   It is 45-39 or the first time that either one has led the other outside the margin of error.

By the way, wonder how the Pres BO 2012 campaign feels about a 39% showing?  They can not be happy about that!

They won't be happy with the new Gallup that has Pres BO's job approval at 41%.

They won't like this one either: Americans see Obama as farthest from their own politics; Romney, Huntsman, Paul the closest

Do you remember how the Dems were talking about Pres BO getting a lift in recent polling data?  He is not getting it on Gallup!

With all due respect to the other candidates, Mitt Romney is the best option to defeat Pres BO.  Again, look at the polls!

I also agree with PJ Tatler that Romney could bring a new appreciation of business and free enterprise.  He is also very "Reaganesque" when he talks about reversing our entitlement society and replacing it with an opportunity culture.

Check out our conversation with Mike Sage about the Romney campaign:

The "state of the family unit" at the end of 2011

The family is the foundation of any society.  You can't have a successful future without good kids and parents who love them.

Rick Johnson has focused on fathers and the preparation of young men to be fathers someday.  He writes a blog and recently addresses this issue:

"Unfortunately, our culture not only has low expectations for males, it seems to revel in trying to destroy masculinity.

We expect boys to act more like girls.

In Unleashing Courageous Faith, Paul Coughlin comments on what our culture does to boys, “Boys are being gunned down by manliness gone bad and by those who do not accept or appreciate it. Our culture tells young boys that traditional masculinity is bad, that men are stupid and deserve to be the object of disdain, contempt, and ridicule. Then we expect them to grow up and exemplify honor, integrity, and valor.”

Just watch nearly any television sitcom or commercial if you doubt that statement."

We also spoke with Dr Illena Johnson-Paugh about the state of the family in the West.  We can learn a great deal about what is happening over there.

Resolution # 1 for 2012: A president who wants to lead rather than pretend!

A year from now, we will have Pres BO or a new president.  We will probably have a GOP House and a 50-50 Senate.

What am I really hoping for?  Leadership and more leadership and more leadership.

We need leadership to tackle very difficult problems, specially entitlements and spending.

We are still waiting for Pres BO to deliver a speech calling on Social Security reform.

We are still waiting for the Senate Dems to pass a budget.

We need a president who will finally tells us that the "something for nothing" era is over.

Robert Samuelson described our problems perfectly:

"For years, there has been a "something for nothing" aspect to our politics. More people became dependent on government.

From 1960 to 2010, the share of federal spending going for "payments to individuals" (Social Security, food stamps, Medicare and the like) climbed from 26 percent to 66 percent.

Meanwhile, the tax burden barely budged. In 1960, federal taxes were 17.8 percent of national income (gross domestic product).

In 2007, they were 18.5 percent of GDP."

It sounds to me that we've been living under the illusion that 2 plus 2 is 5.  It's time to have a president who will tell us that the answer is 4 and only 4.

As I look forward to 2012, I want leadership because we don't have any of that right now.

El Chapo: Big win for the Mexican army in the war against the drug cartels!

We've been posting about the war south of the border for years.  Like any war, somethings have gone poorly and some well.  Today, we got some big news from Mexico:

"The Mexican army announced Sunday that it had captured the head of security for Sinaloa drug cartel head Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the world's most wanted men."

It is not quite the equivalent of capturing Saddam but it's big!

This is a big victory for Pres Calderon's policies.  We congratulate him for keeping the pressure despite calls from irresponsible politicians to make a "deal" with the cartels.

Also, this is further evidence that the next president of Mexico is likely to continue the frontal attack on the cartels.

Again, El Chapo's capture is not the end of the war but this is a big step forward.

We congratulate the Mexican Army for the good work!

PM Harper to Pres BO: Make a decision or our oil goes to China!

PM Harper of Canada is losing his patience:

"“I am very serious about selling our oil off this continent, selling our energy products off to Asia. I think we have to do that,” Harper said in the Monday interview with CTV National News."  (Canada)

PM Harper is a smart man.  He has oil and China would love to have it!

Of course, PM Harper is also a good friend of the US.  In other words, he'd rather sell it to us, his neighbor, commercial partner and NATO ally.

Like anyone else, PM Harper can not wait all day, or until Pres BO can explain the pipeline to his left wing base angry that he has not closed GITMO or pushed same sex marriage.

The pipeline issue is rather simple.

We are trying to break our dependence on Middle East oil.  However, Pres BO made all kinds of silly campaign promise to the "yes we can" screamers.

Pres BO wants to put this off until after the election.  PM Harper needs to sell the oil before that.

Let's hope that the GOP will stand and force Pres BO to veto oil from Canada.

Pres BO's executive order about "unnecessary travel" does not apply to his wife!

A couple of years ago, Pres BO signed an executive order to cut back on unnecessary travel:

"In an effort to save and cut back unnecessary cash flow, U.S. President Barack Obama signed an executive order for federal agencies to curtail travel expenses and save. This will hopefully amass about $4 billion in savings or roughly 20% of the budget."

It makes sense given our federal budget deficit.

So why is First Lady off and flying to Hawaii on her own again?

Frankly, this is obscene and Jeannie DeAngelis is the latest to pay attention:

"Not counting
expenditures relating to staff and security or the cost of the cargo plane that typically trails the first lady's jet, this year Michelle must have felt entitled to another 10-hour, $6,330-per-flight-hour trip from Washington DC to the $3,500-a-day Winter White House in Hawaii.  Christmas 2010 and 2011's early arrivals cost approximately $200,000.

Last summer, prior to Obama arriving in Martha's Vineyard, Michelle did a similar thing.  Unable to control her impatience to hit the beach, Mrs. Obama and her girls grabbed a "little bit of extra vacation"  --  all of four hours' worth.

Mrs. Obama, accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, boarded a US government jet just a few hours ahead of the President, who flew into a local airport later that evening accompanied by Bo, the family dog. The First Lady also had "her own motorcade from the airport to her vacation residence."  The cost of the four-hours-early arrival for the Martha's Vineyard summer vacation 2011 was reported to be around $100,000.

While kids are writing Santa Claus this year to ask for warm coats and shoes that fit, it's likely many Americans still feel that "Mrs. Obama's separate jet travel sends the wrong message on a host of issues, from global warming to the budget deficit to the economy -- in which currently so many people can't afford to take a vacation at all."

Which brings us back to the original question of why Michelle, after being criticized for allegedly spending more than $10 million of public money on luxurious vacations, would board yet another plane for the third time in 12 months and, while doing so, audaciously jack up the annual Michelle Obama Early Vacation air travel cost to more than $300K?"

We understand that the First Lady is entitled to security and protection.  However, should she be traveling so much when her husband signed an executive order telling federal employees to travel wisely?

The latest definition of "racism" is asking AG Holder for an explanation of how 2,000 guns ended with the Mexican cartels!

Please check out AG Holder on the pages of The NY Times:

"“This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him,” he said, “both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we’re both African-American.”"

I guess that we are all racists now!

AG Holder's problem is not his race.  His real problem is that the "guns to Mexico" stories have been confusing and weird.  He has been all over the map in addressing questions and/or concerns.  He has not formally fired anybody.  He just keeps hiding behind the canard that the Dept of Justice is doing its own investigation.

Frankly, AG Holder should be fired for bringing this "racism" charge in the first place.

Will someone ask Pres BO if he agrees with AG Holder?

In the meantime, are the families of the 200-plus Mexicans killed by these guns racists too?  Aren't they asking for an explanation like the rest of us?

What about Agent Terry?  Is his family racist too?  Haven't they asked for an explanation about the gun that killed their son?

P.S. Check out our Tuesday commentary & discussion of this topic:

I guess that we are not "smart enough" to appreciate how great BO is!

We have not seen "narcissism" like this.  Check out what Pres BO thinks of himself:

".....I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president — with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln — just in terms of what we’ve gotten done in modern history.."

I get it.  We just don't see a great president when we have one.

Actually, it is silly for a president to compare himself to greats like FDR and Lincoln.

Does anyone think that BO faced a Great Depression with 25% unemployment?  Or a country on the verge of a Civil War that killed 600,000 Americans.

Also, I hope that someone told Pres BO that LBJ did not seek reelection.  Furthermore, his big domestic proposals passed BECAUSE of GOP support.

I'm all for having a self confident president but this is different.  This is narcissism!

Some thoughts about the end of the Iraq War!

We all knew that US troops would leave Iraq someday.  It was definitely Pres Bush's policy to retire troops by the end of 2011.  After all, it was Pres Bush who agreed on such a timeline back in 2008.

A few days ago, Pres BO  gave a speech that left a lot us thinking about the past, or the past when candidate BO opposed the surge and call this a "dumb war".

We understand that Pres BO is the commander-in-chief and had the responsibility to speak to the troops.  However, it would have been nice, and good for the country, if he had said a positive word about Pres Bush.

First, it would have been well received by the troops.  We forget that Pres Bush and VP Cheney were very popular with the troops.

Second, it would have been good for the country.  We could use a little "unity" at at time like this.  Who would have been angry if Pres BO had given Pres Bush a little "credit" for sticking with the plan and bringing about the end of the war?

Yes, there were many parts of the speech that were good.  Pres BO recognized the troops' hard work and that was good.

In the end, Pres BO was all about him.  He was all about that "end the war promise" although this is not the promise that he actually made as a candidate.

Last, but not least, there is something wrong with a president who will not say anything good about his predecessor.

I remember Pres Clinton complimenting Pres Bush's leadership in the Gulf War.

I remember Pres Bush saying some nice things about Pres Clinton when the White House unveiled his portrait.

Again, it speaks volumes that a man will not say a good word about the predecessor who handed him Iraq in better shape than he founded in 2001.

Looking forward, Iraq will face many challenges.  Like South Korea in the 1950's, Iraq will have to deal with political unrest and foreign threats.

Frankly, I'd prefer if we had left some troops to show Iran, and enemies of democracy, that we are serious about the future.

We can say this:  Pres BO now owns Iraq and let's hope that everything works out well!

Suggestions for Saint Peter: Heaven for Havel, Purgatory for Hitchens & TRIPLE HELL for Kim Jong!

It's been an extraordinary weekend for St Peter at the gates of heaven.

He has some new arrivals and they don't get any more different than these 3.

Havel made the world a better place to live.  He stood up to communist thugs and ended up running his country.  He showed courage and became a symbol for all of those who value freedom.  They don't come any more heroic than Mr. Havel.  He will be missed but cheered when he walks the halls of heaven.

Hitchens died as an atheist and needs a little time in purgatory to make up for that.  St Peter should assign an angel to give him a tour of heaven.  At the same time, Hitchens deserves a lot of credit for telling his lefty friends to "get over Bush" and see the reality of terrorism.

Kim Jong was one of the most despicable human beings to ever live on earth.  I don't think that there is enough fire in hell for this guy.  I hope that he finally comes to terms with all of the death, suffering and starvation that he caused on earth.  It may take 500 years in hell for this guy to pay for all of the horrible things that he did down here.

We have a dysfunctional federal government because Pres BO does not want to lead!

Once again, the affairs of our federal government are running down to the last minute.    We are governing by "deadline"!

We have another deal that has prevented a "shutdown".  However, it is another short-term solution that will put us in another "deadline" soon.

What do we need?  How about presidential leadership?  How about a president who brings both sides into his office and honestly "brokers" a deal?

Unfortunately, Pres BO does not want to get his hands dirty and our nation just keeps drifting.

The ACLU is the latest to express disappointment with Pres BO!

It's been a tough Obama term for all of those who voted for change.  In fact, Pres BO's anti-terror policies have been more about "continuity" than "change".

A couple of days ago, "hope and change" found a new harsh critic: The ACLU

During the Bush years, and specially the Obama presidential campaign, the left in the US had a lot of fun beating up Pres Bush over GITMO and the indefinite detention of terrorists.

They called it "the Bush police state".

Of course, Pres Bush never locked up any of his critics or irresponsible newspapers like The NY Times that published national secrets.

Yes, "the Bush police state" tolerated dissent and a free press!  What a "police state"!

As a candidate, BO went out of his way to beat up on Pres Bush.  He advocated closing GITMO because it "recruited" terrorists.  He wanted us to be popular by living up to our traditions although he never actually explained what in the world he was talking about.

Pres BO has met reality.  "Hope and change" is now just a memory in the minds of those who subscribed to this nonsense.

GITMO is open because a Dem Congress did not want the responsibility of closing it and having to place the detainees in a prison in their districts.

We now hear that indefinite detention will continue, specially for terrorists.

Don't get me wrong.  I think that we should hold terrorists indefinitely.

However, it makes me ask that question again:  Was BO that naive or was he just a cynical Democrat telling a lot of "jumping yes we can screamers" what they wanted to hear?

Based on the equally cynical "class warfare campaign", put me down as one of those who thinks that 2008 was all about telling "yes we can screamers" what they wanted to hear!

Don't blame me!  I voted for McCain!

In the meantime, some in the left are indeed furious with Pres BO.  See Cenk Uygur: Obama Worse Than Bush.

The "class warfare" & "race card" strategies are NOT working for Pres BO & AG Holder!

The Obama White House is getting a lot of bad polling data these days.

We understand that the election is still 11 months away but they can't be cheering at the BO campaign headquarters about these numbers.

Our friends at Power Line have a summary of public reaction to a couple of the latest moves:

"While stirring racial division may help energize the Democrats’ base, it appears that the anti-ballot integrity movement will not be popular with the broader electorate.

Scott Rasmussen finds that an overwhelming 75% support photo ID requirements.

Eric Holder, meanwhile, is increasingly unpopular, with 19% favorable/43% unfavorable ratings among likely voters.

This probably relates mostly to Fast and Furious, but Holder is not a strong figure to carry the anti-ballot security message.

The Democrats also hope to stir up their base by attacking state efforts to curb illegal immigration.

Here, too, they are paddling the canoe uphill, as likely voters say, by a 52%/34% margin that they would like their state to enact an immigration law like Arizona’s."

Translation:  It is not working!  (
President Obama’s Ratings Are Consistently Low)

The public is smart enough to understand that "photo IDs" are not racist.   Besides, what exactly is the objection of asking someone to show a photo ID before voting?

They also see through AG Holder's bizarre explanations about putting 2,000 guns in the hands of people terrorizing the US-Mexico border.   I think that it's become very clear that "helping Mexico" fight cartels had nothing to do with these weapons.  Unlike Pres Bush, who signed The Merida Plan to help Mexico, this "Fast & Furious" was all about putting guns in Mexico and blaming Texas gun shops operating legally here.

Last, but not least, the voters give Arizona, and other states, credit for trying to fix the illegal immigration problem in the absence of presidential leadership.   What are people supposed to do when killers with dangerous weapons walk through your backyard and BO & Holder do not answer the phone?

Perhaps, this is why another poll reports:
More than half say President Obama should not be re-elected!

The Obama White House has decided that they need to get their base excited again with a rerun of "yes we can" and "si se puede".  They desperately need a massive turnout of minorities like in 2008.

Based on some recent analysis, it appears that the base  is yawning rather than cheering these days!  Nobody seems to be watching the "yes we can" reruns anymore.

Also, they are turning off the broader electorate with divisive messages about putting one group against another.

In 2008, candidate BO conveniently dropped his membership in Rev Wright's Church.   BO may have left the church but Rev Wright's "class warfare" & "race card" messages did not leave him.

Someone needs to tell Pres BO that Americans have never bought the "class warfare" message!  Americans do not hate rich people.  Instead, they aspire to be successful and prosperous.  They actually appreciate the opportunity that our free market economy gives the hardworking to succeed and live a better life.

The reelection strategy is off and running BUT it is not working.

Taryn Guerrero Davis, my vote for "Texan of the Year"

Every year, The Dallas Morning News nominates several people for "Texan of the Year".  They usually nominate some great Texans, such as Nolan Ryan who has turned the Texas Rangers into a winning baseball organization.

In recent years, they've nominated Laura Bush, our wonderful First Lady who did so much to fight for the rights of women in Afghanistan and that region.

Over the last few days, they've been presenting their 2011 nominations.  They are all great Texans who've done this or that.

My choice for 2011 is Taryn Guerrero Davis, an amazing young woman who can teach all of us a lesson or two about life.

Her story is absolutely great:

"A wife at 20, Davis was now a widow at 21, alone and struggling with the death of her husband and high school sweetheart, Michael, an Army corporal killed by roadside bombs in Iraq in 2007.
It happened barely 90 minutes after she had exchanged instant messages with him."

She is 25 today and an advocate for war widows and families:

"American Widow Project, a national support group for spouses of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The group has connected with more than 900 widows and has hosted 16 events around the country, including nine in 2011."
