2007: Remember when Kissinger warned us about withdrawal from Iraq?

Let's go back to 2007 and all of the talk of getting out of Iraq.

Let's recall  Withdrawal is not an option by Henry A. Kissinger:

"The disenchantment of the American public with the burdens it has borne alone for nearly four years has generated growing demands for some form of unilateral withdrawal. But under present conditions, withdrawal is not an option.American forces are indispensable. They are in Iraq not as a favor to its government or as a reward for its conduct.

They are there as an expression of the American national interest to prevent the Iranian combination of imperialism and fundamentalist ideology from dominating a region on which the energy supplies of the industrial democracies depend. An abrupt American departure will greatly complicate efforts to help stem the terrorist tide far beyond Iraq; fragile governments from Lebanon to the Gulf will be tempted into pre-emptive concessions.

It might drive the sectarian conflict within Iraq to genocidal dimensions."
Nevertheless, President Obama went ahead and withdrew from Iraq.   And Mr. Kissinger turned out to be right!

China has over a billion people and the world's second largest economy.

Yet, that's not the biggest issue in China.

Unfortunately, there are too many men because of gender selection.

See China and the Angry Bachelors:

"Many Chinese couple, particularly those living in urban areas, were restricted to one child. Culturally, the Chinese prefer males (as a form of birth control, since men cannot give birth, and can produce more food on a farm).

Gender detection technology became available for pregnant women over the last few decades, and that led to many female fetuses being aborted.

As a result, 118 boys are now being born for every girl. In some areas, it's 130 boys for every hundred girls.

Some children of the "gender selection" era have come of age, and the boys are noticing that there are not enough potential wives to go around."

The bottom line: Too many Chinese men and not enough Chinese women.

A lot of Americans agree with President Carter

Image result for jimmy carter clip art images

For the record, President Jimmy Carter is 0-2 with me. In other words, I voted against him in 1976 and 1980. I always thought that Mr. Carter was a decent man but completely out of his league in the presidency. To be fair, he has done some good post-presidency work in various charitable activities and monitoring elections in Latin America.
Over the last few days, President Carter made two remarkable statements.
First, he admitted that the Carters voted for Senator Sanders. Is that an indictment of the Clintons or what?  Wonder how many other Democrats did the same thing?
Second, he mentioned that the media has been too harsh on President Trump. This is from The Hill:
Carter pointed to the reports that question Trump’s mental stability as a sign the press is going too far in scrutinizing him.

“I think they feel free to claim that Trump is mentally deranged and everything else without hesitation,” Carter continued.
President Carter’s remarks coincide with a poll saying that 46% believe that the media makes up stuff about President Trump. Frankly, it’s easy to understand that after we see the way that Puerto Rico was reported.
President Carter’s remarks are being reported by some as a sign that he is looking for a diplomatic assignment in North Korea. It may be that he wants another shot at North Korea.   However, I don’t think that was Mr. Carter’s motives for criticizing the press.
My sense is that Mr. Carter is looking at the facts and realizing that the media is overdoing its attacks on President Trump. It looks like a lot of Americans agree with him!

August 2005: We were talking about nuclear power

Related image

Some of us are old enough to remember the 3-Mile Island incident from the spring of '79.  It was not Chernobyl in the old USSR but it did frighten a few people.

Is nuclear power making a comeback? I hope so but new polls show that majorities now oppose nuclear energy

I would love to see 75-100 nuclear plants supplying much of our residential energy needs.  It would be a huge step forward on the road to economic independence.Nuclear power is a serious alternative to fossil fuel. We need to invest more in nuclear plants.  At the same time, cheap gasoline prices are making it difficult to talk about any other type of energy.
