A horse with a big name

A horse with a big name: On this day in 1973, Secretariat captivated the world by winning the Triple Crown in spectacular fashion.  I sat with my father and brother and watched the race.  We were not horse racing fans, but then most people watching…

We remember Les Paul (1915-2009)

Les Paul, Guitar Innovator, Dies at 94 - The New York Times
We remember Les Paul who was born in Milwaukee on this day in 1915.  He died in 2009.

Les Paul impacted every kid who ever tried playing an electric guitar.

Better than that, his riffs and innovative electric sounds impacted Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones and lots of other rockers born after Les and Mary recorded so many tunes.

Happy # 73 Dave Parker

We say happy birthday to Dave Parker who was born in Mississippi on this day in 1951.  He turned into one of the most consistent hitters of the last 50 years.

Parker played most of his career with the Pirates:   .305 average over 11 years plus 2 battling titles & the 1978 MVP.

He also played with the Reds, A's, Brewers and Blue Jays.

His career numbers generate Hall of Fame conversations.  However, he has not been selected:  .290 career batting average, 339 HR, 1,439 RBI & 2,712 hits.

Great hitter!

We remember Les Paul (1916-2009) and the electric guitar!

Les Paul live 3.jpg
Les Paul was bon in Wisconsin on this day in 1916.

We don't think of Les Paul as a rocker. However, he had a huge impact on every rock song recorded with an electric guitar.

This is from the AP:
"As an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock 'n' roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the "tracks" in the finished recording.
He was a wonderful guitar player and set the table for guitars to come!

June 1966 and 5 Twins go deep in the same inning

We remember Tony Oliva for winning 3 AL batting titles

We remember Zoilo Versalles for the 1965 AL MVP.

They were 2 of the 4 cubanos who played for the 1965 AL champion Twins.   The other two were Camilo Pascual and Sandy Valdespino.
Back in June 1966, Tony and Zoilo were a part of very unique baseball history.  They both hit home runs along with teammates Rich Rollins, future Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Don Mincher.
I should add that Camilo Pascual and Sandy Valdespino were also involved in that historic game.  Pascual started the game but left early.  Valdespino grounded out between Versalles and Oliva’s home runs.

1973: Remember the day that Secretariat was the world's favorite horse?

Secretariat | Titles, Results, & Facts | Britannica
On this day in 1973, Secretariat captivated the world's attention by winning the Triple Crown in absolutely spectacular fashion.

I can not think of another event like it.

Perhaps, the US beating the USSR in hockey in the 1980 Winter Olympics is a close second.

Secretariat was just an amazing horse.  He was clearly the favorite to win the Belmont and Triple Crown but no one expected a race like this.

I was very lucky to watch this race on TV.
