Happy # 76 Jerry Mathers

Back in 1964, our family arrived in Wisconsin.  We learned a lot of English back then watching TV, such as "Leave it to the Beaver".

We remember Jerry Mathers who was born in Iowa on this day in 1948.

Mathers will always be "The Beaver" in "Leave it to Beaver", one of the most popular TV shows ever.

The show had four characters that everyone could love:  Dad Ward Cleaver, Mom June Cleaver, Wally and Beaver.

And let's not forget Eddie Haskell, who probably drove every mother crazy.

Learning English with "The Beaver"!  I can identify with that!

We remember Charlie Watts (1941-2021)

We remember Charlie Watts, the wonderful drummer of The Rolling Stones.    He was born in Kingsbury, UK, in 1941 and died August 2021.

Since joining the group in 1962, Charlie has been in the background handling the drums for one of the all time great rock bands.

Charlie met Mick Jagger and Keith Richards hanging around the London music scene.

Watts is # 12 in Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 100 drummers.     His genius was to understand that he was the drummer and to do the drumming!

June 2, 1941: Lou Gehrig died

Lou Gehrig took himself out of the Yankees' lineup in 1939.    It ended the consecutive game streak at 2,130 games, from 1925 to 1939!

Lou died two years later in 1941.  He died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 37 in New York.  We call it Lou Gehrig's Disease.

To this day, "The Pride of the Yankees" is my favorite baseball movie.   Gary Cooper played Gehrig and it is great.

President Cleveland married Frances Folsom on this day in 1886.    Grover Cleveland was a bachelor when he was elected in 1884.    Frances was 27 years younger than Mr. Cleveland.

She was a very popular First Lady because of her youth and charm.

President and Mrs. Cleveland had 5 children, including Baby Ruth, the first baby born to a president in the White House.

Mr. Cleveland was the Democrat nominee in 1884, 1888 and 1892.     He lost in 1888 and won the other two times.

Babe Ruth retired from baseball in 1935.

He did not finish his career with the Yankees.  Ruth played his last season with the Boston Braves.    He hit # 714 in Boston!

Without question, the most significant baseball player of all time.    I am not saying that he was the best player but was the game's greatest personality.
