Democrats waste everyone's time with COVID cash bonanza giveaway bill

Years ago, I heard that Senator Bob Dole said this about legislating:

All you need to know is this.  You can never go wrong by voting for a bill that fails, or against a bill that passes.

Let me borrow a bit of Senator Dole’s wisdom and say this: the easiest thing is to vote for a bill that you know will never become law.

On Friday night, the House Democrats voted for a mammoth bill that includes everything under the liberal sun.  This is from NBC News:

The Democratic-controlled House voted 219 to 212 to approve the bill, which includes $1,400 direct payments, a $400-a-week federal unemployment bonus, a per-child allowance of up to $3,600 for one year and billions of dollars to distribute the coronavirus vaccines and to assist schools and local governments.

The vote split largely on partisan lines, with every Republican voting against the measure and just two Democrats joining them — Jared Golden of Maine and Kurt Schrader of Oregon.

Wonder how many more Democrats wanted to vote “no” but couldn’t?

According to polls cited in the article, the bill was supported by majorities of voters.  If so, then why didn’t any GOP members support it?

In sum, this is a horrible bill with something for every interest group.  It will never make it in the U.S. Senate, and that’s the best part.

Is the border about to explode?

The news from the border is that the kids, and lots of them, are coming.  This is from Axios:

A Customs and Border Protection staffer told top administration officials Thursday the agency is projecting a peak of 13,000 unaccompanied children crossing the border in May, sources directly familiar with the discussion told Axios.

Get ready for chaos.

The Biden administration is getting the "shelters" ready or the places to put these children. It will also move these children to other places because there is not enough room on the border anymore.

What could go wrong?   Let me share a few possibilities:

1) These kids are coming from Mexico and Central America where COVID is getting worse, not better.  Is it fair to ask:  Who will these children infect?  Are they going to be isolated?  How is that going to look?

2) Who is paying for this?  My guess is that the taxpayers will pay for it but the problem is that no one explained this during the campaign.  All we heard in the campaign was that the Biden administration would be more "humane."  My guess is that most Americans do not believe that "humanity" is the same as taking thousands of children from other countries.

What will this play in 2022?  Not well -- every Democrat running in 2022, especially in districts between the coasts, will be worried about explaining this disorder on the border.

Kristof got it right

Honestly, I was not expecting this, but Nicholas Kristof is right about school openings.  This is from Fox News:

“Many Democrats seemed to be more suspicious of in-person schooling last summer when President Donald Trump called for it,” he writes, adding, “We shouldn’t let ourselves be driven by ideology rather than science.”

Yes, a little too much Trump Derangement Syndrome on the Democrat side of the aisle.

Wonder when the teacher’s public union will call on the New York Times to cancel Kristof?  After all, telling the truth can get you canceled in today’s climate.

Many of us have seen Catholic schools or other private schools open and operate successfully in North Texas.  Some of our public schools have also opened with no apparent damage to kids or teachers.  In fact, I spoke with a father a couple days ago who told me that his kids can choose between “in person” or “virtual” in the local high school.

The real question is this:  How much damage has the union done to its brand?  The answer is significant.  You are seeing more and more parents “home schooling” or calling the private schools and negotiating the enrollment of their children.  For example, a local friend who works for the Catholic schools told me that the phone is constantly ringing or parents asking for a spot this year.

Maybe Mr. Kristof can follow this article with one about how the media shot itself in the foot by going anti-Trump 24/7.

Vicente Fox sticks his nose into the El Chapo case

Vicente Fox got off to a great start by winning the 2000 presidential election and putting an end to 70-something years of one-party rule in Mexico.   It was historic and very promising but did not quite work out as most Mexicans anticipated.  To be fair, the Mexican swamp is a bit more complicated than ours.

Since leaving office in 2006, President Fox has found a way of sticking his nose in everything, especially getting into fights with President Trump over the border wall.

He is back in the news with a rather interesting tweet about Emma Coronel Aispuro, El Chapo’s young pretty wife.   By the way, how do they say “trophy wife” in Spanish?  I’m not sure, but Emma fits the description.

“El Presidente” Fox tweeted about the arrest and a lot of Mexicans are wondering what in the world he’s talking about.  He wrote in Spanish something like this:  “Don’t worry, Emma.  The president will come to the rescue!!”

What’s that supposed to mean?  President Lopez-Obrador is going to intervene to get her out of the U.S.?   I think that he was referring to the 2020 arrest of a former Mexican defense secretary, retired Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos.  He was accused of drug trafficking and money laundering, the same as El Chapo’s wife.

I asked a couple of Mexican friends south of the border and got a couple of  interesting responses:

First, Vicente Fox is just looking for attention.  He wants an interview with CNN; and,

Second, El Chapo just wants his pretty wife in prison so he can spend more time with her.

Time will tell but Mexican politics just gets more and more interesting all the time.

The pause that doesn't refresh

Well, let me show my age by recalling that famous Coca Cola ad about the “pause that refreshes.”  I guess that it’s been around since 1929 so my parents probably remember it too. I recall that they had a Spanish version of that slogan called “la chispa de la vida” or the spark of life.

Coca-Cola’s employee training is gone woke these days, according to news reports:

The images show a section of the training titled “Confronting Racism. Understanding what it means to be white. Challenging what it means to be racist.”

The training then moves to a slide with instructions on how employees can “be less white.”

“Be less oppressive, be less arrogant, be less certain, be less defensive, be less ignorant, be more humble, listen, believe, break with apathy, break with white solidarity” are listed as ways to become less white.

The training then claims that this effort to be less white has to start early, as children as young as three are already taught that their white race makes them inherently superior.

“In the U.S. and other Western nations, white people are socialized to feel that they are inherently superior because they are white,” the slide reads. “Research shows that by age 3 to 4, children understand that it is better to be white.”

“Try to be less white,” the training concludes.

How does a person act “less white”?  What in the world does that mean?  How do we come together by focusing so much on skin color rather than the product we make and sell?  Are we paying the price for filling our HR departments with social justice warriors?

The country will get more and more divided and angry.  As for me, “Diet Dr. Pepper” based in Waco, Texas tastes a lot better all of a sudden.

Could we come together like we did 40 years ago?

Back in 1980, many of us spent President Washington’s birthday watching an Olympic hockey game.  It went into history books as the “Miracle on Ice.”   They even made a movie out of that day when the U.S. beat the mighty USSR, 4-3.

As you may remember, we were in the middle of various crises, abroad and at home.

First, the USSR had just invaded Afghanistan and was pushing its weight around in Nicaragua and paying for Cuban troops in Africa.

Second, Iran had kidnapped U.S. diplomats and mocking President Carter every day.

It seemed like no one feared the U.S. The bad buys certainly didn’t.

Third, the U.S. economy was struggling, from long gas lines to inflation to stagflation.

In the middle of all this, a bunch of young Americans gave us the time of our lives.  It was the first hockey game that I ever paid attention to!

The U.S. beat the old USSR in the Olympic semifinals to move on to the gold game. What a great game.  In fact, listening to Al Michaels of ABC call the last minute of that game was unbelievable.

Here is the story of that day:

“In one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college players, defeats the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet squad, previously regarded as the finest in the world, fell to the youthful American team 4-3 before a frenzied crowd of 10,000 spectators. Two days later, the Americans defeated Finland 4-2 to clinch the hockey gold.”

It gave us the lift that we all needed back then!  Again, what a game and how timely that it happened on George Washington’s birthday.

Looking back at that day, could that happen today?  We hear of schools dropping Washington’s name.  Would people today complain that it was an all-white team projecting white supremacy?

I hope that I’m wrong.  I was there cheering those young men that day in 1980.  I had disagreements with people back then but no one was cheering against the country.  On the contrary, this hockey game brought the nation together.

Could that happen today?  I hope so, but 20-something folks back in 1980 had a more positive view of their country than the ones that I see on TV or streets today.  We had disagreement but we were all waving the U.S. flag on hoping for a victory on Washington’s birthday.

Happy # 78 Jack Billingham

We say happy birthday to Jack Billingham, a very good right handed pitcher.      He was born in Florida on this day in 1943.

Jack broke with the Dodgers in 1968 and was traded to Houston the next year.

He became one of the best right handers in the NL with Cincinnati:  87-63, 3.85 ERA and 18 Shutouts.    He was also a great post-season pitcher:    2-0, 0.36 ERA and 1 earned run in 25⅓ innings over 3 World Series with the Reds.

Jack retired with 145-113 record, 15 shutouts and 74 complete games.    He was a member of the legendary 1975 "Red Machine".

11 Central Time will never the the same without Rush

Like many of you, I was shocked to hear about Rush Limbaugh’s death.  By coincidence, I had just tuned in they announced that his wife would say something.  For a second, I thought that she had news of Rush undergoing some special treatment.  Then she told us the sad news that many of us feared because our favorite host had been gone so much lately.

Back in the fall of 1990, I was working on several projects down in Ciudad Juarez on the other side of the border from El Paso, Texas.  My work required me to fly to El Paso on Tuesday mornings and spend a couple of days in Ciudad Juarez.  My plane from Dallas landed around 9:45 local time and then I rented a car for the drive across the border.

A few minutes getting in my car, Rush would come on the air and I loved the show.  It was so different from anything on the radio those days. Later, I found Rush on Dallas radio and I’ve been listening ever since.   He’s been #1 in Dallas since 1992 when he went on WBAP.

Everyone is talking about his passing.  I won’t waste my time with the trash coming out of the left.  It’s awful and unproductive to focus on people who hate that much.    What good comes from that?  No good, which is why many of them to have to hate just to get noticed.

For me, Rush’s success was because he was so genuine, believed what he was saying and loved the U.S. and what it stood for.   I related to it every second that I had the good fortune of listening to his monologue or those wonderful parodies from Paul Shanklin.   I guess that my favorite is still the one about Sharpton and Jackson.

How much will we miss Rush every day talking about politics and everything else?  I will miss him a lot, and 25 million will too.

11 a.m. weekdays will never be the same.

Ask former President Obama about Chicago and Lincoln

My friend in Chicago called to inquire about our electricity issues.  I guess that everybody is talking about Texans freezing at home.  The good news is that most of us are okay now.   He added that Chicago is now looking at reviewing a few school names starting with favorite son Lincoln.  You guessed it:  white supremacy!

It left me a bit surprised because no one is asking former President Obama about President Lincoln.  As I recall, then-senator Obama announced his presidential campaign in Springfield, Illinois.  Guess who is buried in Springfield?

As you probably remember, president-elect Obama took a train to Washington D.C.  Guess whose route he followed?  Let me remind you about that day:

Barack Obama’s arrival in Washington by train today harkens back to the inaugural White House trip of the former President who is Obama’s political idol: Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, our 16th President rode the rails through New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania en route to the capital.

So Lincoln was Obama’s political idol?   Let me say a couple of words:

First, It’s wonderful that our first African American President would admire the Great Emancipator.  It makes sense.

Second, what does canceling Lincoln say about the state of the Left?  It tells me that many in the Left don’t know about their country or don’t care about the nation that provides them the freedom to be stupid.

It’s time to put a question to President Obama about this issue.  After all, his city wants to cancel his political idol.

Democrats talking Trump parents talking schools

During the CNN town hall, Joe Biden answered a question by saying that he was tired of talking about President Trump.

Maybe he is, but his fellow Democrats can’t stop talking about the guy living in Florida.   From Georgia to New York, there are many investigations opening.   The New York Times wants more investigations, too.   A House Democrat wants to use the KKK law from 1871 for intimidation and incitement of Capitol riot.

As the Democrats obsess with President Trump, parents from coast to coast are sending the political class a different message:  Open the schools or else.   This is from David Catron:

In most red states, public schools opened up last fall for full time in-person instruction or some hybrid of in-person and distance learning. The blue states have, however, been considerably more dilatory about reopening. These states are, of course, governed by Democrats who are bought and paid for by the teachers unions. During the most recent election cycle, for example, the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) contributed a combined total of $43.6 million to Democrats and outside spending groups that support them. In the reopening debate, money talks and science walks. Ask California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

By the way, wonder if these Democrat politicians even send their kids to public schools?   We remember that President Clinton and President Obama did not.

So the blue vs red divide keeps widening.  On one hand, the “blues” are talking Trump “All Day and All of the Night” to quote the Kinks.  On the other hand, the “reds” want the teachers’ union to to care about the kids and to get back to work.  It’s hard to believe that those two groups are living in the same country.

And the media?  They are pitching softballs at Biden and avoiding difficult questions.  They can’t let go of Trump either.

And the public gets more frustrated because no one seems to care about them.  I guess that this is how civil wars happen, as an old teacher told me over the phone yesterday.

Mother Nature sent Texas a reality check

Well, the lights went out and came back and went out and came back.  Welcome to mid-February 2021 in Texas.

Why in the world did this happen?  I thought that we had all that oil in West Texas!  What are we doing using wind turbines to keep us warm?  Who came up with that crazy idea?  Turbines?

I think that all of us got a lesson this time about relying on wind and solar options.  They always look better on paper and graphs than they really are.  In other words, they are not as reliable as coal, oil, or nuclear power during extreme weather conditions.

The good news is that the public is up in arms.  Governor Abbott has put the issue at the top of the Legislature’s agenda:

“The Electric Reliability Council of Texas has been anything but reliable over the past 48 hours,” said Abbott on Tuesday.  “Far too many Texans are without power and heat for their homes as our state faces freezing temperatures and severe winter weather.  This is unacceptable.  Reviewing the preparations and decisions by ERCOT is an emergency item so we can get a full picture of what caused this problem and find long-term solutions.  I thank my partners in the House and Senate for acting quickly on this challenge, and I will work with them to enhance Texas’ electric grid and ensure that our state never experiences power outages like this again.”

Let’s hope there is a frank and thoughtful discussion.  I hope someone will ask a simple question: why are we using turbines when there are more reliable options to do the job?

Mother Nature decided to teach us a lesson, and I hope we learn it before the next storm comes around!

What's next for Trump Derangement Syndrome?

It did not take long for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a few others to express their disappointment with the second acquittal.  After all, the lady from San Francisco is now 0 for 2 in the business of impeaching and removing a president.  Nancy is in the "record books" for all the wrong reasons.

They are even floating the 14th Amendment option.  Some are even talking about a 9/11 type commission to investigate the terrible events of January 6th.  Good luck with both of those, especially the latter and asking Speaker Pelosi under oath when she knew that the Capitol was a target.

So what do they do now?  My guess is that most sane people would like to see this nonsense stop and the country move on.

Can the Democrats afford to move on?  The answer is "no," because they are so invested in hate and self-righteousness that they can't let go, as Professor Victor Davis Hanson pointed out

Hating Donald Trump in the hater’s eyes makes one moral. But in the real world, such pathological fixations usually result in abject immorality and moral decline, as the hater becomes far worse than what he hates.

The bad news is that you can't just let go of this type of hatred.  So get ready for lots of "Trump this and Trump that".   CNN and MSNBC will soon be posting reporters at Mira Lago shouting questions at the former President every time he steps out to play golf.  They can't let go of Trump, especially as more people turn off the TV because Biden is boring.

The good news is that higher gasoline prices and chaos in the border will force the Democrats to turn the page on Trump Derangement Syndrome.   By the end of 2021, impeachment will be a distant memory and more and more voters will remember the good old days when gas was cheaper and the border secure.

Good news for Yankees' spring training games

Move to Palm Beach taxpayer and bring your business, too.   Yes, they are heading south and probably never going back, according to this story in the New York Post:

While the majority of those flocking to the area from the New York area are undoubtedly privileged, bargain airfares and hotel stays are allowing a broader spectrum of visitors.

“The irony is, living in Florida is actually one-third less expensive than living in New York -- and younger people are realizing that,’’ said 70-year-old Gene Pressman, a former Manhattanite whose family founded Barney’s and who now lives in Palm Beach.

“Palm Beach used to be full of uptown [Manhattan] people but now the downtown people are here,’’ added Pressman’s wife, Christine, 48.

And after New York’s lockdown, Palm Beach’s social scene -- and its lack of social distancing at some spots -- can cause culture shock for new arrivals.

“People say it’s like the Wild West here,’’ said Todd Herbst, owner of the popular new Palm Beach restaurant Elisabetta’s. “They are surprised at how open everything is here. It’s as if COVID doesn’t exist, but we require all staff to wear masks and we don’t allow parties over 10 people.”

Welcome to Florida and enjoy the difference.

My biggest question is this:  Will they go back when things change in New York?  Will they miss the local restaurant?

It's too early to tell, but my guess is that this is going to be permanent because of the cost of living, taxes, and safety.  The biggest complaint I hear about New York is lawlessness and unsafe streets.  People will stay away if the local government can not clean up the streets and put the criminals in jail.

One quick benefit of this migration is that New Yorkers will get to see their Yankees and Mets in spring training games.  One potential problem is that these New Yorkers bring their politics south and elect Democrats -- the same people that destroyed their city.

Let's hope that they keep their loyalty to the Yankees but not to the politicians who messed up their state.

Four-dollar gasoline coming to a station near you?

The Biden administration may soon have another headache to go along with that crisis on the border.  We’re talking about $4-a-gallon gasoline.  This is from Trending Politics:

After four years of stable gas prices under President Donald J. Trump, Americans may have to get used to some pain at the pump.

Former Vice President Joe Biden hasn’t even been in the White House for a month and gas prices are already up whopping 18 percent with at least one analyst predicting that they could hit $4 per gallon in the near future.

Talk about a midterm election nightmare!  A mess on the border and $4-a-gallon gasoline.

In both instances, the driving factor is President Biden’s executive orders.  We have seen a president so eager to delete everything Trump that he canceled the Keystone XL pipeline and raised all kinds of fears about Green New Deal policies.  Furthermore, the administration is talking more and more about regulatory burdens on domestic energy-producers in the fossil fuel industry.

The problem with gasoline prices is that you pay them every time you go to the station.  It hits a lot of people between the eyes, especially lower-income groups who need gasoline to work.

It’s insane and totally unnecessary.  On energy and the border, President Trump left a house in order.  It did not take long for President Biden to mess it up.

Tents in South Texas

Down in South Texas, we are seeing a surge in illegal immigrants, according to new information reported in the New York Post:

The Biden administration is facing fresh spikes of over 100 percent in illegal border crossings from this time last year and has opened another tent city to detain illegal immigrants in Texas, US Customs and Border Protection has announced.

The Border Patrol revealed in a report released Wednesday that the number of migrants apprehended at the border in the month of January reached nearly 78,000, up from 36,679 in January 2020.

Single adult Mexican citizens accounted for more than 37,000 CBP encounters, a 119 percent increase from this time last year, according to the agency.

Single adult males?  I thought that it was about unifying families and their children.

The Biden administration is carrying out a policy that was not fully disclosed during the campaign.  Does anyone remember Biden saying that he'd building tents to bring people into the country?

Eventually, and sooner rather than later, this is going to explode into a mess that Biden will not be able to control.  Unfortunately, the people in Central America were encouraged to come north and they came north.

A couple of years ago, I expected the Colin Kaepernick story to fade away.  I had no idea that team owners would give it any credibility.  After all, Collin became a "social justice" warrior when he got benched for throwing interceptions.

Sadly, the NFL owners turned out to be a bunch of "sissies" who got whipped by the "wokes”.   It made me sick.

Well, maybe I'm not alone.  The Super Bowl had the lowest TV audience since 2007.   Wonder why?  I can't tell you how many of my friends have said goodbye to the NFL, and specially the NBA.   I hope that the commissioner of Major League Baseball is paying attention.

Now, Mark Cuban confirmed that the Dallas Mavericks will not play the national anthem.   Why?   Mark only knows because there was no movement in North Texas to make this happen.  I don't recall any fan calling a sports talk show saying that they'd buy a ticket if they stopped playing the anthem.

To be fair, Mark Cuban has been a generous supporter of police families and charities.  He is not a bad person.

Why would a man like Cuban who owes everything to the US turn like this on his country?   I don't know but it makes me wonder if Mark knows his fans.

P.S.  You can listen to my show (Canto Talk).
