Some day we will look at the spring of 2020 and the coronavirus. We will likely remember what happened to the lady governor of Michigan.
Not long ago, Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her party’s reply to President Trump’s State of the Union Address. She was introduced as a Midwest centrist. A couple of weeks ago, she was the media’s flavor of the week as VP’s running mate.
Well, something happened on the way to nomination. The lady from Michigan forgot that she had a state to run and things are not going well at the moment.
Embattled Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer picked an odd time to attack the state’s DeVos family, a founder of the giant Amway health, beauty, and home care firm that has been loading up the state with the personal protective equipment sought in the coronavirus crisis.
Whitmer, facing a recall movement after extending the state’s virus lockdown, lashed out at the “DeVos family” Monday, claiming that they are behind an upcoming protest from conservatives in the state.
Then today, after the family rejected the attack, she tried to play nice and issued a statement praising their firm, founded by Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos. Dick DeVos, Rich’s son, whose wife is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, is Amway’s former president and is now on the board.
On Monday, at a press conference to give an update on the virus, she slapped at the planned Wednesday protest in Lansing by the Michigan Conservative Coalition, claiming it was funded by the DeVos-backed Michigan Freedom Fund.
We understand that the governor took it back a bit and decided to make peace with one of her state’s biggest employers and taxpayers.
Well, what can we say about this?
First, I think that we are seeing a person who can’t handle the pressures of a crisis. Did she run anything before becoming governor or did she just benefit from the blue wave of 2018?
Second, and more consequential, I think that she took her eye off the ball and started running for vice-president. She started to pick fights with President Trump over this or that just to endear herself to the Democrat base.
My guess is that Governor Whitmer has played herself off of VP Biden’s list and should listen to her angry constituents hoping to recall her.
