2020 has been rough on Cooperstown

Can you remember such a bad year for Baseball's Hall of Fame?  I can't remember another year when so many of the greats passed away.

We lost Phil Niekro over the weekend:
Niekro was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1997. The iconic knuckleballer collected 318 wins over a 24-year career that included stints with the Braves (1964-83 and 1987), Yankees ('84-'85), Tribe ('86-'87) and Blue Jays ('87). He was a five-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove Award winner who finished within the top six in National League Cy Young Award balloting five times from '69-'82.
His best years were with the Braves but he did not get to pitch for the teams that dominated the National League in the 1990's.

Niekro was famous for that knuckle ball, or the pitch that every kid wants to throw but can't.  I tried and tried but my "knucle balls" never got to home plate.  Niekro would have probably told me that I wan't holding the ball correctly.

Great pitcher who threw a no-hitter but never won the Cy Young Award. Neither did Nolan Ryan and he had a pretty good career.

2020 was horrible.  We lost Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford, Joe Morgan and now  Niekro.  (By the way, Gibson, Brock and Kaline started game 7 of the 1968 World Series).

All I can say is that St. Peter has a heck of a rotation for the upcoming season.   Furthermore, having Brock lead off and Kaline hitting third is one team that I'm betting on!

No need to 'defund the police' in Portland

My guess is that serving as a police officer in Portland must have been a dream job at one time.  After all, what could go wrong in quiet Portland?  Where else could you find a beautiful city like Portland?   It had everything until it became another crazy blue city run by even crazier Democrats.

So the police are leaving!  Yes, the "men in blue" want out, according to this story in Daily Wire:

Nine officers have resigned from the Portland Police Department since November, and another 14 have filed papers to leave by the end of January. Seven others have made initial filings preparing to retire. About 25 officers are looking to transfer to other police departments, Frome, who heads the Human Resources Department, said based off requests he has received for officers’ personnel files.

The departures come after a summer of unrest pummeled the city. Nightly protests and riots took place for over 100 days straight in Portland following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

What makes matters worse in Portland is that the local government has gone AWOL on protecting citizens or supporting its police force.

So what happens when you stab the police in the back?  They leave and serve somewhere else. Watch for a lot of taxpayers and job creators to follow the police right out of Portland.

Professor Beto will talk about winning elections?

Want to do something on Zoom next year?  How about taking a course from Beto?

According to news reports, the former Congressman is now Professor O'Rourke at the LBJ School at The University of Texas:

O'Rourke will teach a seminar about the struggle for voting rights in Texas at the LBJ School for Public Affairs at the University of Texas starting in January, O'Rourke and school officials told the American-Statesman.

The class, titled Texas Democracy and the Fight for Representation, will examine democracy in action, Texas legislative policy and executive power, and the history of voter rights and voter participation in the state — while also unpacking the running of a political campaign in Texas.

O'Rourke said he wants to examine the tension in Texas, where a state that produced Lyndon Baines Johnson, signer of the 1965 federal Voting Rights Act, also remains in 2020, despite historic record turnout, "one of most restrictive states in terms of voter participation."

What a bunch of crap about Texas.  Will anyone remind Beto that he spent millions of dollars, then got thousands to vote but still lost?  What about 2020, when Democrats once again spent millions but lost?

No one is stopping anyone from voting in Texas.  The issue is not restrictions, but rather the message, a message that Texas did not buy in 2020.

Wonder if Professor O'Rourke will roller-skate to class to cheers from sycophants?

Wonder if any student will ask Professor O'Rourke to comment on the Dallas Morning News editorial describing the party's failure in 2020?  It was a disaster for Democrats in 2020 around here, and much of it has to be blamed on Beto moving the party to the crazy left.

Senator Cruz is right about the Iran and Paris deals

My new AT post:

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/12/senator_cruz_is_right_about_the_iran_and_paris_deals.html

———————

Back in 2017, President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Change Accord and then the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Shortly after the Paris decision, a friend from South America called me to express his dissatisfaction.  He basically said something like why is the U.S. pulling out of an international deal?

I responded by saying that the Paris accords made no sense for two reasons:

First, it did not have enforcement mechanisms.  I asked him:  Would you lease a property if you can't enforce the lease in the courts?

Second, and more important, I told him that the Paris deal was not binding on the U.S. because it was not a treaty.  Then I proceeded to talk about the treaty clause in the Constitution.  As I told him, Obama never really had the authority to commit the U.S. into that agreement.  It was a piece of paper that would have been challenged all the way to the Supreme Court by one or a group of states.

This is why I love what Senator Cruz is proposing to stop a President Biden to put us back in the Paris deal.   He wants President Trump to present both agreements to the Senate for treaty consideration:

On Monday, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) taking heed of Joe Biden’s public pronouncements indicating he would rejoin the Paris Agreement and rejoin the Iran nuclear deal, sent a letter to President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that would head Biden off at the pass, asking Trump to submit the deals as treaties, thus forcing any such actions by Biden to be submitted to the Senate for approval.

Senator Cruz's idea makes sense in two ways:

1) He is correct on the Constitution.  We have a treaty clause for a reason.  The Founders did not want presidents running around the world signing deals and involving the nation in potential legal problems for states or companies.

2) It makes sense politically.  Force the Democrats to defend the agreements on the Senate floor.  My guess is that most Democrats want no part of these votes.  They just want the issue but not the up and down vote.

We call on President Trump to take Senator Cruz's advice and go the treaty route.  It will be the end of these two bad deals.

Thursday’s video: Merry Christmas & Feliz Navidad

President Trump delivered the biggest Christmas gift of all

We think of Christmas as a time of gifts and giving.   I want to say thanks to President Trump for delivering the biggest gift of 2020 or the vaccine that every "expert" said would never happen so quickly.

I agree with Michael Goodwin:

It is now an established fact that the numerous naysayers who predicted President Trump could never deliver a vaccine this year were wrong. Thankfully, he did what they insisted couldn’t be done.

But the no-can-do crowd now has a second puerile act: a miserly and grudging recognition of the miracle Trump and his team performed. Those expressing pinched gratitude for a fact they can’t deny include the man who has reason to be the most thankful of all Americans.

“I think that the administration deserves some credit getting this off the ground with Operation Warp Speed,” Joe Biden said as he got his Trump vaccine shot.

“Some credit?” Then who deserves the rest of the credit?

Notice, too, that Biden can’t bring himself to say “President Trump.” It’s just the “administration” that deserves “some credit.”

It's too bad but don't expect many on the other side to say "thank you" to President Trump.

In the meantime, just remember to say thanks to President Trump when you are passing the wine around the table.

He did it and that's a big deal!

Wednesday’s video: Trump is right about the bill

What Melania should tell Jill

Can someone get First Lady Melania Trump a copy of "Grover Cleveland: A Style in Courage" by Allan Nevins"?.

According to Gromer Jeffers, Jr.,who writes about Texas politics, this is what First Lady Francis Cleveland said to a staffer on the way out:

“I want you to take good care of all the furniture and ornaments in the house, for I want to find everything just as it is now, when we come back again. We are coming back four years from today.”

As you may remember, President Cleveland won in 1884, lost in 1888 and came back in 1892. As my history professor used to say, he was # 22 and # 24!

Time will tell whether President Trump is # 45 and # 47 or maybe # 48 if someone replaces # 46.

My guess is that he won't run, as tempting as it may be.  I think that he will support VP Mike Pence or Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida.

By 2024, President Trump will be 78 and who knows about his health or Melania's interest in going through all of this over again?  I think that Mrs. Trump has been treated very poorly by a media who thought that Michelle Obama should be be First Lady forever.

So who knows about 2024?  I wouldn't be surprised if Melania tells Jill to keep the "Make America great" poster around just in case her husband walks down another escalator.

Tuesday’s video: Another horrible spending bill

Still not affordable after all these years

We were too busy with COVID and the presidential election to remember an important date, the 10th anniversary of the Affordable Health Care Act.

How is the ten-year old law doing?   Some polls show that many support its goals but overall it is not really working, as Chuck Donovan wrote:

The promise of the ACA was better coverage at lower cost. Everyone remembers President Barack Obama’s sober pledge that American families would enjoy $2,500 in annual savings on their premiums and be able to keep their doctors. The Heritage report shows, instead, that in just five years, from 2013 to 2018, the average monthly premium paid by an individual rose from $244 to $550 a month, a more than 125% increase.

At the same time, the mid-tier quality plan on the federal exchange saw its annual deductible rise by more than $1,000. Provider networks, in turn, typically shrank.

As the article further explains, most U.S. counties are down to 1 or 2 plans.

Ten years later, reality had the last word.  ObamaCare killed choices and prices went up.  It raised premiums and deductibles and that's the bottom line as it turns 10.

Monday’s video: Public education at a crossroads

Parents want different choices in education

Over the last few months, I've heard more and more frustration with public education.  It started a few years ago with the bathroom debate.  It has now exploded with school closings because of COVID.

No matter what, parents want choices and public education can't give it to them, as we see in this article by J.D. Tucille:

Insisting that "the push to reopen schools is rooted in sexism, racism and misogyny," the Chicago Teachers Union is fighting plans to return children to the city's public school classrooms.

Not only is the union seeking an injunction to keep kids at home, but it says "all options are going to be on the table" -- an implied threat of a strike in an already chaotic year -- if it's not happy with the school board's decision.

Amidst a multitude of such battles across the country, it's no wonder that families weary of being held hostage to other people's decisions are abandoning government schools to enroll their kids in private institutions or to teach them at home.

That shift is likely to permanently transform education in the United States in a way that lets children experience diverse approaches and viewpoints.

Yes, reality has finally caught up with public education.  In a generation, we've gone from public schools that taught you to love the flag and country to teachers' union more in tune with the left wing of the Democrat Party. To matters worse, the quality of education has declined and inner city schools are first-rate disasters with fewer kids learning to read and write.

It's sad that it took a pandemic to do it but big changes are coming to public education.

Is Biden going to really reverse Trump's border policies?

On Thursday, I had a long phone conversation with a politician in Mexico.  Forgive me for using "a source familiar with the situation" rather than give you his name. Trust me that this guy knows the situation and I cannot give you his name.

We discussed the potential change from President Trump to Biden regarding U.S.-Mexico policies. Let me summarize the conversation by saying that my friend is sure that a President Biden is going to get an earful from President Andres Lopez-Obrador about the border.  In other words, Mexico is very happy that they've shut down their southern border and President Trump has enforced the northern border.  It appears that Mexicans don't like caravans anymore than we do.

In recent days, we've read about a "caravan" heading north.  We've heard that these people are encouraged by Biden's words or the return of the Obama policies.

At the same time, we learned that Central American authorities stopped the caravan because they've been warned by Mexico to stay away. My friend assured me that President Lopez-Obrador has made it very clear that Mexico is not going to be the highway to the north anymore.

What will happen under a Biden presidency and the border? Not much. He will do a lot of talking but nothing will change because President Trump's policies worked and COVID has shut down border crossings all over the world.

Is Trump winning the fraud argument?

President Trump has argued "fraud" and the voters are apparently listening:

For the second day in a row, a new voter survey has found support for President Trump’s vow to fight on with his challenge to the election, with more believing that it was plagued with fraud.

While a Tuesday Pew Research Center survey said that it was mostly Republicans who believed that fraud occurred, the new McLaughlin & Associates poll found that all voters, by a 46%-45% margin, believed that there was fraud.
Beyond that, Rasmussen now reports that 52% of Likely U.S. Voters believe that the media hid the Hunter Biden scandal to help his father’s presidential campaign.

What happens now?   I think that Democrats should not underestimate the extent to which Americans want answers about the 2020 election vote.

Memo to Joe

The good news for Joe Biden is that he got 306 electoral votes this week.  The bad news is that the referee has not blown the whistle, i.e. the election won't be official until the U.S. Senate and Congress confirm the vote in January.

As we learned, there were Trump electors in the contested states.   Can those votes replace the Biden electors?  It's up to the state legislatures, the only people in the country who can do anything about it.  (Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 and 3)

So my message to Mr. Biden to get in the game and make the following statement:

My fellow citizens,

I know that many of you don't think that the 2020 election was on the level.  Therefore, I call on President Trump to immediately call for a special prosecutor to look into the results.  I can't govern unless the voters accept the results of a tough election.

Will he do this?   He should but he won't.  Therefore, he will walk into the presidency with two strikes.  It won't be fun for him, his family and the millions who apparently made it possible.

Well done, Aggieland

As the father of a couple of Aggies, we generally follow Texas A&M stories in our home.

This is a story that caught my eye recently:

Campus Reform reported that Texas A&M Students For Trump President Dion Okeke was notified by the university’s Student Conduct Office that he was “required” to meet with the office after he and other members put up pro-Trump signs on campus. If he did not attend the meeting, the letter he received stated, he could face student conduct "charges."

The university has now canceled the meeting and issued a statement of apology.

Happy ending.

The university apparently sent him a template letter and then walked it back.  Between the first letter and the apology, Texas A&M danced around the issue and confused everyone.

The bad news is that a harmless Pro Trump sign got someone angry.  The good news is that the administration recognized its error and apologized.

The First Amendment lives at Texas A&M!

Tuesday’s video: Abortion in the Georgia runoff?

We need more pro-life black pastors talking

As you know, they have a big political doubleheader down in Georgia. According to Trafalgar, Senator David Purdue is in a dead heat and Senator Kelly Loeffler leads by 3.  Both Democrats are below 50% in a two-way race.

We will see who wins on January 5th.  Nevertheless, the pro-life movement scored a big victory last week.  We saw 25 black ministers call out Raphael Warnock on abortion:

They argued that “the pro-abortion movement has been characterized by racism and White supremacy since its inception,” noting that Black women are five times more likely than White women to undergo such a procedure.

It's about time because abortion is indeed a real problem in the black community.

According to the article, the Warnock team is questioning the intent of the announcement.  They say that these pastors are really GOP supporters using abortion to attack him.

Frankly, I don't have any way of getting in the heads or hearts of these black pastors.  I do know that the numbers don't lie about the abortion of black babies:  36 percent of all abortions!

It reminds me of something that a black pastor told me years ago.  He wondered how much longer African Americans will matter if they keep aborting themselves. Our conversation was in the context of who will get the new congressional districts after the census.   My friend saw Hispanics reproducing and African Americans shrinking.

Again, congratulations to the pastors in Georgia for bringing up something that no one in the media asks Democrats about.

Monday’s video: The Supreme Court and Texas case

Enough about 'standing' ....what about going around legislatures?

All of this talk about "standing" may be technically true, but the Texas plus 18 case needs to be heard.  In other words, who in the world is going to comment on violation of state laws?  Where does a state go to hold another state accountable for violating election laws?

No one seems to dispute that a governor went around state laws to mail out unsolicited ballots to citizens or another one unilaterally extended deadlines.  This is a violation of state law and it involved the election of U.S. president.

Please consider this from Roger Kimball:

There is, however, this to consider.

The ‘conservative’ states endeavor to make elections fair by taking steps to identify legal voters and ensure that the votes that are tallied are legitimate.

The ‘progressive’ states endeavor to achieve their desired electoral result by ballot harvesting, softening voter ID rules, and generally looking the other way so long as the right (meaning the left) lever is pulled.

I am not sure how an umpire should act when one side tries to play by the rules while the other tries to subvert the rules.

What, then, is fair?

It's not about fairness.  It is about the law.

Yes, we voted by the rules here in Texas.  I voted early and in person.  My 91-year old mother requested a ballot and voted absentee.  In both cases, we observed the law.  Unfortunately, that was not the case in many states where the rules were bent to facilitate voting.

So I don't want to hear about standing.  I would like to see someone address the violations of law that gave some voters something extra and probably helped Biden.

Dr. Walter Williams: How to stay out of poverty

We remember Professor Walter Williams who passed away last week.  He was born in Philadelphia in 1936 and earned a bachelor's degree in economics from California State University (1965), a master's degree (1967) and doctorate (1972) in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.   In 1980, he joined the faculty of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and became the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics.

Williams sent a message to young people on how to stay out of poverty:

"Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science.First, graduate from high school.
Second, get married before you have children, and stay married.
Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage.
And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior."
Makes a lot of sense!    Dr. Williams's suggestions are a part of his life story.

Looking ahead to 2022

Don't look now, but we're going to start talking about 2022 pretty soon.  It looks as though the GOP will have a good chance of picking up the House and hold on to the U.S. Senate.  This is from David M. Drucker:

Senate Republicans' biggest advantage heading into 2022 is the rightward swing of Florida, where GOP Sen. Marco Rubio had been expected to face a tough challenge.  Trump won Florida in 2016 and 2018, while Republican Sen. Rick Scott defeated an incumbent Democrat there in 2018.  And this year, Republicans nabbed a pair of House seats.

But the Democrats have challenges, too. First and foremost: President-elect [sic] Joe Biden.  Historically, the party that holds the White House loses seats in a president's first midterm election.  And, even in 2016 and 2018 and 2020, when Republicans were forced to navigate the twin political challenges of Trump and a perilous Senate map, they defended the majority even as many GOP candidates were significantly outraised by their Democratic opponents.

Here we go talking about money again.  It's obvious that the Democrats got little money from the investment.  Lots of money but few competitive district or state victories.

The GOP in Florida, and to a lesser extent in Texas, sure found a formula to win Hispanics.  First, you support the police.  Second, you support immigration but reject illegal immigration.  Third, you wave the flag, because Hispanics understand what it means a lot more than people born and raised here.

We may have lost President Trump, but even if we have, we have a lot to look forward to.
