California and the 2-state solution

March 2006: Secretary Caspar Weinberger and Lyn Nofziger passed away

President Reagan surrounded himself with wonderful and competent people.

Within 24 hours, we lost two of Reagan's greatest allies back in March 2006:

1) Lyn Nofziger, campaign adviser and friend;  and,

2) Secretary Caspar Weinberger, one of the finest public servants in recent memory.

Nofziger and the president go back to California.  Weinberger was the loyal and able Secretary of Defense during the tumultuous Reagan years.

Great men, great public servants!

Winfrey vs Trump: Do you think that we have too many polls?

The latest poll is about Oprah Winfrey running for president.    This is the result:
Most voters do not think Oprah Winfrey should run for president in 2020, a new survey shows. But the media mogul would hold a narrow lead over President Donald Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head 2020 matchup.
Yes, we have too many polls!

The Matt Lauer story gets better with age......

The Matt Lauer story is like wine.....it gets better with age!    This is the latest from Ann Curry:
Ann Curry said in her first TV interview since leaving NBC in 2015 that she would have been surprised if anyone at the "Today" show didn't know about her former co-host Matt Lauer's pervy behavior with women, adding that there was a culture of sexual harassment at the peacock network.
"I can tell you that I am not surprised by the allegations," Curry told the "CBS This Morning" hosts on Wednesday morning regarding the harassment and assault claims against Lauer.
Curry was then pressured to talk about whether others at NBC and "Today" knew about Lauer's alleged behavior at the time.
"I think it would be surprising if someone said they didn't see that," an uncomfortable Curry said. She added, "I would be surprised if many women did not understand that there was a climate of verbal harassment that existed."
Wonder how many stories they did about Bill O'Reilly or Donald Trump?

Did that new poll about blacks and Trump drive Durbin over the edge?

The latest black support numbers for President Trump are interesting but not surprising:
Two new polls show President Donald Trump’s rising support among black voters, highlighting his political gains from pushing employers to hire Americans instead of lower-wage migrants.
The growing support from blacks – despite furious Democratic claims of racism – could become a shocking political validation in November when Trump will face millions of upper-income Democratic voters who are angry at his “Buy American, Hire American” policies.
Among black men, Trump’s “2017 average approval rating significantly exceeds his 2016 vote share,” admitted a January 11 article in the Atlantic by author Ronald Brownstein.  “[Twenty-three] percent of black men approved of Trump’s performance versus 11 percent of black women,” said the article.
That score averages out to 17 percent, or twice the 8 percent score he was given in the 2016 exit polls.
In November 2016, Trump got 13 percent support among black men and 4 percent support among black women, according to the exit polls.  That very low support was critical to his victory in the Democrats’ now[] demolished “Blue Wall” states.
The poll was “a cumulative analysis of 605,172 interviews SurveyMonkey conducted with Americans in 2017,” according to the Atlantic.
What will this mean in 2018?  Probably not a lot in black-majority districts that the GOP will not even fight for.  However, it may tip a close Senate election in Missouri, Indiana, or Ohio.
Looking forward to 2020, these numbers may not hold, but it is enough to drive an identity politics specialist like Senator Durbin to play the race card.
