Big lawsuit settlement in Brazil

Over the last couple of years, Brazil has been inundated with one corruption scandal after another. The government responded with “Operation Carwash,” sort of like our “drain the swamp.”
We learned this week that Petrobras, the state oil monopoly, settled a huge one with U.S. investors:
PetrĂ³leo Brasileiro, Brazil’s state-controlled oil company, said on Wednesday that it had agreed to pay $2.95 billion to settle a shareholder lawsuit in the United States over a corruption scandal that has ensnared dozens of politicians and corporate executives, including two former Brazilian presidents.
Prosecutors, in a long-running investigation known as Operation Carwash, have claimed that a small number of top officials at the company, known as Petrobras, conspired with a group of other companies to overcharge Petrobras for construction and service work, receiving bribes in return.
The ensuing scandal and vast investigation has implicated dozens of high-level figures like former [p]resident Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva and his successor, Dilma Rousseff.  Corruption allegations have also dogged the current president, Michel Temer, and several of his close allies.
Petrobras officials believe [that] nearly $3 billion in bribes [was] paid as part of the scheme, which allegedly included gifts of Rolex watches, $3,000 bottles of wine, yachts, helicopters[,] and prostitutes.
The company said on Monday that it was a victim of the bribery scheme and had already recovered 1.475 billion Brazilian rea[l]s, or about $449 million, in restitution.  Petrobras said it would “continue to pursue all available legal remedies from culpable companies and individuals.”
This is good news for a couple of reasons:
1) It protects foreign investors, the necessary ingredient for future growth.  Like any other growing economy, Brazil needs to attract money, and this settlement is a sign of respect toward these and future investors.
2) It shows that the anti-corruption campaign is serious.  As my friend in Brazil said, it looks as if we are washing one corrupt car at a time.  It’s good to see Brazil get serious about corruption.
Cheers for Brazil.  I hope other Latin American countries learn from this experience.

Brian Ross really out

We learned that Brian Ross will be out of sight for a while.    According to news reports, Brian will be reassigned to other areas.    In other words, he won't be on the air anytime soon.

It's sad to see a successful career end this way.   At the same time, ABC News is sending a clear message:   If you want to destroy Trump then run for office or get out of the newsroom.

2006: Remember when Stephen F. Hayes reported on the Saddam--terrorists connection

We are familiar with Stephen F. Hayes of The Weekly Standard and his contributions to Fox News.

Back in January 2006, Hayes published a summary based on some new information:
"THE FORMER IRAQI REGIME OF Saddam Hussein trained thousands of radical Islamic terrorists from the region at camps in Iraq over the four years immediately preceding the U.S. invasion, according to documents and photographs recovered by the U.S. military in postwar Iraq.

The existence and character of these documents has been confirmed to THE WEEKLY STANDARD by eleven U.S. government officials.
The secret training took place primarily at three camps--in Samarra, Ramadi, and Salman Pak--and was directed by elite Iraqi military units. Interviews by U.S. government interrogators with Iraqi regime officials and military leaders corroborate the documentary evidence."
I was familiar with the training camps at Salman Park but had not heard of Samarra and Ramadi.   There was also evidence that Iraq was paying money to the families of terrorists blowing up Israelis at restaurants and shops.

Hussein was a terrorist running a rogue state.

Time will show that President Clinton and VP Gore were right about Iraq. It's a shame that liberals are so angry at the 2000 election that they  chose to ignore what their own leaders used to say.

Oops: Ontario and the minimum wage

We've had our own debate about the minimum wage.    My feeling is that it should be a market issue or driven by market not political forces.     In other words, keep politics out of it!

Enter Ontario:
Employees at nearly a dozen Tim Hortons outlets across Ontario tell CBC News they are facing the loss of paid breaks, benefits, and perks by franchise owners citing Ontario's minimum wage increase.
Hello reality!    You can't increase wages without looking at market forces.
