Congratulations to Michael Ramirez of IBD!

Gov. Romney was right about the empty churches of Europe

The Romney speech is getting pretty good reviews. Time will tell whether it will be enough to get him nominated or elected.

Yet, Gov. Romney said something that we should think about this weekend as we visit our places of worship:

""I'm not sure that we fully appreciate the profound implications of our tradition of religious liberty.

I have visited many of the magnificent cathedrals in Europe.

They are so inspired ... so grand ... so empty.

Raised up over generations, long ago, so many of the cathedrals now stand as the postcard backdrop to societies just too busy or too 'enlightened' to venture inside and kneel in prayer."

We have written about this before. Secularism is running high in Europe and its consequences are all over, such as pathetic birth rates.

George Wiegel wrote:

"To put the matter directly: Europe, and especially western Europe, is in the midst of a crisis of civilizational morale....the most dramatic manifestation of Europe's crisis of civilizational morale is the brute fact that Europe is depopulating itself.

Germany will lose the equivalent of the population of the former East Germany; and Spain's population will decline by almost one-quarter.

Europe is depopulating itself at a rate unseen since the Black Death of the fourteenth century." (The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God by George Weigel)

Beyond our politics, Gov. Romney's message is more than "Faith in America".

It should have been titled "Faith in the West".

I hope that our European friends listened because they need faith more than anyone else in the West!

Europe has many problems, such as an overvalued euro and a welfare state that can't be financed any longer.

Yet, the root problem are the empty cathedrals.

Europe will never rise again until it fills the cathedrals and rediscovers its Judeo-Christian heritage.

2009: Mr Trump made the right call

Let's hope that this is my last post on Miss USA.

At the same time, let's hope that future judges do not ask stupid questions! Let's hope that they do not behave like first class fools because they don't like a young woman's answer.

Miss California said this:

""On April 19 on that stage I exercised my freedom of speech, and I was punished for doing so," said Prejean, who described Hilton's question as "politically charged" with a "hidden personal agenda."

"This should not happen in America.""

That's right. It should not happen here.

Carrie Prejean is a lovely young woman. She will be a wonderful Miss California.

She is also a young woman with strong values. She tells you where she stands. She doesn't do spin and that's really nice these days.

Thank you Mr Trump! Thank you for making the right call.

2008: Did you ever try to cash a $360 billion check?

Here is the good news: A man tried to pass a $360 billion check and did not get away with it!

Here is the bad news:  He has the right to vote! Yes, this man will get to cast a vote in November.

Here is the story:

"A man has been accused of attempting to pass a $360 billion check, which he claims was given to him by his girlfriend’s mother to start a record business, Fort Worth police said."

Did your future mother in law ever give you a check to start a business? A check in the billions of dollars?

Can you imagine the teller's face? Would this be the biggest hold ever put on a deposit?

2010: Did your biology teacher look like this?

My biology teacher had a French name (maybe he was from Quebec) and a wonderful sense of humor.

However, he did not look like Tiffany Shepherd down in Florida.

Apparently, Miss Shepherd had a "second job" showing off her wonderful figure to a bunch of guys going fishing.

So the young woman got fired! The school district claimed that she had an attendance problem. Who knows?

Let me support the district on this one. We need a little more common sense from our teachers.

CNN was better when it was boring

A couple of years ago, you could have described the three cable news channels this way. FOX was dynamic, MSNBC was unwatchable and CNN was boring.   
Well, CNN is now worse than boring. They are just plain silly and self absorbed, as Roger Kimball wrote:   

A couple of weeks ago in this space, I speculated that CNN, the Crackpot News Network, had reached the terminal stage of malevolent implausibility. 

“[I]t would be a good thing,” I wrote, “were CNN humiliated and sued out of existence. It performs no journalistic function, merely a destructively partisan one.”

As usual, I was too kind. CNN will not have to be sued out of existence, as Gawker Media, another disgusting purveyor of malicious gossip and fake news, was a year or so back. 

No, CNN seems to be performing a species of hara-kiri or seppuku in public.    

 

Yes, they are self-destructing indeed, no matter how much they try to put on a happy face.     

Jeff Zucker, President of CNN, is now complaining that President Trump is trying to intimidate his network. Really Jeff? Are you that soft? What if President Trump had said that CNN is trying to intimidate him? Wouldn’t CNN mock that?     

On a more serious note, “the bean counters” may soon be asking Mr. Zucker for a meeting to discuss ratings. CNN continues to be #3 and way behind #2. In fact, CNN Can’t Crack Top 10 In Cable News Ratings!

All of this begs a question: What if CNN had responded to Mr. Trump’s wrestling video with their own wrestling video? What if they had responded with humor rather than this self-righteous crap that President Trump is threatening journalism?
