Foreign policy mess # 1: Israel and US not on the same page about Iran

Do you recall a week like this in the long and important relationship between the US and Israel?

Before we go any further, let's establish that the US and Israel have a unique relationship.  The US was one of the first countries to recognize the Jewish state in 1948.  The US has been committed to the defense of Israel from Pres Truman in 1948 to the present.

Nevertheless, it does not look like the US and Israel are on the same page when it comes to Iran.

First, PM Netanyahu comes to town and Pres BO has to remind everyone that he's got Israel's back.   Really?  When was the last time that you remember a US president of either party screaming saying that he's got Israel's back?

Second, we have a "leak" today that speaks volumes about Pres BO is concerned about his reelection and not much else:

"The US offered to give Israel advanced weaponry -- including bunker-busting bombs and refueling planes -- in exchange for Israel's agreement not to attack Iranian nuclear sites, Israeli newspaper Maariv reported Thursday.

President Obama reportedly made the offer during Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week.

Under the proposed deal, Israel would not attack Iran until 2013, after US elections in November this year. The newspaper cited unnamed Western diplomatic and intelligence sources.   " (NYPost)

Again, this is a leak and sometimes leaks are not true or trial balloons.

Nevertheless, let's assume that it is true.  Let's accept the idea that the Obama administration tried to "bribe" Israel with some big weapons so that they don't attack before the votes are counted in the US.

First, it is utterly irresponsible for a president to make a decision like based on his reelection.

Second, Israel has a different time table than we do.  Israel has an urgency rooted on its geographic proximity to Iran, the hostility of the mad men running that country and the decline in the neighborhood, i.e. Egypt, Libya and Syria.

Again, I have never seen Israel and the US so far apart on such an important related to the survival of the Jewish state.
