Chinese active in Cuba

Image result for china and cuba images

Guess who is hanging around with Raul Castro these days? The answer is China, as we see in this report from Pan Am Post:
Chen Xi, China’s Ambassador to Havana, signed agreements with Cuban Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmiera to expand economic relations between the two countries.
China pledged to make a US $1 million donation to help with Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.
Additionally, China will provide more than US $12 million in supplies, including generators, water pumps, purifiers, folding beds and other resources.
The agreement granted China a credit line for a project to remodel and modernize the island’s electric grid and solar power infrastructure, according to the state-run publication Cuban News Agency.
Though China surpassed Venezuela in terms of trade with Cuba last year — with total of US $361 million — the agreement means that China has officially become the island’s largest trading partner.
Chinese-made buses, trucks and cars already frequent Cuban roads.
So what is China looking for?
Selling trucks and cars to Cuba? Where are the consumers?
Buses? It may be that Cuba could use some new buses but that’s not a very big sale either.
As Mexico, Canada, European countries, Brazil, and so many others have learned, doing business with Cuba is rather difficult because there is no market to speak of. This is why so much of the foreign investment is about building hotels.
China has to know that doing business with Castro’s Cuba is an automatic trip to “a loan rescheduling” meeting.
Who hasn’t been forced to restructure their loans to Cuba? A few months ago, the Paris Club agreed to waive $8.5 billion of Cuba’s outstanding $11.1 billion debt!
It works like this:  Cuba buys on credit and then can’t pay off the loan.
So China must have a different motive. How about national security or military? How about Chinese warships or submarines visiting Cuba in the future? Military outpost for intelligence or Chinese jets?
Maybe President Trump should talk about Cuba when he meets with China soon.

The trouble with Mueller

Related image
We’ve been hearing a ton of predictions about Monday, the day that Mr. Mueller is supposed to announce some indictments.
No matter what, Mr. Mueller’s work is under intense pressure, as we saw when the Wall Street Journal called for his resignation, along withGuy Benson’s interesting analysis
The Washington Post revealed Tuesday that the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee jointly paid for that infamous “dossier” full of Russian disinformation against Donald Trump.
They filtered the payments through a U.S. law firm (Perkins Coie), which hired the opposition-research hit men at Fusion GPS.
Fusion in turn tapped a former British spook, Christopher Steele, to compile the allegations, which are based largely on anonymous, Kremlin-connected sources.
Strip out the middlemen, and it appears that Democrats paid for Russians to compile wild allegations about a U.S. presidential candidate. Did someone say “collusion”?
This news is all the more explosive because the DNC and Clinton campaign hid their role, even amid the media furor after BuzzFeed published the Steele dossier in January.
Reporters are now saying that Clinton campaign officials lied to them about their role in the dossier.
Current DNC Chair Tom Perez and former Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz deny knowing about the dossier arrangement, but someone must have known.
Perhaps this explains why Congressional Democrats have been keen to protect Fusion from answering dossier questions — disrupting hearings, protesting subpoenas and deriding Republican investigators.
And it’s only going to get more confusing as more information comes out next week and after.
So it’s time for Mueller to do the honorable thing and resign. How can Mr. Mueller, or anyone else who has worked in the deep state, honestly look at all of this without bumping into a conflict of interest along the way?
As the expression goes:  when all else fails, read the instructions! In this case, “the instructions” are in the U.S. Constitution that gives the Congress oversight responsibilities.
It is the Congress, not Mr. Mueller, that should be conducting this investigation. The U.S. Congress has its flaws, from grandstanding to partisanship, but it is the best place to conduct these hearings and to ask the questions that need answers.

Who knew that the CIA had hired a bunch of cicadas?

Image result for cuban cicada images

During our early days in the U.S., my father, my uncle, and a few Cuban friends were having a nice laugh about the allegations that they were working for the CIA.  It was common back then for the Castro regime, and some of their friends among the international left, to brand Cuban exiles as CIA operatives, agents, or whatever else denoted that we had worked for them.  We were allegedly on the CIA’s payroll!
It led one of my dad’s friends to say: “I never got my CIA stipend.  Did any of you?”  I remember a lot of laughter after that!
The latest explanation about the “sonic attack” is more bizarre than the story itself.  It’s hard to believe that the Cuban government has come to this.  This is from a Fox News report:
Could the mysterious “sonic attacks” allegedly waged against U.S. Embassy employees in Cuba really just be the sounds of very loud crickets and cicadas?
That’s what Cuban officials seemed to suggest Thursday in a half-hour prime-time television special titled “Alleged Sonic Attacks.”

The special broadcast was Cuban officials’ most detailed defense to date against U.S. accusations that American diplomats in Havana were subjected to mysterious sounds that left them with a variety of ailments — including headaches, hearing problems and concussions.
With the report, Cuban officials sought to undermine the Trump administration’s assertion that 24 U.S. officials or their relatives had been subjected to deliberate attacks by a still-undetermined culprit.
Many U.S. officials reported being subjected to loud, grating noises before falling ill. The U.S. has not accused Cuba of carrying out the attacks, but says that Cuba has not met its obligation to protect diplomats on its territory.
The Cuban regime is concerned about President Trump slandering their good name?  Who is going to defend the poor cicadas from the regime’s slander?
This is such an outrageous report from Havana.
First, why did the cicadas attack only U.S. diplomats?
Second, I don’t remember anyone in my family ever complaining of ‘cicada attacks” in Cuba.
My father’s family arrived in Cuba from Spain in the 1840s.  My mother’s family arrived from Asturias (Spain) in the 1920s.  My parents were born and grew up in the interior of the island, surrounded by lots of countryside.  My dad had lots of cattlemen as bank clients.  He would often take my brother and me to visit their cattle ranches when we were kids.  I saw lots of bulls and cows growing up.
I’ve heard everything, from chameleons scaring little girls to crazy frogs running into your living room to roosters gone mad and attacking dogs to mules refusing to work on Sundays to parrots using bad language to sharks attacking swimmers.  Frankly, I have never heard of cicadas ever harming anyone – nor, especially, of “cicada brigades” targeting specific diplomats.
So it must CIA-trained cicadas.  What else explains what just happened in Cuba?  Who knew that the CIA had a cicada department in their building?

Super Bowl 2008: It was the biggest NY football win since Jets beat Colts!

As I said before, I did not have a dog in the SB fight

After further review, it was the biggest NY football win since the Jets beat the Colts in Super Bowl 3!

Back then, the Colts were the NFL champs and expected to kill the young Jets from the upstart AFL.

The experts favored the Colts.

New York beat Baltimore and the AFL was here to stay.  Eventually, the leagues were merged and football interest grew incredibly.

Eli Manning is not Joe Namath. They are both southern boys but Joe likes publicity a lot more than the quiet Eli.

On the field, Eli can play. He can throw a pass. He can win a Super Bowl!

I'm happy for Giants' fans. I am specially happy for Eli Manning, a nice young man who was brutally attacked by the media dogs in NY!

2008 Super Bowl: Giants win!

We remember and say congratulations again to the New York Giants!

Who would have believed this a month before the big game? The Giants started 0-2 and they were ready to throw Coach Coughlin and Eli Manning out of NY.

I guess that this is why they play all 16 games and the postseason!

Let me say a word about the Patriots. They had a great year and 18-1 is nothing to feel bad about that.

It was a great and exciting game!

2008: Palin Derangement Syndrome and a couple of idiots in LA!

(A post from October 2008)

Palin Derangement Syndrome is alive and well near LA. (Effigy of Sarah Palin hanging by a noose creates uproar in West Hollywood)

When is something funny? When is something just plain sick? You can put me down as someone who thinks that this is sick.

Also, what if they did it to Obama?

Take it down. This is a disgusting way of celebrating Halloween. Why isn't this a hate crime?

Beyond the bad taste, this is another example of PDS and the American left.

The American left hates Sarah Palin because she had a baby rather than an abortion.

In '91, Clarence Thomas had to be lynched because he did not kiss Jesse Jackson's ring to get ahead in life.

In 2008, the feminists have declared war on Sarah Palin because she is not of them!

West Virginia is a good indicator of presidential elections!

John Denver had it right: Almost heaven, West Virginia

West Virginia is a beautiful state. It also has a knack for voting for the winner of presidential elections: FDR. Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush and Trump!    It did not vote for Obama and he won in 2008 & 2012.

Not bad for little West Virginia!

On Sunday, Pres BO will speak at Notre Dame.

2008: Where are the allies in Afghanistan?

For some time, the left's favorite line is that Bush acted alone in Iraq.

Actually, he didn't.

There is a large coalition of countries in Iraq. Most of them do not actually fight.

In fact, the bulk of the fighting has been done by US and UK troops. Why? Because most of the coalition members do not have troops capable or prepared to fight a war.

What in the world is going on in Afghanistan? This is the Dems' favorite war. This is the one that we must win, according the Dems.

Who is going to call the allies and tell them to put troops on the battlefield.

So far, it is the US and the UK (sound familiar?). We should add that the Canadians are doing a great job and taking casualties.

Beyond the US, UK and Canada, everybody is sitting on the bench promoting the concept of multinational operations!

Does that make sense? It does not to the US voter, who is sick and tired of Europeans who talk a lot more than they are willing to fight.

Rick Moran has a great post today about all of this:
"If NATO won’t fight in Afghanistan, where will they fight? As Russia grows in strength and confidence under Vladmir Putin, the former satellites of the old Soviet Union who are now NATO members may start to wonder if the countries of western Europe will confront that menace if a showdown were to come.
With western interests and credibility at stake in Afghanistan and member states failing to answer the call, it is a legitimate question whether NATO would fight in the Baltic states or even in Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.'"
The West is not serious about fighting this terrible war. It's time for the allies to stand up or NATO will cease to be.

March 2008: Did Obama really oppose the Iraq War?

(A post from March 2008)

One way or another. Obama's past is under greater scrutiny. From now on, people will go back and compare what he said with what he is saying now.

Welcome to the majors Obama!

Obama's favorite reply to every question is that he opposed the war in 2002. Some of us have reminded Obama-istas that Obama was not a US Senator. In other words, he did not have access to the same intelligence that Clinton did. Better than that, he did not have to vote. Obama simply answered a question in a Chicago TV program.

It turns out that Obama's position may be a little confusing after all. I found this interview from 2006 in The New Yorker:
"I think what people might point to is our different assessments of the war in Iraq, although I’m always careful to say that I was not in the Senate, so perhaps the reason I thought it was such a bad idea was that I didn’t have the benefit of U.S. intelligence.

And, for those who did, it might have led to a different set of choices. So that might be something that sort of is obvious.

But, again, we were in different circumstances at that time: I was running for the U.S. Senate, she had to take a vote, and casting votes is always a difficult test."
What exactly did he mean? This is the kind of scrutiny that Obama has not had. My guess is that it will be a lot different from now until convention, and subsequently, the election.

April 2008: We add Rachel's Vineyard to our favorite places!

Abortion takes a human life and hurts the mother. Rachel's Vineyard is a group that works with women to heal the pain of abortion:
"Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion.

Weekend retreats offer you a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions to begin the process of restoration, renewal and healing."
It's a great website. They deserve your support!

Game 2, and the winner is baseball, the fans, and the US flag

Image result for astros vs dodgers images

Game 2 was a great game. It reminded me of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series and the tension of the last few innings that ended with Carlton Fisk’s home run. It also reminded of the back and forth of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series when the lead changed and the Rangers could not close the game.
Most of all, it was great baseball at a time when the country needed a distraction from everything else politicized these days,
You mean a sporting event without athletes sticking their political opinions in our faces? Yes, that’s exactly what I mean! Sports the way they used to be!
Over at the other stadium, the NFL continues to battle angry fans. We see that the numbers continue to go down. This is from Sporting News:
The NFL’s once-golden network TV numbers continue to drop.

NFL games averaged 15.1 million viewers through Week 7, according to Nielsen data obtained by Sporting News.
That’s down 5.1 percent from 15.87 million viewers during the same period last season and off 18.7 percent from 18.35 million viewers during the same period in 2015.
Viewership numbers are lagging for a variety of reasons, not least the ongoing protests during the national anthem that former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began in 2016.
Fans are still angry about Kaepernick’s continued unemployment as well as what’s seen as the growing politicization of the NFL.
“Not least the ongoing protests?” What?
Of course, it’s the ongoing protests and players kneeling during the national anthem. Why else would fans be angry at the NFL? The Bucs’ uniform?
Fans “angry at Kaepernick’s continued unemployment?” What?
Kaepernick couldn’t play, got benched, and then decided to do philosophy.
The moral of the story is that customers matter, specially when you look at today’s ticket prices.
Thank God that baseball is doing it the old-fashioned way, realizing that people tune in to watch the game, not have politics thrown at our faces.

Was the ‘sonic attack’ an inside job to oust Castro?

Related image
For several months, we’ve been speculating about the source of the “sonic attack” on U.S. diplomats in Cuba.
Who did it? Nobody knows the answer, but the “Mystery of sonic weapon attacks at U.S. embassy in Cuba deepens” as we read a few days ago:
The Trump administration still hasn’t identified a culprit or a device to explain the attacks, according to interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. officials, Cuban officials, and others briefed on the investigation.
Most weren’t authorized to discuss the probe and demanded anonymity.
In fact, almost nothing about what went down in Havana is clear. Investigators have tested several theories about an intentional attack: by Cuba’s government, a rogue faction of its security forces, a third country like Russia or some combination thereof.

Yet they’ve left open the possibility an advanced espionage operation went horribly awry, or that some other, less nefarious explanation is to blame.
Aside from their homes, officials said Americans were attacked in at least one hotel, a fact not previously disclosed.
An incident occurred on an upper floor of the recently renovated Hotel Capri, a 60-year-old concrete tower steps from the Malecon, Havana’s iconic, waterside promenade.
The cases vary deeply: different symptoms, different recollections of what happened.
So who did it? We don’t know for sure, but it had to be a very sophisticated organization that knew what rooms to attack.
They had to know a lot about the whereabouts of U.S. diplomats.
Also, these fancy hotels are joint ventures with the Cuban government.
Was it another country like North Korea or Russia? It could be. The old USSR had a huge intelligence base in Cuba. Russian ships now visit Cuba often.
Could it be the Cuban government trying to spy on U.S. diplomats? It could be, but that would be rather dangerous given the health consequences we’ve seen. The Cuban government would lose a lot of political support in the U.S. by engaging in those tactics.
So what happened?
Let me introduce you to my late paternal grandmother. She was born in Cuba in 1892 when the island was still a Spanish colony. She would always show everyone her birth certificate indicating that she was born in a Spanish colony, as Cuba was before the Spanish American War of 1898. She was an amazing woman who had three sons in her late 30s, rather unique for her times.
My grandmother was a huge history fan. She was our Cuban history teacher when we were growing up in the U.S. I was always so impressed how she could remember everything about pre-Castro history.
Now let’s “Remember the Maine“, the U.S. Navy ship that blew up in Havana harbor in 1898 and led to the Spanish American War.
As you may remember, Spain lost Cuba because of that conflict, and the island became independent in 1902.
My grandmother always told me that the Maine was an inside job, or sabotage by Cuban independence rebels to force a fight between the U.S. and Spain. It was a popular theory back then. (In 1976, an inquiry concluded that it was “likely” an accident.)
What would my grandmother say about “the sonic attack”? I think that she would way say that it was an inside job to oust Castro.
After all, who would know about the hotel rooms and the capabilities of Cuba’s intelligence network?
Who could pull off something like this without getting noticed by the Cuban government?
Who would want to hurt U.S. diplomats and have Castro get the blame?
Was the “sonic attack” an inside job to force the U.S. to change its policy toward Cuba? To slow down the engagement? To force U.S. tourists to stop travelling to Cuba? To make U.S. businesses think twice about exposing their executives to Cuba?
Prior to the attacks, everything was moving in the direction of more U.S. economic involvement in Cuba. After the attacks, U.S.-Cuba relations have soured, and that’s an economic blow to Castro.
Again, I don’t know. However, who else but elements inside the Cuban government could pull this off?  Maybe this is a clever inside coup?
Maybe it’s a crazy idea but does anyone have a better explanation?
“Remember the Maine“? Maybe someday we will say “Remember the embassy”!

Rachel’s big ratings have little political impact

Image result for rachel maddow cartoons
We just saw that Rachel Maddow is # 1 in cable news this week. She is reaching about 3 million people every night, according to the latest numbers:
The MSNBC host just hit a milestone for MSNBC, with her 9 P.M. hour, “The Rachel Maddow Show,” finishing the third quarter of 2017 as the No. 1 cable news show on television.
It’s the first time any MSNBC show has finished first in the Nielsen ratings for an entire quarter.
Maddow hit her highest ratings among total viewers (2.7 million) and in the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults 25-54 (606,000).
That represents an increase of 75% compared to the third quarter of 2016 (total viewers), and 65% (adults 25-54).
Well, that’s good news for Rachel Maddow’s bank account and some advertisers who don’t mind being associated with "The Anti-Trump Hour" of cable TV.
Beyond that, it has zero impact on our politics.
Maddow reaches about 3 million people every night who tune in to feed their anti-Trump fantasies and to hear every crazy conspiracy theory going around the websites.  Her viewers do not include anyone who is seriously interested in learning anything or engaging in political discourse.
I’ve encountered some of her viewers.
They call Trump a racist but cannot explain why no one called Trump a racist when he was donating money to Democrats, Jesse Jackson, or the Clinton Foundation.
They call Trump a dictator but cannot explain why the Trump police has not knocked on their door and taken them away to a political prison.
Maddow’s place is where the silly people meet. It is the political equivalent of X-rated films and not much more.
Unlike “The O’Reilly Factor,” a show that started under Clinton and ended under Trump, the Maddow show has no serious debate. O’Reilly invited top guests from both sides. They went back and forth on the matters of the day and got you to think about both sides.
Maddow does not do anything like that. She puts “red meat” on the table and then watches the left eat it like hungry wolves.
How long will Maddow’s magic last? I don’t know, but don’t be surprised if she suddenly fizzles. It’s hard to stay on top by just being outrageous and irresponsible.
Here is the bottom line: Maddow has not added a single vote to the Democrats. Everyone watching her is already committed to the anti-Trump effort. As Wesley Pruden said, Trump Derangment Syndrome can only take so far!
