July 1967: Sgt. Pepper’s was the # 1 LP in the US

Time flies and it was 50 years ago that Sgt Pepper taught the band to play.   It was released in June and made it to # 1 in July.      As I’ve posted before, it was not their best LP but it was an important recording.
The best song was “Lucy in the sky with diamonds“, a very catchy tune that should have been released as a 45 or single.    Another great song was “When I’m 64“, a song that got a lot of airplay and has become relevant to those of us growing old.
Last, but not least, “A day in the life” was probably the most consequential tune but many radio stations did not touch it because of allegations of drug use.    Overall, a good LP but the US version of “Rubber Soul” is better.
